A Welcoming Community: You enter this Church … not as stranger, but as a guest of God. He is your heavenly Father. Come, then, with joy in your heart and thanks on your lips into His presence, offering Him your love and service. Be grateful to the strong and loyal ones who, in the name of Jesus Christ, built this place of worship, and to all who have beautified it and hallowed it with their prayers and praise. Ask His blessing on those who love His house of faith as the inspiration of their labor, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit, and may that blessing rest on you, both in your going out and your coming in.

Parish Registration: You must be a registered member of The Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish to receive Baptism, Confirmation, First Penance, First Holy Communion, Marriage and to receive sponsor letters from the pastor.

New Members: Please stop by or call the parish office and register. (If you are leaving the parish, please notify the office before you leave). Thank you.

Change of Address: Please notify the parish office as soon as possible if you have had a change of address.

Inactive Catholics: As a welcoming parish, we ask every parishioner to ask God to put in your heart people whose hearts we need to reach out and touch with God’s love. “Before you talk to men about God, you talk to God about men.” Please, call, write, leave in an envelope in the collection the name, address and phone number of the person. Father would be delighted to meet with them.

SACRAMENTAL LIFE

RCIA: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process to bring non-Catholics into the faith. Anyone seeking information or interested in becoming a part of this community of faith can call the parish office.

Sacrament of Baptism: Baptisms are scheduled for the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month following the 9:30 AM Mass. In order to understand and better appreciate this special sacrament, parents are required to attend the Pre-Baptismal Program, which is held on the last Saturday of each month at 7:00 PM in St. Basil’s Rectory. Please contact the rectory to schedule your child’s baptism.

Sacrament of Marriage: Couples contemplating marriage should notify the rectory at least six months prior to the date to allow necessary time for proper preparation.

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick: Urgent calls will be attended to at any time of the day or night.

Visitation of the Sick: Please call the parish for visitation of the sick at home, in the hospital, or health care facility.

Parish Mission Statement: We, the Catholic faithful of The Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, in union with our Holy Father, the Pope, and our Bishop, are called through Baptism to share in the ministry which Jesus Christ has entrusted to the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. As priest and lay faithful in a rural area, we utilize our energy to serve the spiritual needs of the Kingdom of God to promote a culture of life, justice, and peace to this generation and the generations that follow us.

Prayer to the Immaculate Heart of Mary O Immaculate Heart of Mary, Heavenly beauty and splendor of the Father, you are the most valued Heavenly

treasure. New Eve, immaculate in soul, spirit and body, created of the godly seed by the Spirit of God, you are the

spiritual Mother of mankind. Pure Virgin, full of grace then and now, your whole being was raised Heavenly in full glory, to be elevated

above all the hosts within the Kingdom of God. O Heavenly Mother, Queen of Heaven and earth, I recognize the glory of your highest title, the Immaculate

Heart of Mary! Loving Mother, dispenser of endless blessings, you who continually intercede on our behalf,

please present my need before your loving Son, Jesus. (Mention your request)

O Immaculate Heart of Mary, I know that you are now presenting my need before Jesus, for you have never turned away those in dire need.

Mother dearest, I await your favorable answer, submitting myself to the Divine will of the Lord, for all glories are His for ever and ever. Amen.

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Sunday, January 17th, 2016 Sunday Readings

First Reading: Isaiah 62:1-5 Isaiah prophesizes that Jerusalem will again be held in high esteem by God. He states that all nations will witness its glory. He compares a groom’s joy toward his bride to the joy that God will feel toward Jerusalem.

Responsorial Psalm: 21

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 Paul discusses the different gifts and talents bestowed upon different individuals. He explains that each individual receives various talents so that everyone can contribute something to society.

Gospel: John 2:1-11 Jesus and Mary attended a wedding where Mary informed Jesus that there was no more wine. At first he said it did not concern him, but then he turned several jugs of water into wine. His disciples were also present and believed in him more strongly after they witnessed the first sign of glory he revealed to them.

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time “There are different gifts but the same Spirit; there are different ministries but the same Lord; there are different works but the same God who accomplishes all of them in everyone. To each person the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”

As members of a vibrant church community it is easy to recognize the giftedness of so many people. Our worship comes alive through the commitment of readers, musicians. Our education efforts for adults and children reflect the firm faith of others, ready to transmit what they believe. The outreach to those in need continues to be an expression of Christ’s love for others, through the pantry or hospital visits. The person who welcomed you at the door of the church made you feel welcome...

