INTRODUCTION

“Live your life each day as you would climb a mountain. An occasional glance toward the summit keeps the goal in mind,

But many beautiful scenes are to be observed from each new vantage point.

Climb slowly, steadily, enjoying each passing moment; And the view from the summit will serve as a fitting climax for the journey.”

Harold V. Melchert

Dear Student

May I first take the opportunity to welcome you to the Fortitude Academy we do hope your journey withus will be a long and fruitful one. This handbook that you have in your hands is your guide throughoutyour training to take you to black belt and beyond.

I have personally been involved in the martial arts for the past 20 years and in that time I met with, trained with and taught literally thousands of students of all ages. My team and I never tire of teachingand training as we are all constantly learning and enjoying the benefits that martial arts has to offer, and that literally last a lifetime.

Now that you have enrolled in one of our schools you are part of our team, we at Fortitude recogniseall our students and their parents as part of our team and its in great teams that great things arepossible. Nobody has ever got to black belt and beyond just by themselves it has always come as aculmination of different people’s influences and that includes the instructors, parents and fellowstudents. It may seem a daunting task to even contemplate black belt at the level you are right now, Iwill only say that what ever level you are at what ever age or ability we will be there with you every stepof the way.

The syllabus you are studying is a traditional one similar with other ITF schools. However, we changedthe junior syllabus slightly to be more appropriate to the age of our younger students also included isa fantastic character education system, by which as the student progresses so they learn how todevelop themselves mentally and emotionally and how to deal with conflict. I have over the past 17years been involved with personal development and life coaching, I have been able to include ideasand techniques from this area in the study handbook.

All of our instructors, assistants and SWAT members are very approachable and are only too happy tohelp you settle in and progress. I look forward to meeting you personally. I know you will love trainingin the martial arts there is no other activity like it, and remember a black belt is just a white belt whonever quit!

All the very best

TAEKWON-DOTaekwon-Do is an art of self defence founded by a Korean General named Choi HongHi. Taekwon-Do was officially recognised on 11th April 1955 when General Choi afterexhaustive researching, developing, and experimenting, proclaimed Taekwon-Do to theworld as a completely valid and unique martial art having a basic Korean origin.Translated literally ‘Tae’ stands for jumping or flying, to kick or smash with the foot.‘Kwon’ denotes the fist – chiefly to punch or destroy with the hand or fist. ‘Do’ meansan art or way – the right way built and paved by saints and sages of the past.Taekwon-Do is a martial art that has no equal in either power or technique, which hasbeen developed using the principles of modern science. It provides the practitionerwith a fine weapon to defend him or herself. Used wrongly, Taekwon-Do can be alethal weapon. Therefore mental training must always be stressed to prevent the studentfrom misusing it and to promote a strong sense of justice, fortitude, humility andresolve.

FUNDAMENTALS FOR THE BEGINNER STUDENT

It can help to have a coach (parent/guardian, friend) who can say the key words to you as you practice and help to correct the technique.

When learning something new break it down into easy bits, 4-directional punch and block are basically 2 moves that are repeated. Chon-Ji can be broken down into 4 moves that are repeated.

1. Fundamental Walking Stance - Check that your feet are 1 shoulder width wide, and to move forwards or backwards your foot needs to go half way “in then out”. Bend your front leg and straighten your back leg. Weight distribution is 50/50 and length is 1.5 shoulders width long.

2. Fundamental Middle Punch - Aim at the “centre line” with your wrist straight. The punch starts at the hip and travels in a straight line to the target. The twist of the fist is at the very end. Keep your shoulders “full facing” throughout the technique. Pull back with the opposite arm (reaction) at the same speed and distance as the punch.

3. Fundamental Blocks - “Cross your arms” Middle block starts with the blocking arm underneath the other arm (reaction), with back of the hands facing upwards. As a beginner this is the only block to start this way, for the low, high and rising blocks the starting position is with the blocking arm on top of the reaction arm with the back of the hands touching. Make sure you have a twisting action on both the block and the reaction.

4. Fundamental Front Kick - Always use “ball of the foot” unless practicing on a paddle pad. To kick lift your knee and kick forwards pointing your ankle forwards and pulling your toes back, then recoil or snap the kick back. Safety warning never lockout or jar the joints when performing the kicks.

