Summer is the season for many of us when we step away from the daily grind and go on vacaon. For some of us that might be a new travel adventure to a faraway place. For others that could be a me to return to a favorite place at the beach or in the mountains. For some, vacaon is an opportunity to speed up with lots of recreaonal acvity. Others relish the opportunity to slow down and just be. I hope you find what you need this summer that will lend itself to your re-creaon and renewal. I thought I would share with you a lile about my plans for the summer. First as part of my two weeks of connuing educaon, I am excited about again parcipang in the Wake Forest Divinity Summer Instute which is held on the campus of Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa. Every year a theologian is brought in as a teacher and this year Dr. William Brown is the featured theologian -in-residence. Dr. Brown, a former professor at Columbia Seminary, is the author of The Seven Pillars of Creaon, one of the most remarkable books I have ever read. In this book Dr. Brown liſts up seven different creaon stories in the Bible and brings those stories into conversaon with recent developments in science and what we now know about the physical universe. Aſter that I travel to Durham for a reunion of people I worked with in Nicaragua in the 1980’s with Witness for Peace. Some 25 of us are gathering from all over the country to renew our friendships, catch up with one another and reflect together on that transformave experience we shared in Central America. I leave directly from there to drive to DC for a connuing educaon event at Wesley Theological Seminary unlike anything I have ever done. It is a seminar on painng icons. I am not a painter but I love the ancient icons of Eastern Orthodox faith that liſt up characters from the Bible or saints from Chrisan history. We shall see how that goes. I am hoping to awaken an arsc side of my personality that has lain dormant for all of my life. Later in the summer I will go back to my family’s cabin in Cedar Mountain, NC for the remainder of my vacaon me in the second half of July. You probably can guess what I will be doing: hiking in the mountains; reading novels; eang and sleeping well; reconnecng with family; sing on the porch and watching birds. All this will I am sure will be nourishing and renewing. And will lead me back to you ready for another good year of ministry together. Hope you get what you need from this season of summer. Thanks. The Committee would like to thank everyone for your cooperation in keeping the kitchen and fellowship hall neat and orderly. We are still finding some old food in the refrigerator. Please remove items when you are done with your function.

July is going to be a busy time around the Church. The parking lot is scheduled to be repaved and both playgrounds will be renovated. Please use caution during this construction and by all means, watch your children and keep them safe.

Should you have any property concerns, please contact Sam Bishop at 336-366-9751 or [email protected] or the church secretary (336-835-4545).

The Men's Breakfast Group will meet Sunday morning, June 26, at 8:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall for breakfast and fellowship. This will be our last monthly meeting until September, and we will not meet again before going on our Annual Men's Retreat in August. Please come and enjoy a light breakfast, good fellowship, and discussion on our upcoming retreat. EPC’s Annual Men’s Retreat has been scheduled for Friday evening, August 19, through noon on Sunday, August 21, at Laurel Ridge Camp, Conference and Retreat Center in nearby Laurel Springs, NC. Our lodging will be in the Tise Lodge, which is the same as last year. Also, the cost remains the same as last year — $120 per person which includes two nights lodging and five meals. Checks can be made payable to “Elkin Presbyterian Church” and marked as “Registration—Men’s Retreat.” The deadline for registration is Monday, August 15. There is a sign-up sheet on the table in the narthex. The Tise Lodge sits on a hillside overlooking beautiful Tise Lake, and accommodates 32 persons. It has 8 bedrooms, each with 2 sets of built-in bunk beds; a fully-equipped kitchen; dining area; a great room/recreation room (with a fireplace); and two bathrooms, each with a laundry closet. WiFi is available. Each person must bring his sleeping bag or bedding for a single bed, pillow, towels, and toiletries including soap. The theme for this year’s retreat is “Courage.” Details of the sermons and discussion points have not been finalized. Mornings and early evenings are devoted to Bible studies and discussions, as well as sharing spiritual experiences and stories. Later in the evenings, we will have music and singing. So to our talented musicians: bring your sheet music and musical instruments! There will be plenty of opportunities for recreation on Saturday afternoon — swimming, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, tubing, hiking and biking. A certified life guard is required for all swimming and boating activities, cost for a life guard is $25/hour. Canoes and kayaks are available for rent at $15 per person. Fishing is catch and release and you may bring your own poles. The camp does not have bikes to rent, but you can bring your own and bike around the property. People who went last year had a great mountain-top experience. If you have not already signed up this year, please do so soon to join us for this wonderful and enriching weekend together.

Memory Verse for the Week: I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (Psalm 139:14)

This week, our children will be learning about how Jesus sees us, has a plan for us, cares for us and loves us -- just as we are. All of us are unique and have something special to give.

The children will be hearing the stories of Jesus with Zacchaeus, the woman at the well, Nicodemus,

the blind man and the children.

And they'll be playing games, getting outside and building Legos with their teammates.

All children, rising pre-K through 6th, are welcome to join our team this year.

"Everything is awesome when you're part of a team!" (The Lego Movie)
