THE TRELLEBORG BEARINGSAt the Trelleborg Engineered Systems facility in

Ridderkerk, in the Netherlands, Trelleborg designs

and manufactures engineered rubber products to

seal, damp and protect in demanding environ-

ments worldwide. As well as isolating buildings, its

products are used in bridges, tunnels and harbors

and in the oil and gas industry. Structural anti -

vibration bearings are individually engineered

from laminates of rubber with steel reinforcing

plates. The rubber compound, the number of plates

and the distance between them are all precisely

calculated to meet a particular specification.

CASE [SCUBAPRO]

TRELLEBORG’S SCUBA HOSESThe hoses have a three-layer construction: an

inner tube containing vanilla flavoring, a textile

reinforcement layer and an outer cover. Some

1.5 meters are used within each diving regulator.

The hoses, which are phthalate-free, meet U.S.

FDA requirements and exceed the ISO EN 250

standard for respiratory equipment. They are

micro-pierced to avoid the formation of bubbles.

Trelleborg is Europe’s largest manufacturer of

rubber hoses for use in scuba equipment and the

only company to have a continuous presence in

the industry.

RE Trelleborg’s Viking brand is recog-

nized as a world leader in profes-

sional diving suits, and the

company is also a major global

player within protective suits underthe brand Trellchem. But did you

know that there is a 100-year

history behind the apparel?

Trelleborg started production of

raincoats in 1910 in the Swedish

city that is its namesake. Given the

company’s proximity to the port, it

was a natural step for Trelleborg to

start producing diving suits as well

as splash-protective suits for the

shipping industry. The oldest known

picture of a Trelleborg diving suit

was taken in 1914, a time when the

suits were adapted to various

brands of diving helmets.

Today’s Viking dry suits have set

the standard for durability, protec-

tion and compatibility among divers

in all areas of the diving business.

Viking products include a full range

of accessories from hoods, helmet

yokes and

gloves to

specially made

valves and

underwater

bags.

Scubapro is one of the world’s leading

manufacturers of diving regulators

and buoyancy compensators, as well

as fins, masks and snorkels.

The company was founded in 1963 in

the United States by Gustav dalla Valle

and Dick Bonin.

In 1997 Scubapro merged with Swiss

dive computer manufacturer Uwatec

and became part of Johnson Outdoors.

The combined company Scubapro

Uwatec today employs more than 400

people – of whom more than half are

divers – in 17 locations spread across

13 countries.

HOT SPOT [TIVOLI]

When joining Trelleborg in 2005, Marco

D’Angelo, the Industrial Director of Trelleborg

Wheel Systems, moved to the ancient Italian

 town of Tivoli.

What is the best thing about Tivoli?

“It’s a nice small town offering whatever you may

need and located close to a really fantastic city,

Rome. There you can find many special things that

you can find nowhere else in the world.”

Was there anything about the town that you had to get used to?

“Tivoli has all the characteristics of a small Italian town: Everyone wants

to know everything about everyone. So you don’t really get any privacy,

which can have its advantages and disadvantages.”

What should a first-time visitor to Tivoli know?

“Most people who visit Tivoli spend only one day here to visit the Roman

Emperor Hadrian’s house and the Villa d’Este gardens. My suggestion is to

stay in Tivoli for two or three days, since the city offers many other things

that deserve time to be appreciated.”

How does Tivoli compare with other Italian cities?

“There are more monuments and historical places in Tivoli than in the

average Italian city or town. In fact, Tivoli is listed on UNESCO’s World

Heritage List.”

AND FOOD

Trelleborg’s manufacturing facility in Tivoli

dates from the early 1900s. The Italian

rubber company IAC owned it until 1939,

when the Pirelli Company bought it. In

1978 Pirelli began producing radial tires

for the agricultural industry here; Trelleborg

acquired the business from Pirelli in 1999.

Since then, Trelleborg has invested

substantially in Tivoli to increase its

production capacity. The buildings and

main utilities have been refurbished to

improve the plant’s performance in the

areas of safety, environment and risk

management.

Tivoli is home to Trelleborg Wheel

Systems’ global headquarters, overseas

operations and central R&D department.

On an industrial site covering more than

224,000 square meters, Trelleborg

produces high-quality agricultural and

forestry tires and has about 600

employees.

RESONANCEDAMPERSIt is a common misconception that

resonance dampers, or dynamic

absorbers, are made simply of

rubber. Trelleborg makes three

different types of dampers, and

while they include rubber parts, they

are mostly made of steel.

The dampers are sold under the

brand name Reqill and include

Reqill (for engine mounts and

sub-frames), Inverted Reqill (for

brakes) and Reqill Universal (for

interior applications such as seats

and steering wheels).

ABOUT ELASTOPIPEWith proven advantages over rigid metal or polymer pipe -

work, Trelleborg’s Elastopipe offers a 30-year minimum

maintenance life for fire deluge and sprinkler systems.

