  • 1. TEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF SAY IT TO MY FACE Tom And Lilly

2. 1. 3. 1. This first shot which I have taken from ourdocumentary acts as iconography for our topic. It connotes that the majority of the cyber bullying happens via social media networks and nearly always via web 2.0. The message being typed, you're nothing replicates what was said to Hannah Smith, however we have mediated it slightly as this isn't it actually being said to Hannah Smith it is a copy which we have created as this is how we believe it to be. This reflects Baudrillards theory regarding reality. 4. 2. 5. 2. This question asked to the audience on a bluebackground and white writing matches the same background that Facebook use and also the same font- Lucida Grande. This acts as iconography for Facebook and subconsciously catches the audience eye to read the message as it is a font and colour they are used to seeing lots as the majority of teenagers use Facebook. In addition the blue background connotes happiness and peace which would suggest we are at the Equilibrium stage of Todorov's Equilibrium theory which we are as it appears at the start of our documentary. 6. 3. 7. 3. It is conventional to include talking heads indocumentaries and we have done this. Her message that she delivers connotes what young people think cyber bullying actually is. She acts as a representation of the lack of knowledge that Younger people have about cyber bullying. The medium shot lasting a duration of 5 seconds is conventional for documentaries and it connotes that what she is saying is the common answer that every young person would give. However if we had of used a close up of her face saying her view then this would have connoted that her definition is exactly what cyber bullying is. 8. 4. 9. 4. This medium shot of the Twitter logo in our motionanimation, supported by the voice of god statistics regarding how many people use twitter connotes the cause of the problem comes from the social networking sites as people aren't safe on them. The logo acts as iconography for the topic which we are tackling. It is conventional to have linked montage footage supporting what the voice of god is saying. It is clear that we have met this convention with great success. 10. 5. 11. 5. This long shot of the skateboarder connoteshappy, young children who are oblivious to the acts of cyber bullying that could take place at any time. However his centralised position to the shot and his individual presence connotes he is vulnerable and isolated to be cyber bullied at any time. This is contrasted by the light blue sky which has been purposely colour corrected to give a stark contrast between the subject and the background. This connotes that actually he is safe whilst playing out on his skateboard. However when he goes onto the internet he 12. 6. 13. 6. The black silhouette surrounded by the dauntinggreen background connotes that the subject is trapped and had nowhere to go when she was being cyber bullied. It connotes she had no one to turn to for help. The blacked out interviewee also connotes her fear of telling her story and the devastating effect which it has left upon her. It is clear to see by her relatively slow speech pattern that she struggles to come to term with what has happen. 14. 7. 15. 7. The medium shot of the girl in the montagefootage connotes how the subject x felt when she was being cyber bullied. The contrast between the black t-shirt of the girl and the white wall connotes that the girl is lost and has no one to turn to. It shows how she cant speak to anyone in the situation she is and that there is no one to turn to. 16. 8. 17. 8. The use of the blur font style connotes that theabuse message were over a period of time as they can be seen dissolving onto and off of the screen. This would connote that it wasnt a one off thing and that Hannah was receiving abusive messages on a regular basis. The positioning of the camera and the subject, she is hidden behind the computer screen, would connote that she felt trapped by these messages and that she felt that she couldnt turn to anyone. 18. 9. 19. 9. The medium shot of Dave smith talking in hisinterview central to the shot connotes the importance of what he is saying and the impact that his words have upon the viewers. The positioning of his right arm outwards revealing his Tattoo remembering Hannah connotes his love for her and desire to put a stop to cyber bullying. 20. 10. 21. 10. The black and white shot of the roundaboutspinning round connotes that cyber bullying is an on-going problem and that it is very difficult to make it stop as it will just keep carrying on. The black and white connotes the unhappiness that people feel when they are being cyber bullied and the impact it can have which is possible suicide in Hannah's case. 22. 11. 23. 11. The mouse and the keyboard act as iconographyfor the topic which we are battling. The use of rack focus connotes that once you type something and send it that you wont ever be able to get it back as it will always be out there somewhere and you will be responsible for that message. The close up on the mouse connotes the power that one person can have just with a mouse which controls the computer. 24. 12. 25. 12. This long shot of a girl sat up against a wall withher head down looking into her phone connotes her loneliness and isolation. Her addiction to keep reading the messages to see what people have written about her or to see what people have been saying is clear to see. However this is supported by the red figure on the wall which over powers her and connotes that she is being bullied.
