T-roll – a technology packagesets new standards

Many years of experience in serving the metals rollingindustry and the subsequent in-depth knowledge of the rolling process enabled SMS group to develop anadvanced cold rolling technology package significantlyimproving the production process.

“T-roll” incorporates new physical process models whichare capable of reflecting and simulating the rolling processin an innovative, extensive quality.

T-roll provides a better, fundamental understanding ofthe physical processes in the roll gap and opens com-plete new possibilities for process optimisation, productquality improvements and an increase of plant produc-tivity.

Precise mill and roll gap modelling

T-roll considers and describes the complex interdepend-ence of the mechanical, thermal and tribological aspectsof the rolling process in a new, singular approach.

The online application of T-roll provides complete newpossibilities for the design of the rolling process. Espe-cially when processing new or special materials the opti-mal operating conditions can be calculated and ensured.

Tribological process modelling

The tribological roll gap model is one of the highlights of T-roll. Tribology is a discipline concerned with thefriction, wear and lubrication of counteracting bodies. In conventional roll gap models the friction coefficient isassumed to be constant from roll gap entry to exit andthe dependence from the rolling speed is determinedempirically. In contrast to that the SMS group tribologi-cal model, based on a physical approach, calculates theevolution of the local friction coefficient in the roll gapas a function of various tribologically relevant parame-ters, like, for example, properties of lubricant, rough-ness of strip and roll, mechanical and thermal charac-teristics of pass, etc.

Impressive reference results

The improved performance of an existing reversing cold mill for grain-oriented silicon steel illustrates the impres-sive benefits provided by the T-roll technology.

In combination with the SMS group X-pact process control system, T-roll brought the following advantages:
