New Mexico Society News Below is an extract of the 2012 NMSSAR report delivered by Past NMSSAR President George Biles at the Soci-ety’s annual meeting in Albuquerque on January 26, 2013. “Compatriots, thank you for the opportunity to serve the New Mexico Society of the SAR as your 2012 President. It was an honor and a privilege to perform these duties for NMSSAR. I represented, with great pride, NMSSAR at the Spring and Fall SAR Leadership meetings in Louisville, KY and at the National Congress held in Phoenix, AZ. My term as President of the NMSSAR ended at our annual meeting held in Albuquerque on January 26. For those of you who could not attend this meeting, below is a foreshortened version of the 2012 President’s Report made to Society attendees. Each Society Officer and Committee Chairman also gave written and verbal reports about their accomplishments during this meeting. 2012 was an exceptional year for us. Thanks to every Compat-riot for your service to the SAR.

2012 Report of the NMSSAR President

The NMSSAR established various measurable goals for 2012. A brief summary of these goals along with com-ments follows: Encourage maximum participation in the AZ/NM Congress in Phoenix: The New Mexico Society was well-represented at the 112th Congress. Overall, there were about 429 participants at the Congress in Phoenix, far in excess of planners’ expectations. Well done to all the participants; particularly Congress Credentials Chairman Gene Tomlinson, Teddy Adams who served as a Day Captain, Perkins and Patricia Patton who raffled a wall hanging Patricia created, Jim Thornton who was sworn in as Rocky Mountain District Vice President General, NMSSAR ladies who ran the ladies programs and staffed the desk, and George Garcia’s NMSSAR Color Guard and participating members! NMSSAR needs to induct new members: NMSSAR challenged itself to induct 3 new members per chapter in 2012 – a total of 12 new members. The NMSSAR actually was able to process and induct 26 new members in 2012. Congratulations to the Genealogists and Compatriots who assisted in this remarkable effort: especially Robert Northrup of Gadsden, John Robinson of Albuquerque, Ray Alexander of NMSSAR, and all the others who provided tireless assistance in achieving this exceptional increase in our Society’s membership. We increased our Society’s membership by over 22%. Well done! Acknowledge local police, firefighter, and emergency medical personnel with SAR awards: The Gadsden and Albuquerque Chapters made these types of awards to deserving first responder recipients. Congratulations! Maximize the exposure of the NMSSAR color guard: Compatriot George Garcia’s talk at our annual meeting about NMSSAR Color Guard activities during 2012 revealed that this goal was achieved. Well done to you, To-cayo George, and to the Color Guard. Publicize our activities in the newsletter: Simply look at the NSSAR website to see how well Compatriot David Lee Harris accomplished this during 2012. Well done to David Lee Harris, Gene Tomlinson, Sam Baty, George Garcia, as well as to William Baker, NMSSAR webmaster, and all individuals who submitted materials to the Newsletter and the website!

Thank you, NMSSAR Compatriots, for the opportunity to serve as the 2012 President of our Society. I urge every New Mexico Compatriot to volunteer for an officer’s position or as a Committee member of the NMSSAR. Each one of us hails from sturdy stock. It’s up to us to keep the goals and sacrifices of our Revolutionary ancestors alive and remembered. To quote Admiral William (“Bull”) Halsey: All problems become smaller if you don’t dodge them but confront them. Please give as much of your time as you can to the SAR. We need you.”

2013 President’s Message to Compatriots

Welcome to the New Mexico Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. As 2013 President of the New Mexico Society, I extend our entire membership's greetings to you. The New Mexico Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NMSSAR) has been in existence since 1908 and currently consists of four chapters. The oldest chapter is the Albuquerque Chapter followed by the Santa Fe chapter. The Gadsden Chapter in Las Cruces was formed in 1986. The newest chapter, formed in 2012, is the Three Rivers Chapter in Farmington. Altogether, the entire Society consists of about 109 members who live throughout the State of New Mexico. New Mexico is the fifth largest state in the United States of America.

In 2013, NMSSAR is pursuing various explicit goals. These are:

To recognize and learn more about the founders of the New Mexico Society Sons of the American Revolu-tion, and to locate and give recognition to the final resting place of these founders.

To recruit new members and to grow the organization. The median age of NMSSAR's membership is al-most 67. NMSSAR needs to induct new and younger members, and each chapter has been challenged to set a goal to induct at least three (3) new members in 2013.

To update and publish the NMSSAR Handbook, Constitution, and By-Laws. Several years ago the Society began an update to the Duties of the Offices of the Society. Our goal this year is to review and complete that effort, as well as the complete update/rewrite of the State Constitution and By-Laws.

