Friday, 10/03/14 8:00am - 9:00am

Registration (Richwood Room Entrance)

9:00am-10:30am Organized Chaos: Four Patients & a Medic (Richwood Room) Jason Dush, EMT-P Should rescuers move quickly through victims, or go more slowly, aiming for accuracy? Should they begin treatment, or finish triage? Should they start CPR on a victim in cardiac arrest? The answers to these questions call for a sensible, orderly triage protocol for MCIs.

9:00am-10:30am GEMS: Geriatric Patient Assessment for EMS (Beaulieu Room) Al Benney, EMT-P Over 80% of the calls we make are for geriatric patients. Are we giving these gems the best care we can, or do we say, “it’s just another old person?” This session will highlight the GEMS curriculum and will illustrate care of the geriatric patient.

10:30am - 11:00am Break & Vendor Exhibit Area (Bejou & Detroit Lakes Rooms)

11:00am-12:30pm Size Does Matter: Obesity’s Impact on Pre-hospital Care (Richwood Room) Jason Dush, EMT-P The term bariatric has become common vocabulary—the clinical implication of obesity is clear within literature for in-hospital care, the pre-hospital and ground transport is not. This lecture will take an important look into challenges transport teams face with this population.

11:00am-12:30pm (All Audiences) Stroke Recognition: Subtle Stroke Symptoms (Beaulieu Room) Donna Lindsay, MN, RN, CNS-BC, SCRN 20% of all strokes present with vague and non-specific symptoms, making recognition difficult. This presentation will review subtle symptoms and describe assessment techniques that help elucidate these symptoms. Case studies of subtle stroke symptoms will be included.

12:30pm - 1:15pm Lunch (Mahnomen Ballroom) & Vendor Exhibit Area (Bejou & Detroit Lakes Rooms)

1:15pm-2:45pm Pediatric Trauma Care & Case Studies (Richwood Room) Deb Hanson, RN, Pediatric CCRN This session will focus on highlights and provide an overview of caring for injured children. Recent pediatric trauma case studies highlighting EMS points of interest will be presented.

1:15pm-2:45pm Don’t Go Dyin’ On Me Now! (Beaulieu Room) Al Benney, EMT-P Remember saying: “BSI, Scene Safe” over and over? How many times have you said it on a call? Complacency can kill! When we least expect it, our call can go drastically wrong. This session will explore things that can kill before we even start the primary survey.

2:45pm - 3:15pm Break & Vendor Exhibit Area (Bejou & Detroit Lakes Rooms)

3:15pm-4:45pm Triage & Air Medical Services: Are You Making the Right Decision? (Richwood) Jason Dush, EMT-P The use of air medical helicopters has shown valuable in patient outcomes. There is much debate over the benefits and appropriate use of HEMS. This lecture will look at key issues affecting those decisions and what the debate is all about.

3:15pm-4:45pm Trauma Case Studies: Trauma Care & Outcomes (Beaulieu Room) Dr. Mentor Ahmeti “Interesting” trauma case studies will be reviewed during this session, with an emphasis on unique injuries, lessons learned and current trends in trauma care and resuscitation.

5:00pm-6:00pm A Blast From the Past: EMS From the Past to Present (Mahnomen Ballroom) Jason Dush, EMT-P ~ This lecture will look at the evolution of EMS and where we are headed today. 6:00pm-7:00pm Time to relax! Come join us for a taco bar, refreshments, door prizes and a “Blast From the Past” photo booth! Costumes and props provided—or bring your own vintage EMS clothing!

7:00pm-TBD Stay to listen or dance to music by Plum Craze Entertainment—providing D.J. and karaoke. Take your turn at the photo booth, or just network!

Saturday, 10/04/14 8:00am - 9:00am

Registration (Richwood Room Entrance) & Breakfast (Mahnomen Ballroom)

9:00am-10:30am Battered & Beaten: Uncovering the Invisible Signs of Domestic Abuse (Richwood) Jason Dush, EMT-P Domestic violence is a problem that needs to be stopped sooner than later. This session will help you better prepared to recognize patients suffering from the physical and mental injuries from abuse, documentation, reporting and management during transport.

9:00 am-10:30 am Most Common Pediatric Emergencies (Beaulieu) Dr. Anna DePompolo Join this session to discuss the most common pediatric emergencies and steps to assess and begin treatment in the pre-hospital setting.

10:30am - 11:00am Break & Vendor Exhibit Area (Bejou & Detroit Lakes Rooms)

11:00am-12:30pm The SANE Approach to Trafficking: Medical Tools for Intervention & Response Pam DeWitt-Meza, RN, SANE-A This practical presentation will help medical professionals have the tools they need to be able to offer comprehensive and compassionate care to sexually exploited patients, move beyond initial identification and explore models currently in place for the care of these exploited individuals.

11:00am-12:30pm No More Backboarding—Let the Torture End! (Beaulieu Room) Dr. Keith Wesley All splints should conform to the patient, not the other way around. But that hasn’t stopped us from strapping an S-shaped spine to a flat piece of plywood. Research now indicates that routinely back boarding all trauma patients results in unnecessary pain and potential devastating injuries to our patients.

12:30pm - 1:15pm Lunch (Mahnomen Ballroom) & Vendor Exhibit Area (Bejou & Detroit Lakes Rooms)

1:15pm-2:45pm Man vs. Machine: ATV Trauma Case Studies (Richwood Room) Jason Dush, EMT-P The growing popularity of ATVs and the increasing size and power of these vehicles has led to concern over injury risk. Children make up a disproportionate number of ATV injuries. This lecture will focus on the most commonly seen injuries as well as management of those injuries.

1:15pm-2:45pm Huff n’ Pump: Ya Gotta Have ’Em Both” (Beaulieu Room) Al Benney, EMT-P The greatest majority of our patients call for problems associated with the respiratory and cardiac systems. This session reviews how these systems work together to sustain life. If you don’t have them both, ya got ‘nuthin!

2:45pm - 3:15pm Break & Door Prizes (Bejou & Detroit Lakes Rooms)

3:15pm-4:45pm The Golden Hour: STEMI (Richwood Room) Jason Dush, EMT-P The “Golden Hour” is the brief window of time in which critically injured patients are delivered to definitive care at a trauma facility. The same concept can be applied to the care of certain medical conditions. Delivering ST elevation MIs (STEMIs) to a chest pain center in a timely manner is becoming a standard of care. Rapid assessment & decision making by EMS is imperative.

3:15pm-4:45pm High Performance CPR (Beaulieu Room) Dr. Keith Wesley Recent evaluation of the hemodynamics of CPR have led to the development of new strategies, techniques and technology which hold promise for cardiac arrest victims. Dr. Wesley will examine the ResQPOD, Thumper, Autopulse, Lucas and other new devices designed to improve cardiac arrest survival.

4:45pm Evaluations
