All metal in contact with seawater, including coarse screens, fine screens, cooling water pumps, valves and pipework and any sheet piling associated with the cooling water system and also buried metal structure and tank bases shall be equipped with cathodic protection. The cathodic protection system shall be complete in all respects and fully automatic. For seawater platinized titanium electrodes and zinc reference and sensing electrodes shall be used. For buried structures appropriate anode materials shall be used for the ground beds and reference electrodes as advised by the relevant standards.
Contractor C shall, after commissioning the system, produce a report demonstrating that all buried pipework, equipment tank bases and metal in contact with seawater are suitably protected from corrosion.
6.8.3 Design and operating particulars
Contractor C shall supply equipment according to the standards taking into account specific particulars detailed below:
For design purposes the following minimum current densities shall be used for surfaces in contact with seawater.
a. bare steel surfaces – 100 m A/m2
b. coated steel surfaces – 50 m A/m2
The design minimum current densities shall be used for buried steel structures shall be:
i. uncoated pipes and bare steel surfaces – 50 m A/m2
ii. coated pipes – 2.5 m A/m2
iii. external surfaces of tank bottoms – 20 m A/m2.
The transformer/rectifier units shall have at least 50 per cent spare capacity over design.
6.8.4 Transformer rectifiers and control equipment
The transformers associated with the rectifier units shall be of the double wound air insulated type with an earthed metal screen provided between the primary and secondary windings. The equipment shall incorporate means for protecting transformers and rectifiers against damage due to overload or short-circuit of the dc output. The rectifiers shall be three phase full-wave bridge connected type. The ripple content of the output wave shall not exceed 5 per cent rms over the entire output range. An approved surge diverter shall be connected across the dc terminals.