May we pause for a moment and look around. What still needs to be accomplished to build His kingdom here? Maybe it’s something that has never been tried before, but it can answer a great need. Do we know where someone can get a job? Is there someone who needs a visit and a prayer? Is a visit to a terminally ill person possible, so a caregiver can have a respite or get to the store?

May we pause for a moment and look inside. Quietly look at your hands. What gift do you see that you have that can touch the life of someone else? Pope emeritus Benedict XVI certainly spoke about our ability to serve the common good. Maybe your gift is the only thing someone needs to change his or her life. Use it.

As an example look at what happened at Cana. Mary’s last words in the bible ‘do whatever he tells you’ certainly helped the new family and strengthened

From a Letter to the Ephesians by Saint Ignatius of Antioch, bishop and martyr

The harmony of unity It is right for you to give glory in every way to Jesus Christ who has given glory to you; you must be made holy in all things by being united in perfect obedience, in submission to the bishop and the presbyters. I am not giving you orders as if I were a person of importance. Even if I am a prisoner for the name of Christ, I am not yet made perfect in Jesus Christ. I am now beginning to be a disciple and I am speaking to you as my fellow disciple. It is you who should be strengthening me by your faith, your encouragement, your patience, your serenity. But since love will not allow me to be silent about you, I am taking the opportunity to urge you to be united in conformity with the mind of God. For Jesus Christ, our life, without whom we cannot live, is the mind of the Father, just as the bishops, appointed over the whole earth, are in conformity with the mind of Jesus Christ. It is fitting, therefore, that you should be in agreement with the mind of the bishop as in fact you are. Your excellent presbyters, who are a credit to God, are as suited to the bishop as strings to a harp. So in your harmony of mind and heart the song you sing is Jesus Christ. Every one of you should form a choir, so that, in harmony of sound through harmony of hearts, and in unity taking the note from God, you may sing with one voice through Jesus Christ to the Father. If you do this, he will listen to you and see from your good works that you are members of his Son. It is then an advantage to you to live in perfect unity, so that at all times you may share in God. If in a short space of time I have become so close a friend of your bishop – in a friendship not based on nature but on spiritual grounds – how much more blessed do I judge you to be, for you are as united with him as the Church is to Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ to the Father, so that all things are in harmony through unity. Let no one make any mistake: unless a person is within the sanctuary, he is deprived of God’s bread. For if the prayer of one or two has such power, how much more has the prayer of the bishop and the whole Church.

Reflecng on the Gospel

Belief is directed to a Who rather than a what.

Our own encounters with Jesus in prayer, through

others, (in struggling with daily self-giving) are truly

epiphanies of God’s glory which also invite us to respond

to abundance with belief. These epiphany signs might

come in may ways—through others in a cry for help, in a

lonely person’s plea for companionship, in the

spontaneous laughter of delight, in the beauty of nature.

The challenge for us is to see these as revela>ons of

God’s glory, as epiphanies of God’s love for us, and an

opportunity to respond in belief.

Yes, these common, ordinary signs of God’s

abundance, love, and glory are all around us. By

responding to other persons (recognizing them as

revela>ons of God to us) we ourselves also become signs

of God’s abundance, God’s fullness. We ourselves are

the good wine kept un>l a?er Jesus’s ascension when

we take up Jesus’s mission as disciples. Living the

paschal mystery means that we empty ourselves in

order to be filled with the goodness of God’s glory.

Catholic Campaign for Human

Development The annual national collection for the

Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) supports our brothers and sisters in need by bringing them new hope,

building community, and addressing the root causes of poverty.

The collection will be taken up in parishes in the Diocese of Scranton on the

weekend of January 30-31, 2016. The theme, "Working on the Margins," focuses our attention on the poor and vulnerable who can often be overlooked as we go

about our daily lives. "In this Jubilee Year of Mercy

proclaimed by Pope Francis, we are reminded that all of us are welcome to

encounter Christ through God's grace. No one is excluded from the mercy and love of God."

Bishop Bambera noted that Pope Francis has urged us to "Go and seek out and

encounter the most needy!" Supporting the Catholic Campaign for Human Development enables us to answer this call.

"We are incomplete until we encounter

the love of God and then learn to freely give this love away to all whom God has placed within our lives," the Bishop said. "Our mission as disciples of Jesus will be

fulfilled if we engage the journey of faith honestly, if we acknowledge our need for God's merciful presence in our lives, and if we are humble and generous enough to

encounter and serve one another along the way."