5. Fundamental Pivoting - Whether to perform a side, turning or reverse turning kick, turningin 4 directional punch or block, always use the ball of the foot to pivot never the heel. Before you pivot make sure you have good balance, to get good balance lower your self down a little by bending your knees keeping your back straight.

6. Fundamental Side Kick - This kick can be broken down into 3 parts. “Lift, Turn, Kick” Theposition of the foot is on its side. The standing foot toes are pointing in the opposite direction to the kick.

7. Fundamental Sine Wave Motion - This is the way we develop power in Taekwon-Do and is used with all the techniques (with few exceptions). Beginners first practice this motion insitting stance punch, a more detailed explanation can given by your instructor. Rememberwhen practicing use these key words “down, UP, down”

Special Note - KEEP TRAINING, KEEP SMILING AND I’LL SEE YOU AT THE TOP!

Monthly Tip Testing for Juniors

Purpose: To empower the student to progress by building self-belief, confidence and self-esteem.

We have broken down our syllabus for the Juniors into bite sized chunks. Every 4 weeks they are tested on a piece of the syllabus and on passing receive a tip. Each tip contributes to their evaluationfor grading. This unique system was devised by Mr Hodson in 2001 and has been an essential component to our success with this age group.

Please note tip testing is not a grading and if the student is not successful on the night they can re-test anytime.

Please Note:• This system is unique to the Fortitude Academies.

• Under the instructors guidance an advanced student may be allowed to test for more than 1 stripe.• On achieving Red Tip the student is ready to be considered to grade.

• Basic programme once a week• Black belt programme twice a week

Red Belts & Black TagsRequire 6 colour tip tests before grading

SECOND DEGREE THEORY

TRAINING SECRETS OF TAEKWON-DO

General Choi Hong Hi mentions 9 training secrets of Taekwon-Do in the Taekwon-DoEncyclopedia.

Students should keep in mind the following secrets:

1. To study the theory of power thoroughly.

2. To understand the purpose and meaning of each movement clearly.

3. To bring the movement of eyes, hands, feet and breath into a singlecoordinated action.

4. To choose the appropriate attacking tool for each vital spot.

5. To become familiar with the correct angle and distance for attack and defence.

6. Keep both the arms and legs bent slightly while the movement is in motion.

7. All movements must begin with a backward motion with very fewexceptions.

8. To create a sine wave during the movement by utilising the kneespring properly.

9. To exhale briefly at the moment of each blow except during connecting motion.

3 LINES OF SELF DEFENCE

The 3P Approach for 4 – 8yrs

PREVENT – We prevent a fight from happening by avoidingit. We see it coming and we find a way to stop it before it starts

PREPARE – We use our brain instead of our fists to resolvethis fight. We call upon our verbal skills

PROTECT – We protect ourselves by learning self-defencephysical skills. Knowing them gives us the confidence to notuse them – not unless we must as a last resort

A.R.M Approach

AVOID – We avoid conflict by understanding and being awareof it. When we recognise that a fight or conflict is brewing, andSEE it about to start – we can attempt to do something toprevent it.

RESOLVE – When a conflict has already begun – we have notbeen able to prevent or AVOID it – we can attempt to stop it inits tracks by using non-violent verbal skills

MANAGE – When we cannot AVOID a conflict, and cannot doanything to RESOLVE it, this is the time we may call upon ourphysical skills to humanely stop it

2. CONCENTRATION: Use of a smaller area e.g. fore fiston a vital spot will increase the effect, rather than spreading over a larger area. Also concentrate the larger muscles with each technique will help to increasethe mass and therefore the overall power

3. EQUILIBRIUM: Balance, lower the centre of gravity through proper stances. Keep rear heel down when executing technique.

4. BREATH CONTROL: Breath out sharply at the end ofthe technique whilst tensing the abdomen will help with increasing speed

5. MASS: Use of sine wave helps to increase the body mass when combined with the downward motion aided by gravity.

6. SPEED: This is the most essential factor. Sine wave anddownward motion along with relaxed, flexible, rhythmic movements will help to increase power. Students shouldaim to use acceleration of speed rather than a constant speed when performing the technique, also to use a backward motion before the forward motion is delivered(with a few exceptions)
