PACMANthe dots are back!

Problem Statement

• Design and fabricate an autonomous robot that can traverse through a maze.

Page 3: T'12_robotics_Pacman

Gameplay

• The game consists of four rounds – Elimination Round– Quarter Finals– Semi Finals– Finals

Page 4: T'12_robotics_Pacman

Elimination Round• These are solo matches.• In elimination each team would be given 3 runs. • A single run would consist of maximum 3 minutes.• In each run, your Robot has to collect as many coins as possible from the outer zone (ether) and the middle

zone (orbit). The inner zone (core) will be inaccessible in this round.• ‘Collecting’ the coin refers to the robot passing over the coin. Coins are represented by a LED light which

would automatically stop glowing once the robot passes over it.• The participants will be randomly allotted any one of the four starting positions, by picking up chits just

before each run.• You are not allowed to change the program fed into your robot once you are allocated starting point.• Restarting Criteria

– A team can ask for a restart from referee, if they feel their robot is stuck and unable to proceed. – In elimination round there is no limit in the number of restarts.– After restart your robot will be placed at the allotted starting point.– You are allowed to make mechanical changes between restarts. However the timer will not be stopped.

• It is compulsory to take all the runs consecutively one after another. However you would be given 1 minute of makeup time between two runs. During this time you are allowed to make mechanical changes in your robot but NOT CHANGE THE PROGRAM/CODE.

• Top 8 teams emerging from this round will qualify for the next round.• Your final score earned in elimination round would be summation of all the 3 runs

Page 5: T'12_robotics_Pacman

Quarter Finals• These matches will be played by two teams at a time and against each other• The 8 teams selected will be arranged in descending order of their scores earned in elimination round.• Matches will be organized in a way where 1st in the list will compete with 8th in the list. Likewise second

in list would compete with 7th and so on.• The robot has to collect as many coins as possible from the entire three zones in 5 minutes.• The participants may be randomly allotted any of the four starting positions by picking up chits, as in

elimination round. This will be done as follow:– The team with more points will pick the cheat and the opponent will be given the diagonally opposite position.

• Restarting Criteria– A team can ask for a restart from referee, if they feel their robot is stuck and unable to proceed. – In quarter finals up to a maximum of 5 restarts will be allowed.– After restart your robot will be placed at the allotted starting point.– You are allowed to make only mechanical changes between restarts. However the timer will not be stopped.

• The top 4 teams emerging from this round based on score will qualify for the semifinal round. In case of clash the winning team will be given preference. To make it more clear consider the following example– Suppose in Match 1 (Team A vs. Team B), the scores are 70 and 90 respectively. – Also in another match, Match 2 (Team C vs. Team D), the scores are 30 and 20 respectively.

• Though team A lost in Match 1, it will qualify for semifinals as it has scores more than both Team C and Team D

Semi Finals• The 4 teams selected will be arranged in descending order and matched will be held as per

the rule given in point 3 under Quarter Finals.• The robot has to collect as many coins as possible from the entire three zones in 5 minutes.• The team whose bot first picks the orange coinor with more score then opponent will be

the winner of this round.• The participants may be randomly allotted any of the four starting positions by picking up

chits, as in elimination round. The team with more points will pick the cheat and the opponent will be given the diagonally opposite position.

• Restarting Criteria– A team can ask for a restart from referee, if they feel their robot is stuck and unable to proceed. – In quarter finals up to a maximum of 3 restarts will be allowed.– After restart your robot will be placed at the allocated starting point.– You are allowed to make mechanical changes between restarts. However the timer will not be

stopped.• The top 2 teams emerging from this round based on score will qualify for the semifinal

round. In case of clash the winning team will be given preference.

Finals• The two teams who qualified in semifinals will play against each

other in this round.• A toss will be held between them, the winner of the toss has the

privilege to choose any of the four starting points. The opponent will have to take diagonally opposite starting point.

• Here the winning criteria are as follow:– If a team picks up the center orange coin unconditionally wins,

irrespective of the score of other teams.– If no team is able to capture orange coin then the team with more

number of points wins. • The game consists of only 1 match. • Match duration is 5 mins• You can take maximum of 3 restarts.

Scoring

• The points allotted to the coins in different zone are as follows:

• Ether zone: 10 pointsOrbital zone: 20 pointsCore zone: 30 pointsCentre Coin: Bonus 100 points

• Your score = Number of coins of each zone x Points per coin of that zone

Arena Specifications• The arena consists of walls of height 15 cm. there will be three zones Core

(in black color), Orbital (in dark grey color) and Ether (in grey color).

Page 10: T'12_robotics_Pacman
Page 11: T'12_robotics_Pacman

• The track width for traversing through the arena will be 28 cm.• The thickness of the wall is 5 cm approx.• The dot in the arena refer to coins, these are nothing but led embedded in the track.

Please note: Led are light emitting devices and it might interfere with some class of IR sensors.

Bot Specifications• The bot must fit into a cube of dimensions 250 mm x 250 mm x 250

mm(lxbxh). The bot must not expand beyond these limits at any point of the race. The bot cannot split in more than one part during the race.

• The bot must use only on-board power supply. No external off-board power supply is allowed.

• The max voltage difference between any two points must not exceed 13V.• The bot must be fully autonomous with all powering and motoring mechanisms

self-contained.• Human operators are not permitted to enter any information into the bot during

the event. The bot must not communicate with any wireless device also.• The bot must be started by only one switch. However, a team can have a separate

switch for restart and other switches as required by the strategy.• The bot cannot be constructed using ready-made Lego kits or any ready-made

mechanism. But you can make use of ready-made gear assemblies. Violating this clause will lead to the disqualification of the machine.

Team Specification

• A team may consist of a maximum of 4 members. Students from different educational institutes can form a team.

• A team can register multiple numbers of times but with different robots. (2 robots are said to be different if they are built upon different chassis)

Page 14: T'12_robotics_Pacman

General guidelines• Each team will be allowed a slot of 3 mins to calibrate their robots before a

match/round (not before each run). • At the start of the run, the teams will have to keep the bot in the allotted starting

position.• The same coin cannot be collected twice.• Each team will be given a reporting time as per the schedule on the day of event.

Absence of a team at the specified reporting time would lead to disqualification from event. However we plan to give 3 warning calls in 5 mins intervals before declaring a team “Disqualified”.

• The machines would be checked for their safety before each match and would be disallowed to perform if found unsafe for other participants, spectators or the arena.

• Referee can disallow a robot to continue during a match if he finds that it is damaging the arena.

• Organisers' decision shall be treated as final and binding on all. • The organisers reserve the right to change any or all of the above rules as they deem

fit. Change in rules, if any, will be highlighted on the website and notified to the registered participants.

Page 15: T'12_robotics_Pacman

Disqualification

• Any bot not conforming to the above rules will be instantly disqualified.

• Any bot which damages the arena will be disqualified.
