Cascade (Master/Slave) Configuration

You can connect a second lev el of one or more Nov aView switches to "PC 1" ~ "PC 4" (SNV104) or "PC 1 " ~ "PC 8" ports (SNV108 and SNV2208) of a Master unit. Cascade configuration expands system capacity allowing you to select more computers connected to the Master or Slav e. There is only one Master, which has a SUN key board, mouse and monitor connected to its CONSOLE port directly operated by a user. Once connected, Nov aViews automatically conf igure themselv es to either Master or Slav e. SNV104,SNV108 and SNV2208 can be mixed in cascade conf iguration. [Note: Master must have equal or more PC ports than that of Slaves, i.e., if SNV104 is a Master, SNV104 can be a slave, but SNV108 or SNV2208 can not.] As shown in f igure 2.

Hot-Key Commands Hot-key commands are a short keyboard sequences to select a computer, to activate computer scan, etc. NovaView interprets key strokes f or hot-keys all the time. A hot-key sequence starts with two lef t <CTRL> keystrokes f ollowed by one or two more keystrokes. A built-in buzzer generates either a beep for the correct hot-key command OR a long beep followed by a short one to indicate an error (the bad key sequence will not be forwarded to the selected computer). ■ To select a computer by hot-key command, y ou must know which port it is connected to; it is determined by the NovaView connection. For a computer connected to a Master, its port number is represented by the PC port label (1~4 or 1~8). For a computer connected to a Slave, two digits represent its port number. The f irst digit is the port number of the Master unit (1~4 or 1~8) and the second one is the port number of the Slave (1~4 or 1~8). lef t Ctrl + lef t Ctrl + 7

Selects a computer connected to port 7 of the Master. lef t Ctrl + lef t Ctrl + 3 + 6

■ To start Auto Scan, automatically scan powered-on computers

one by one at a f ixed interv al: lef t Ctrl + lef t Ctrl + F 1 When Auto Scan detects any keyboard or mouse activ ity, it suspends the scanning and resets the count down timer until activity stops; it then resumes with the next computer in sequence. The length of the Auto Scan interv al (Scan Rate) is adjustable, see below. To abort the Auto Scan mode, press the lef t Ctrl key twice. ▓ To adjust Scan Rate which sets the duration bef ore switching to the next computer in Auto Scan: lef t Ctrl + lef t Ctrl + F3

13

The Nov aView sends one to f our beeps indicating scan interval of 3, 8, 15 and 30 seconds respectiv ely. ▓ Audio Stick An optional multimedia module can be LINKed to the back of each Nov aView f or selecting microphone and stereo speaker signals. There are two options f or Audio Stick: ON and Off. When set to 'On', audio selection f ollows computer selection. When set to 'Off', audio selection stops f ollowing computer selection. It is usef ul if y ou want to listen to a particular computer's audio signal while operating other computers. lef t Ctrl + lef t Ctrl + F5 The Nov aView generates 1 or 2 beeps corresponding to On and Off respectiv ely. ▓ User Timeout (SNV2208 only ) When both users select the same computer, both hav e the same video image. When either user starts to operate the computer by key board or mouse activity, the other user is denied for any access till the f irst user stops keyboard or mouse activ ity f or a period of time (i.e. User Timeout). Av ailable selections are 5, 10, 20 and 40 seconds with 1 to 4 beeps respectively when the following command is executed. lef t Ctrl + lef t Ctrl + F6

▓ Return to the prev iously selected computer To toggle back and f orth between the currently selected computer and the prev iously selected one. It is handy if there are two computers of great interest requiring y our attention. lef t Ctrl + lef t Ctrl + F7 Note: If you issue an incorrect hot-key command, the Nov aView sends out a warning signal with one long beep f ollowed by a short one.

Connection Before connecting a device (a computer or a NovaView) to the Master under power, you must turn off the device. The Master must have equal or more 'PC x' ports than that of the Slave, i.e., if SNV104 is a Master, SNV104 can be a Slave but not SNV108 nor SNV2208. Also, SNV2208 can be a Slave of SNV108. The PC ports can be connected to either a computer or a Slave's CONSOLE port as shown in f igure 10.

Figure 10: Slave CONSOLE connection

The maximum number of computers controlled by a Master/Slav e conf iguration with all SNV104s is 16 with 4 Slaves and each Slav e connects to 4 computers, see figure 11. For an all SNV108s conf iguration, the number is 64 with 8 Slav es and each Slav e connects to 8 computers, see f igure 12.

Figure 12: Cascaded 8-port NovaViews

Change Configuration while Running Dev ices (computers or Nov aViews) at any 'PC x' port can be changed at any time after initial power-up. If y ou change any one of the “PC 1” to “PC 8” ports connection f rom a computer to a Slave or vice versa, or replace the dev ices of a port; the new Slave must be turned off before it is connected to the Master. Before unplugging the cables from a computer, you should issue a STOP-A command for that computer, unplug the cables, re-arrange connection, plug the cables back to the computer, issue a GO command for that computer and resume normal operation.

Operation Selecting a computer is the same as SNV108 if both users are not accessing the same computer. A computer can only be operated by one user at a time. When a second user tries to access the computer already operated by the other one; his screen becomes black and key board LEDs flash one-by -one (Num Lock/Caps Lock/Scroll Lock/Compose) indicating the computer is restricted from access. He can either wait till the screen shows up again or select another computer by issuing hotkey command or by pressing the f ront panel pushbutton. Whenev er the screen image is available, your are able to operate the computer; in the mean time, restrict the other user from operating the same computer. After you stop operating the computer f or a period of time (i.e. User Timeout), both users regain control of the computer. For the detail setting of User Timeout, please ref er to the hotkey command. There is an A/B button at the v ery lower right of the f ront panel. It is used to toggle between User A and User B f or other pushbutton operation. Normal operation - Green light indicates the corresponding computer is powered on, and red light indicates the corresponding computer is selected. Two red LEDs are on when two users select diff erent computers, and one red LED is on when both users select the same computer. User A wants to select a computer - Under normal operation: Tap the

A/B button once (the left side of the A/B LED starts to f lash), then press any pushbutton to select a computer.

User B wants to select a computer - Tap the A/B button twice (the right side of the A/B LED starts to f lash), then press any pushbutton to select a computer.

Operation Operation is the same as a single SNV2208. You may select a computer by pressing a front pushbutton or issuing a hot-key command. To access the computer #5:2 as shown in figure 14, y ou may enter either one of the hotkey commands f rom either one of the CONSOLE, because PC 5 and PC 6 of the Master are paired. lef t Ctrl + lef t Ctrl + 5 + 2 or lef t Ctrl + lef t Ctrl + 6 + 2 As a ref erence: computer #1:1 equals #2:1; #3:6 equals #4:6, #5:8 equals #6:8 and #7:8 equals #8:8. There can be as many as 32 (=8 x 4) computers in the f igure 14 connection. It enables two users to operate 32 computers simultaneously.

21

Multi-user and Restricted Access SUN KVM switches of different models can be cascaded together to f orm a system that each user's privilege is determined by the connection. Figure 15 shows a conf iguration f or three users and 24 computers with dif f erent priv ilege f or each user.

Figure 15: Master / Slave SNV2208 connection

User A and User B can access 2 out of 12 computers, PC2 ~ PC5 and #7:1 ~ #7:8, simultaneously regardless of User C operation. While User A is accessing a computer (#1:1 ~ #1:8), User B can access any computer except #1:1 ~ #1:8 regardless of User C operation.