To publicize and maintain NMSSAR activities in the newsletter: In this NMSSAR website can be found eve-ry quarterly issue of the New Mexico Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. These issues show the ex-emplary activities of our New Mexico chapters.

To acknowledge local police, firefighter, and emergency medical personnel with SAR awards: Each Chapter is seeking to identify deserving personnel to receive recognition from the Sons of the American Revolution.

To maintain Support at both the State and Chapter level of the ROTC program, and to expand the coordi-nation and recognition of the ROTC programs and Essay Contests.

To develop and expand the NMSSAR support of the Eagle Scout program.

To develop, recruit, and train new officers at both the State and Chapter level.

To update the NMSSAR historical record: NMSSAR is older than the State of New Mexico. New Mexico achieved statehood in 1912 and 2012 was New Mexico's Centennial. The NMSSAR was founded even earlier than the State - 1908. A published history of the NMSSAR Society from 1908 until 1979 exists. In an ongoing ef-fort the new State Historian has been charged with the task of researching and bringing the NMSSAR History up to date from 1979 to the present.

To make the NMSSAR color guard widely available to the New Mexico community: Please view the various sections in this website of the NMSSAR Color Guard under the inspired leadership of Color Guard Captain George Garcia. For example, one picture shows New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez with members of the NMSSAR Color Guard. A number of other pictures show the Color Guard in a variety of settings, including one in Santa Fe with the Spanish Ambassador to the United States of America.

The NMSSAR Color Guard welcomes any donation made to the Color Guard to help with the expenses of procuring, maintaining, and storing of the Color Guard Uniforms. In addition there are the expenses and travel involved in the many requests for appearances that the Color Guard could use some assistance with, as well as recruiting new members.

If you would like to make a donation please send it to the NMSSAR Treasurer, P.O. Box 15128, Rio Ran-cho, New Mexico 87174. (Any amount is welcome!)

Whether you live in New Mexico, or are just visiting, we hope you will visit our website again and find out more about NMSSAR. The Webmaster, William H. Baker who is a member of the Gadsden Chapter, is attentive in keeping the materials herein fresh and current. NMSSAR is an active society that welcomes visitors. Look through the calendar to see where and when each Chapter meeting will occur.

Fraternally, Michael E. Barger

In February 2013 a power point presentation on the Spanish Contribution to the American Revolution and the Presidio Soldiers assigned to Santa Fe was presented to our Albuquerque Chapter monthly meeting. On May 4th, I presented the power point presentation to approx. 65 persons,(18 high school student) at the" Rancho de Las Golondrians",44 miles north of Albuquerque. On May 18th, wearing our Presidio uniform, I presented our power point to the "Lulac Convention along with Dr. Thomas E. Chavez to about 75 members, at the Sheraton Uptown. Many of them were not aware of Spain's Con-tribution to the American Revolution. Afterwards a discussion was held as to why past history is not taught in our state schools, I asked this question, their answer was that the state curriculum is set to teach students today's technology for today’s world. On June 1st, I presented another power point presentation at the NM Veterans Memorial before 14 people, a small group - to early on a Saturday Moring!!!. On July 4th, 2013, I made the same presentation to the DAR Lew Wallace Chapter at the Tannowan Country Club, at their "Bell Ringer Breakfast before 49 members and their guests It was well received. .Due to our Color Guard members not being available (they were at our SAR National Congress or on vacation, we were not able to partic-ipate as in past events like presenting the Colors at the, 4th of July Pancake Breakfast In Santa Fe. On August 10th, I made our power point presentation to the Friendship Force organization at the Elagante Hotel with 39 members attending, they showed great interest. On August 28,29.and 30th,compariot Lionel Rael and I were asked to present the Colors at the opening ceremo-nies at the 20th anniversary of the Hispanic Genealogical Research Center of New Mexico. On Saturday Aug 31st, I was asked to present our power point presentation. (Compatriot Rael and I are members.) Attending were approx. 134 members of the Genealogical Research Society from other parts of the country .I showed our Spanish Presidio Soldiers Poster listing some of our ancestors that descended from some of Spanish Presidio Soldiers. Many in attendence were very interested and writing down information about those who gave their pesos in support of our American Revolution and their descendants Compatriot George Cecilio Garcia, First Vice President, NMSSAR, Oct. 5th, 2013

My 12th great grandfather, Alonso 1, led the settlers, priests and others out of Nueva Espana south to El Paso during the Indian Revolt of 1680. My 7th great grandfather was Vicente Gar-cia de Noriega, who enlisted in the Spanish Presidio in Santa Fe, Nueva Espana in 1780. He was killed while on duty in 1792. I have his enlistment papers, written in beautiful Spanish calligraphy, signed by then Governor Juan Baustita de Anza, explorer of the Pacific Coast of California before he was appointed Governor of Santa Fe, Nueva Espana. Compatroits Can Again Support the

New Mexico Society Color Guard

New Mexico Compatriots can still donate to the New Mexico Color Guard. Uniforms for new members need to be purchased and additional items for all Color Guard Members can be added as funds are available. The form at the bottom of this page will provide you with the information for making your donation.