Thanks to Elastopipe’s corrosion-free performance, the

frequency of system testing can be reduced with confi -

dence while maintaining full 24/7 availability.

Elastopipe is highly resistant to impact and jet fire

(1400 C̊ for one hour), and its light weight, flexibility and

ease of cutting and fitting ensure that installation is rapid

and simple. Compared with alternative pipework materi-

als, which need replacing at regular intervals as well as

frequent testing and maintenance over a platform’s or

vessel’s lifetime, Elastopipe deluge and sprinkler fire

safety systems offer very low total lifetime costs.

ABOUT THE MAERSK NGUJIMA-YINThe Maersk Ngujima-Yin commenced operations at

Woodside’s Vincent oil field, offshore Western Australia,

in 2008. With a daily production capacity of 120,000 bar-

rels of oil and 100 million standard cubic feet of gas, the

Ngujima-Yin is the largest FPSO in Australian waters and

the largest FPSO in the Maersk fleet.

THE DELUGE SYSTEMA deluge system is a fixed fire-protection system employ-

ing open-type sprinklers attached to a piping system.

Deluge systems are connected to a water supply through

a deluge valve that is opened by a detection system,

installed in the same area as the sprinklers. When the

detection system is activated water discharges through all

of the sprinkler heads in the system. Deluge systems are

used where large quantities of water are needed quickly

to control a fast-developing fire.

PEOPLE & TRENDS [GIORGIO RIZZONI]

OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY Rated the best university in Ohio and home to the second-

largest student body in the United States, the Ohio State

University – or OSU – is best known for its intercollegiate

sports teams, called the Buckeyes. But athletics don’t tell

the whole story about OSU – not by a long shot. Located in

the heart of the state capital, Columbus, on an immense

campus that features an airport, a working farm and even

a wildlife preserve, OSU boasts a cutting-edge hospital

network, public television and radio stations, a supercom-

puter and world-class research centers for satellite com-

munications, polar studies and automotive engineering.

SUPPORTING AUTOMOTIVE DEVELOPMENTTrelleborg is at the forefront of new developments in the automotive industry

and works closely with many universities and research institutions. One focus

for Trelleborg has been the formulation of sealing materials for challenging

biofuel applications and new fuel cell systems. The Group’s advanced polymer

technology contributes to making vehicles lighter. To do this it is looking at

ways in which composites and plastics can replace steel, with innovations

such as plastic pedal assemblies.

more tolerable. Here’s the first:

Life can be a little serious, especially

for engineers, and although most of

our computer time involves a lot of

hard work, we enjoy relaxing with

Sherlock Ohms’ famous investigations

into the most diabolical real-world

cases in engineering.

Sherlock Ohms is the brainchild

of Design News magazine. The blog

invites engineers from all over the

world to contribute real-life engi-neering cases to its growing archive.

Readers are free to comment on the

cases. The cases eliciting the most

comments include “The Unsolved

Case of a Motorcycle’s Reverse

Gear” and our personal favorite,

“The Adventure of the Rebooting

Computers.”

Meanwhile, there’s a great new

app out for engineers with iPhones

who have to use fits and toler-

ances according to the “ISO 286

System of Limits and Fits.” Developed

by Trelleborg, the app is very easy to

use. You enter the nominal diameter

needed and select the tolerance

classes for bore and shaft. The app

then provides the complete ISO fits def-

inition with all relevant values.

That’s all until next time. If you have

any suggestions for online resources or

apps to feature in this column, sendthem to [email protected].

To check out Sherlock Ohms’ investiga-

tions, go to www.designnews.com/blog/

Sherlock_Ohms.

“ISO Fits & Tolerances” is available in

English and German free of charge from

iTunes or via the Apple App Store on the

iPhone and iPod Touch. It can easily be

found by searching for “Trelleborg ISO Fits.”

There is no cure;

you’re just one of

 those inevitable

statistics of the

digital age.

tires. This acquisition strengthens Trelleborg’s

world-leading position in industrial tires through

geographic expansion and an increased after-

market presence.

“The acquisition is a further step in our strategy

to continuously strengthen our positions in

selected segments,” says Maurizio Vischi,

President of Trelleborg Wheel Systems. “The acqui-

sition improves our position and generates oppor-

tunities for future growth. It also creates favorable

potential for synergies, primarily through increased

use of our efficient and modernized plant in Sri

Lanka.

“Watts Tyre Group also adds a geographic pres-

ence that strengthens and complements our existing

business,” Vischi continues. “The operation has sales

to 60 countries and is a leader in many growth mar-

kets. The acquisition creates good conditions for

expansion in growth markets in Asia.”

Trelleborg Wheel Systems also acquired an opera-

tion in Xingtai, in eastern China, to facilitate the

Group’s expansion in the Chinese market for specialty

tires, primarily agricultural tires.
