Overview

In the past, real-time voice communication can only be done on the PSTN. With the circuit switched technology, every call takes up a dedicated bandwidth. End-to-end calls are established on the basis of a sequence of digits, and the PSTN dedicates a physical path between callers. The telephone equipment establishes the call path at the beginning of a call and occupies the dedicated path till the end of the call. Compared to the PSTN, an Internet Protocol (IP) network has a packet-switched architecture. Data is transmitted in packets, and the path from end to end can vary within an established session. The data packets also contain the destination IP address information, with which packets are routed. As networking environments change, routing devices are updated with dynamic protocols. IP1000 is a high performance embedded VoIP Gateway that transmits voice over packet switched networks and route it to circuit switched networks.

All-in-one Design

IP1000 contains its own processor, memory, and network interface; it works independently and intelligently! Simply connect it to your IP network and PSTN, and then you are ready to talk via the Internet and Intranet. All of the communication costs will be eliminated except the local networks connection charge. IP1000 is the most convenient embedded VoIP gateway for users to make Internet phone calls without the hassle of changing the existing infrastructure.

Comprehensive Operation Modes

IP1000 is a reliable bridge between two different locations. The FXO/FXS telephone interface provides the system with an ultra flexible PSTN connection. Moreover, IP1000 is supported by DSG Global Internet Telephony Network; users can also talk to any regular phone users anywhere.

Telecommuters can dial 87654321 to reach your IP10000. They will hear the dial tone. They can dial to get an outgoing line from the office and then dial the customer’s phone number to make long distance calls.

4. Patterns for Connecting with a PBX

When you use PBX, an interval will occur between dialing the CO line access code and getting an outside line assigned by the PBX. If your IP1000 or Remote IP1000 is connected to a PBX, you might need to send a pulse signal to generate a pause so as to provide the interval. You can assign a comma sign (,) in the Dest. Pattern when you create an entry of Dial Plan. The comma creates a one-second pause. Notice that when you connect IP1000 to a PBX, if your IP1000 provides FXO interface, connect it to the PBX extension side. Each port will then be assigned an extension number. If your IP1000 provides FXS interface, connect it to PBX trunk side.

Example 6: This entry is to setup a pattern to connect Local IP1000 to Remote PSTN. Both sides of IP1000 are FXO type connected to a PBX. One port of Local IP1000 is assigned the extension number as 111. Your Remote IP1000 has been assigned a code as 8. The CO line access code for Remote PBX is 0. The remote IP1000 IP address is 192.168.001.300. If you are in the US and would like to call a customer (tel: 12345678) in Taipei (area code: 2), Taiwan (country code: 886), create an entry as below.

[No] Type Dest. Pattern Remote IP Port No Description [006] VOIP 8.,………. 192.168.001.300 FXO AUTO Taipei customer Select entry to setup (1-100, quit) :

2. Dial to call the customer in Taipei, Taiwan. The digit helps you connect to the Remote IP1000. The digit helps the Remote IP1000 dial 0 and make a pause as the setting of “,” so as to get a outgoing line.

Note: If your PBX system requires a longer pause to get a CO line after you dial the access code, you may enter more comma signs (,,,) to match the PBX parameter.

Note: Do not enter the CO line access code for the Remote PBX in the Dest. Pattern because it might be misunderstood as a code for Remote IP1000.

DHCP Function (Required for DHCP Environment)

IP1000 supports DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), a protocol for assigning dynamic IP addresses to devices on a network. Every DSG VoIP Device has its unique 6-digit Device ID Number. You may find your Device ID Number at configuration item 0 or at the back of IP1000. You can talk to the other DSG VoIP Devices (e.g. IP1000, IPStar, InterStar, InterPhone) by simply dialing the receiver’s Device ID Number with a prefix “ ” and a suffix “ ” button if they are online. This is a non-editable function. If you would like to call someone not equipped any VoIP device, you will have to subscribe DSG Internet Telephony Service. You will be given calling points stored in a 10-digit ITSP Account or associated with your 6-digit Device ID Number. With a valid account, you can make Internet phone calls to any regular telephone within available service areas. You can find the status of your calling points stored in Device ID Number from Setting Item (0) Device ID.