Color Guard members contributed $200 each for hats, shirts, socks, garters and gloves. The workcoat and breeches are purchased by the NMSSAR Color Guard using specific measurements and working with the Company in Arizona to procure the items. The work coat and breeches can cost over $550.00 each and since your donations purchased the items they are the property of the State Society.

At the present time there are two active Color Guard members in the Santa Fe Chapter: Jim Thornton, and Jimmie Fennell. A uniform is still in the possession of Charles Martinez who has been inactive for the past two years. The Albuquerque Chapter has four active members: Lionel Rael, Teddy Adams, Mark Ahlen and George Garcia (Color Guard Commander). There are two uniforms available with the passing of Jim Hesse and the moving out of State by Gene Tomlinson.

Commitment to the Color Guard requires time and effort by any Compatriot. There is a demand for the Color Guard in Both Santa Fe and Albuquerque to present and post the Colors and to Parade the Colors. There are openings for several, perhaps as many as five or six members (Three in Santa Fe and two or more in Albuquerque). In addition the Gadsden Chapter, if there is interest, can begin to form a Color Guard unit for the southern part of the State.

Your concern and participation in the Color Guard is requested. Let’s put the Color Guard in action and show the Colors when-ever and where-ever they are requested. The results will be an increased membership in the SAR, presenting our story and teaching our citizens about the SAR and how the Spanish supported the cause. This can best be done with an active and fully supported Color Guard.

New Mexico State Medal of Distinguished Service Awarded The NMSSAR State Medal of Distinguished Service was presented on April 27, 2013 to Former NMSSAR Presi-dent Gene Tomlinson at the annual meeting of the Michigan Society of the SAR held in Lansing, Michigan. Gene is now a dual member of NMSSAR and MISSAR. Former President George Biles, representing the NMSSAR, pre-sented the award. The State Medal of Distinguished Service is the highest Medal that can be awarded by a State Society President and can be presented only once during a President’s tenure. Gene’s services to NMSSAR were highlighted during the formal award ceremony included:

Gene initiated the quarterly NM on-line and mailed newsletters. He edited and wrote columns for the

NMSSAR newsletter over a five year period. Additionally he provided webmaster Compatriot William

Baker with substantive materials for inclusion in our NMSSAR website and also the Rocky Mountain Dis-

trict website.

Gene undertook much of the detailed research that created the newly formed NMSSAR Color Guard and

its 1780 Spanish Presidio Uniforms. He aided in the raising of funds to purchase 9 uniforms.

He coordinated writings and inputs about Spanish contributions to the American Revolution. Various ar-

ticles appeared in the SAR magazine and on the SAR website.

Gene chaired the Registration and Credentials Committee in Phoenix for the SAR 122nd Congress. The

Congress hosted over 400 registrants. His work helped expedite the registering of this large turnout of

Compatriots and their spouses.

Gene coordinated, helped to prepare, and helped deliver along with Compatriot George Garcia, NMS-

SAR Color Guard Captain, a 2 hour (PowerPoint) Congress session on Spanish involvement in the Ameri-

can Revolution, the Spanish Presidios in North America, particularly the Santa Fé Presidio.

Gene shepherded through the Society a complete revamp of our NMSSAR Bylaws and Constitution. This

was a major accomplishment.

These and a myriad of other of Gene’s many SAR-related activities were deserving of the NMSSAR high-

est award: the SAR’s State Medal of Distinguished Service.

As the pictures show, Gene received the NMSSAR Medal of Distinguished Service flanked by members of the Michigan Society’s Color Guard. The 50 plus MISSAR Compatriots and their guests gave Gene Tomlinson a rous-ing ovation when he received this award from the New Mexico Society.

Gene is now the 2nd Vice President of the Detroit Metro Chapter of the MISSAR and has presented three Power Point Presentation to the Chapter including one about the New Mexico Society and another about the 122 Na-tional SAR Congress in Phoenix. His third Presentation is the History of the Detroit Metro Chapter to commemo-rate the Chapters Centennial.

