TLH Makes U.S. News and World
Report’s List of Nation’s Best High
Schools
T.L. Hanna High School in Anderson, SC, is listed among the best high schools in
the state and nation according to U.S. News and World Report. The magazine
released its ranking of the top U.S. high schools two weeks ago. Schools were
ranked according to enrollment, location, state assessment proficiency tests and
Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate tests. Using that
information, the magazine gave each school a college readiness index score and
ranked the schools. The rankings were also broken down on a state level.
“Students and parents know how important it is to be well prepared for
college,” said Brian Kelly, editor and chief content officer of U.S. News and
World Report. “The 2012 U.S. News and World Report Best High Schools
rankings will help identify which public schools, both nationally and statewide,
will best prepare a student to excel at the collegiate level.”
Principal Sheila Hilton said, “We are thrilled to have appeared in this ranking. I
give all the credit to wonderful teachers who maintain a focus on instruction and
rigor; student who work hard during their high school years; and extremely
supportive parents and community.” Betty Bagley, superintendent for District 5,
said she wasn’t surprised by the news. “I’m very thrilled for them,” Bagley said.
“They work hard and keep their focus on instruction. I’m not at all surprised, but
I’m happy to see them get this recognition.”
Saying Good-By to the Class of 2012
Walking Away
By C. Day Lewis
It is eighteen years ago, almost to the day –
A sunny day with leaves just turning,
The touch-lines new-ruled – since I watched you play
Your first game of football, then, like a satellite
Wrenched from its orbit, go drifting away
Behind a scatter of boys. I can see
You walking away from me towards the school
With the pathos of a half-fledged thing set free
Into a wilderness, the gait of one
Who finds no path where the path should be.
That hesitant figure, eddying away
Like a winged seed loosened from its parent stem,
Has something I never quite grasp to convey
About nature’s give-and-take – the small, the scorching
Ordeals which fire one’s irresolute clay.
I have had worse partings, but none that so
Gnaws at my mind still. Perhaps it is roughly
Saying what God alone could perfectly show –
How selfhood begins with a walking away,
And love is proved in the letting go.
And a Word from Dr. Seuss…
Congratulations! Today is your day.
You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away!
You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own.
And you know what you know. You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.
—"Oh, the Places You'll Go!"
