Talk 1

DID YOU RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT WHEN YOU BELIEVED?

And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions,

came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”So they said to him, “We

have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”3 And he said to them, “Into what

then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.”4 Then Paul said, “John indeed

baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who

would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”5 When they heard this, they were

baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with

tongues and prophesied. Acts 19:1-5

The text says, The text says, “when they “when they heard this, they were heard this, they were

baptized in the name of the baptized in the name of the Lord” (vs. 5) Lord” (vs. 5)

They said, They said, “No, we have “No, we have not even heard whether not even heard whether

Paul said, Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who

was coming after him, that is, in Jesus” (vs.4) was coming after him, that is, in Jesus” (vs.4)

APOLLOS24 Now a certain Jew named Apollos, born at

Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25 This man had been instructed in the way of the

Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord,

though he knew only the baptism of John. 26 So he began to speak boldly in the

synagogue. .... and when he arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace;

28 for he vigorously refuted the Jews publicly, showing from the Scriptures that

Jesus is the Christ.Acts 18:24-28

NATURAL MAN AND SPIRITUAL MAN

13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the

Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of

God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually

discerned. 15 But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is

rightly judged by no one. 16 For “who has known the mind of the LORD that he

may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.1 Cor 2:13-16

CARNAL MAN

And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 2 I fed you

with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; 3 for you are still carnal. For where

there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and

behaving like mere men? 4 For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you

not carnal?1 Cor 3:1-4

PETER & GREAT THURSDAY

8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” 9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”

Eucharist 73 And a little later those who stood by came

up and said to Peter, “Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you.” 74 Then he began to curse and swear, saying, “I do not know the Man!” Matt 26:73,74

JOHN AND PETER ON THE RESURRECTION SUNDAY

Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen

cloths lying there, 7 and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw

and believed. Jn 20:6-9  Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were

shut where the disciples were assembled,[c] for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to

them, “Peace be with you”. Jn 20:19

PETER AND OTHER DISCIPLES DURING THE FORTY DAYS

Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We are going with you

also.” They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught

nothing. 4 But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the

shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jn 21:3,4

THE DISCIPLES AND THE ASCENSION

Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, acts 1:9,10

12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. 13 And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James.

ST STEPHEN 54 When they heard these things they were cut to the

heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth. 55 But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, 56 and said, “Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”

57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord; 58 and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses

laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 And they stoned Stephen as he was

calling on God and saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 Then he knelt

down and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not charge them with this sin.” And when he had said this, he

fell asleep.

THE GREAT OWNERSHIP

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all

truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things

to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and

declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and

declare it to you. Jn 16:13-15

ST. CYRIL OF JERUSALEM

When we were baptized into Christ and clothed ourselves in him, we were

transformed into the likeness of the Son of God. Having destined us

to be his adopted sons, God gave us a likeness to Christ in his glory, and living as we do in communion with Christ, God’s anointed, we ourselves

are rightly called “the anointed ones”. When he said: Do not touch my anointed ones, God was speaking of us.

THE GREAT FELLOWSHIP That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our

eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life 2 the life was manifested, and we

have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the

Father and was manifested to us 3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us;

and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.

4 And these things we write to you that your joy may be full. Jn 1:1-4