NMSSAR Chapter News

Two reports of The Albuquerque Chapter for various activities over the past 12 months follow:

On September 22, 2012 Albuquerque SAR Chapter President John Robinson Initiates the Fall 2012 Season - NMSSAR President George Biles in Attend-ance

From left to right: Albuquerque SAR Chapter President John Robinson and NMSSAR President George Biles Albuquerque (ABQ) SAR Chapter President John Robinson presided over the first meeting of the fall 2012 sea-son. In attendance was NMSSAR President George Biles. The very affable President Biles added a lot to the meeting. During the social period (1130 – 1200), he went around and casually and enthusiastically talked to the SAR members and their guests. It was a very enjoyable time for all involved. As was his usual modus operandi, President Robinson handled all of the agenda items in a very professional and efficient manner. The meeting had many items on the agenda, as ABQ SAR members were busy over the summer. There were some 6 items of old business, 7 committee reports, and 6 items of new business on the agenda. A high priority on the agenda was a review of the 2012 SAR Congress that was held in Phoenix, AZ in July, 2012. The state of New Mexico SAR (NMSSAR) was a co-host of the Congress along with the Arizona SAR Chapters. President Biles gave the review. The ABQ SAR Chapter was honored to have Ben Braden, retired U.S. Marine Corps Colonel of Infantry, as its guest speaker. Colonel Braden was masterful in his discussion of “Marine fire power 1775 to present.” The meeting was held at Landry’s Seafood Restaurant. It was a great choice, as the number of people in attendance was 29, which more than doubled the typical number of attendees. Primary among these were the recommenda-tion by Compatriot Farris to buy a viewgraph projector and the suggestion by Compatriot Barger to have a pos-sible December meeting that would be informal. The proposed December meeting would address any issues that needed to be resolved. The ABQ SAR members voted to commission Compatriot Farris pay up to $500.00 for a viewgraph projector and, if necessary, a screen. Nothing definite was decided on a December meeting, as members worried that there were too many competing functions in December. The meeting concluded with the SAR Recessional.

During the social period that was set at the beginning of the meeting, President Rael socialized with attendees at the meeting and handled business issues with members of the board (as he does with Chaplain Henry above). As was his usual modus operendi, President Rael handled all of the agenda items in a very professional and efficient manner. The meeting had many items on the agenda, as ABQ SAR members were busy over the summer. There were a number of old business, committee reports, and new business on the agenda. The ABQ SAR Chapter was honored to have Ray Shelton, retired U.S. Marine Lieutenant Colonel, as its guest speaker. Colonel Shelton made it abundantly clear that there is a lot of planning that goes into flying the President. Many of the issues were not thought of by the majority of the people attending the meeting. Colonel Shelton also cleared up the issue of what was done on the white side as opposed to green support. The white side involves flying the President only, while green support involves both Presidential flight and the development of new Ma-rine aircraft. The Gadsden Chapter (President Samuel Bradley) reports various activities over the past 12 months:

On April 6, we awarded a Certificate of Commendation to Robert Jakcsy of Las Cruces in recognition of exempla-ry patriotism in the display of the flag of the United States. Mr. Jakcsy is a 21-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force and is a strong patriot. He displays his flag in strict accordance with guidelines. I also gave him a new flag on be-half of the Chapter. Chapter participation in the Bataan Death March Memorial March at WSMR was assigned a water station in con-junction with a veteran's organization. We made several awards to outstanding ROTC cadets. Capt. Walt Baker participated in most of those presenta-tions. On June 15 we had a joint meeting with the local DAR Chapter. That meeting was well attended. Following the meeting, the Gadsden Chapter held a Board of Managers meeting at which we assigned responsibility for con-tacting various agencies to acquire nominees for first responder awards. This has been quite a summer for some Chapter members. Capt. Walt Baker, Bob Northrup and Andrew Lyngar have all had major surgery. Bob Northrup had both hips replaced. Despite the time out for surgery and therapy, he has done a whale of a job helping new members complete their applications. We will induct another new member at our September 21 meeting. The Chapter now has members from Santa Teresa, El Paso, Alamogordo, Elephant Butte, and Silver City, as well as from Las Cruces. We found a permanent home for Gadsden Chapter meetings at the Sunset Grill at Sonoma Ranch Golf Club. They provide us a very nice private room at no additional charge, and even a special menu so that we may order our lunch choice in advance of each meeting.

There were no reports of activities from Santa Fe Chapter or from Three Rivers Chapter for this pe-

riod, though luncheon meetings and morning coffee meetings were held.