Followed by your Device ID Number, you will also find the balance of calling points stored in your Device ID Number.

Hang-up Timeout and VAD Setup

This section covers the hang up issues associated with various regional POTS and PBX systems interoperating with IP1000. By tuning the additional 6 parameters on Item 24, users can allow IP1000 to detect the busy tone and silence more accurately for efficiently disconnecting phone calls and saving bandwidth consumptions. The busy tone signal is an indication of the end of a conversation or unavailability of the remote party. Set Parameters 1-4 to define the busy tone so that IP1000 can hang-up the call and/or release the CO line in time. Silence is also an indication of the end of a conversation or a result after a call been placed by accident. Set Parameter 5 to define the duration of silence for hang-up. Silence, as an interval during a conversation, is transmitted over the network like other voice packet. IP1000 provides Voice Activity Detection (VAD) to send silence indicator packet instead of full packet to reduce the traffic. On Parameter 6 set the level of volume as the silence. Step 1: At the prompt displays Select the option to setup: , input <24> and press ENTER to edit. The prompt will

show the following 5 parameters and their default settings.

Select entry to setup (1-6, quit) : 24 1) Busy tone cycles to hangup (2-9) : 4 2) Minimum busy tone length (100-1200 ms) : 200 3) Maximum busy tone length (100-1200 ms) : 600 4) Busy tone length tolerance (20-400 ms) : 80 5) Maximum silence to hangup (10-120 sec) : 30 6) Voice Activity Detection Level (0-8) : 3

Step 2: At the prompt Select entry to setup (1-6, quit): , input <1> and press ENTER to edit 1)Busy tone cycles to

hangup. Based on your phone system’s setting, select the number of busy tone rings from 2 to 9 for IP1000 to disconnect the line after detecting the busy tone. Press ENTER to save.

The default setting is “4 “. That means after detecting continuous 4 rings of effective busy tone, IP1000

will deem that the conversation comes to an end and will disconnect the line. Select entry to setup (1-6, quit): 1 1) Busy tone cycles to hangup (2-9): 4

Step 3: At the prompt Select entry to setup (1-6, quit): , input <2>/<3> and press ENTER to edit 2) Minimum

busy tone length / 3) Maximum busy tone length. Based on the phone system’s setting, select a range from 100 to 1200 ms to define the minimum and maximum length of a busy tone. Press ENTER to save.

The default setting is “200”ms to “600” ms. It means after detecting a tone between 200 ms to 600 ms,

IP1000 will deem it an effective busy tone in the circumstance. Select entry to setup (1-6, quit): 2 2) Minimum busy tone length (100-1200 ms): 200 Select entry to setup (1-6, quit): 3 3) Maximum busy tone length (100-1200 ms): 600

Make Sure You Are Online

Before you make an Internet call, you have to connect to the Internet successfully. First make sure the LED of LINK is on; it means your IP1000 is connected to your LAN successfully. In VPN Mode, if the LED of ID is off, it means your IP1000 is not registered to DSG Center and users can make peer-to-peer phone calls, e.g. from one IP1000 to the remote IP1000 and remote PSTN. In ITSP Mode, if the LED of ID is on, it means your IP1000 is registered to DSG Center and users can make phone calls to the remote IP1000, other DSG VoIP devices such as IPStar, InterStar and InterPhone, and worldwide regular telephone users. For communication between two sites, please also make sure your Remote IP1000 has input your IP1000 IP address into its entries of Dial Plan. When you initiate calls to remote party by using Dial Plan, you need to dial a prefix and a suffix sign. However in VPN Mode, you can skip the prefix sign.
