Anti-Valentine’s Day Party On Friday, February 11 th , the La Vista Public Library held its 2 nd Annual Teen Anti-Valentine’s Day party. The point of such a party is to give teens that are single a chance to celebrate on a holiday that is for couples. Nearly 20 teens showed up to have fun! The first activity was sugar cookie decorating. There were loads of cookies, food markers, frosting, M&Ms, and sprinkles to decorate with. Strawberry syrup added a nice touch of “blood” to many cookies. After the cookie, Lindsey, the Teen Coordinator, raffled off the party prizes—heart- shaped containers of gooey gack that was slimy, stretchy, bouncy, and glow-in-the-dark! After everyone got a prize there was a short break to play with the slime and socialize. Bouncing it high off the meeting room walls was a popular activity! The evening then ended with a movie and snacks. The Teen Anti-Valentine’s Day Party is now an annual event that is usually held the second week of February at the library. We look forward to seeing you there next year! Gummi Surgery By Lindsey If you weren’t at February’s monthly “Make Stuff” event you missed out on a huge sugar rush! The craft was Gummi Surgery. There were gummies of all kinds coming out of the woodwork. We had boxes of Scooby-Doo, Super Mario, dinosaur, and shark fruit snacks along with bags of normal gummi worms and sour gummi worms to work with. To top it all off, you can’t do Gummi Surgery without gummi bears so there was a four-pound bag of the delectable little critters. What is Gummi Surgery? Anti-Valentine’s Day Party

On Friday, February 11th, the La Vista Public Library held its 2nd Annual Teen Anti-Valentine’s Day party. The point of such a party is to give teens that are single a chance to celebrate on a holiday that is for couples.

Nearly 20 teens showed up to have fun! The first activity was sugar cookie decorating. There were loads of cookies, food markers, frosting,

M&Ms, and sprinkles to decorate with. Strawberry syrup

added a nice touch of “blood” to many cookies. After the cookie, Lindsey, the Teen Coordinator, raffled off the party prizes—heart-shaped containers of gooey gack that was slimy, stretchy, bouncy, and glow-in-the-dark!

Gummi Surgery By Lindsey

If you weren’t at February’s monthly “Make Stuff” event you missed out on a huge sugar rush!

A fun craft that you get to play with and eat! We

took the various gummies and played Frankenstein with them, creating new monstrosities. Lindsey gave Freddie from Scooby-Doo a new body—that of a Juju fish. Audi made a beautiful tiara of gummi worms and Super Mario stars. Haley created one of the best concoctions of the night—a creature with the body of a Juju fish, two gummi bear bodies as arms and the head of Yoshi! The evening ended with a creative collaboration among Haley and Huyen-Yen: In preparation for the TAB Life-Sized Candy Land to be held this summer they created Candy Gummi Land—a feat that took up two whole paper plates.

Teen “Make Stuff” events are held once a month during the school year. See calendar for exact dates and times. “Make Stuff” events earn you $25 Book Bucks for participating.

Meat WaterJournalism PieceBy Haley

Humans love flavored water. Now there is a strange and new flavor hitting the scenes. . . .

Some water comes in flavors while others don’t and when it doesn’t some people create their own flavor. Flavors go from standard grape, cherry, and strawberry to tea and crystal cider.

MeatWater was created by New Yorker Tim Krautkraemer. Tim created this water with his company, MeatWater, to promote healthier living and was made sometime in 2008.

“It was a fad and eventually will wear out quickly,” said Richard Christensen.

Some people agree with Richard while others, like the company MeatWater, disagree. The company has posted on their website, www.dinnerinabottle.com, that they have reached their fiftieth flavor and more requests are coming in.

A few flavors MeatWater has produced include beef jerky, beef stroganoff, cheeseburger, chicken teriyaki, dirty hot dog, fish and chips, Hungarian goulash, Italian sausage, and duck.

They have also produced unique flavors such as fried oysters, stuffed quail, liverwurst sandwich, venison, beef salad, and sushi.

This mix of proteins that taste like meat is supposed to quench your thirst and help build muscles. While some people are reaching for a bottle of MeatWater instead of meat, many are saying, “Gross,” and aren’t touching it.

Jay Leno even made fun of it four times on his show. Though later he admitted it was delicious.

“We shouldn’t mess with Mother Nature. She is doing just fine on her own,” said Richard Christensen.

Mother Nature created fruit and vegetables. Would she really be okay with manipulating things to human advantage? That is for the population of America to decide.

Is MeatWater the next big thing or is it a fad about to fade?

Mind’s EyeA Poem by Keelia

It’s funny,How your mind is always working.Even when you’re asleepYour mind plays tricks on you.You may be thinking illusions,That’s correct. But what about in your mind’s eye?Isn’t there tricks there?I’ve discovered that there are tricks here. This is where the things easiest to seeAre last to be found.Where something moves,While staying in the same spot. This is where ghosts were invented.Where fiction is combined with fact. When the human race can die out,But never leave the Earth.Where the idea of Albert Einstein being a super genius,Can turn to reality. So you see?Without your mind’s eye,We can’t live. When your mind works like that,You’re tricked.

April Book ReviewBy Lindsey

A book I read recently and enjoyed was Lauren Baratz-Logsted’s The Twin’s Daughter. It follows the story of Lucy, a young girl who lives a charmed, boring life in Victorian London. It all changes when a knock at the door reveals Helen Smythe, the long-lost twin of Lucy's mother, Aliese. Aliese was raised in wealth and while Helen lived in an orphanage. Aliese welcomes Helen into the family. After months of coaching on social behavior, Helen and Aliese are impossible to tell apart. All seems well until the day when Lucy comes home to find Helen and her mother in a bloody room—one dead and one alive. Lucy is convinced it is her mother who survived but as years pass, her certainty wanes. The Twin’s Daughter is a suspenseful and fast-paced thriller filled with Gothic overtones and intrigue. As the twists and turns keep coming and the clues and evidence pile up, this book will truly keep readers guessing till the very end.
