Miracle High

School

The Preuss School has

been named the nation’s

top “Miracle High School”

by Newsweek maga-

zine. Preuss was given the

No. 1 spot among what the

magazine calls

“Transformative Schools.”

This award is a tribute to

our students and their par-

ents for their commitment

to our mission. It is also a

great honor for our Won-

derful faculty and staff.

During the school year, many students participated in Enrichment Programs and this summer more than 100 students participate in Enrichment and Internship Programs with UC San Diego and our community partners. These students worked with engineers, doctors, scientists, professors and teachers from UC San Diego, UC San Diego Cancer Center, The Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute and many other local organizations. We are always looking for more opportunities for our students to gain experience in the workplace. Please contact me if you would like to learn how you can become more involved with our School.

We continue to use the San Diego Uni-fied School District (SDUSD) to trans-port our students. There were changes in the pick-up and drop-off schedule and some students were moved to dif-ferent buses. We have tried to accom-modate students with the most suit-able bus stop. Mrs. Villanueva, our Transportation Coordinator, has worked closely with SDUSD transporta-tion to make the appropriate adjust-ments to the bus stops. Implementing bus changes can take up to one month. Please understand that we are doing our best to accommodate all families. If you have questions, please phone Mrs. Villanueva t 858-658-7412.

I encourage all of our parents to become involved in the school. Join the PTA. Support classroom and school-wide activities. The Saturday PTA General Meetings are a great way to learn about what is happening at Preuss, and it is a great time to get to know other parents. Each meeting includes a Principal’s Re-port, and a featured speaker will share information regarding school programs. Translation in Spanish is provided. You will also fulfill your Service Hours by attending the PTA General Meetings. The next General Meeting will take place on Satur-day, October 22, 2011, and I look forward to seeing you there.

BECOME INVOLVED IN THE SCHOOL – JOINT THE PTA

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT

Back to School Night was held on Septem-ber 15, and it was attended by 415 parents. The parents had the opportunity to attend their child’s classes and meet their teach-ers. The faculty and staff were introduced in a brief meeting before the classroom visits. It was a night of learning for parents.

I encourage all parents new to The Preuss School to attend the New Parent Academy sessions which will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 6-8pm, Saturday, October 22, 9:30am-12:30pm and Wednesday, October 26, 6-8pm. You will be meeting the Advisory, Administrative and Student Support Services staff. You will also learn about The Preuss School curriculum and available resources, ways to help your student succeed at Preuss, school services and procedures, hear from a panel of current parents and students about how to be involved and feel a part of the Preuss community and receive answers to any questions you may have. You will also receive service hours for each session you attend and recognition for attending all three sessions.

TRANSPORTATION SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

Students need to be at Preuss every day and should only be absent if they are sick and/or contagious. Christine Richter is our school nurse and she can provide the information you need on whether your child is well enough to attend school. When students miss school, they miss out on valuable lessons, and the school loses money when stu-dents are absent. Please do not plan vacation days when Preuss is in session. Thank you for ensuring your child attends school every day. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school. Please contact your child’s teacher if your questions are about the classes or curriculum. Your child’s University Prep teacher is also a valuable asset and can answer questions or assist you in getting the appropriate information. You can contact the school by phone, Schoolnotes.com or the Preuss website (preuss.ucsd.edu) to get e-mail addresses of our teachers. Schoolnotes.com is a valuable re-source as you can check to see the assignments for each class. I look forward to another successful school year. Scott Barton

Dear Preuss Parents:

Welcome to the 2011-

2012 school year. The key

to the success of your stu-

monthly Saturday Parent

to get involved and join

We fundraise throughout

Encourage your kids

to attend school every

single day

Missing a day at

Preuss is like missing

a week at many

schools.

Homework

Help you son or daughter to pack up their

backpack after homework is completed.

This will help them to stay organized, and

reduce the stress of trying hurry out the

door on time in the morning.

Attendance

Our students do not benefit from the out-

standing lessons of our teachers if they are

not here. It has been said that missing a

day at Preuss is like missing a week at

many schools. Be aware of the unique

school calendar at Preuss. Do not plan any

family trips, or other activities, during the

school year. Try to schedule appointments

on Friday mornings, and get the students

here as soon as possible in the morning. If

your child is absent, call the Attendance

Office at (858)658-7412. California law

requires that the parent notify of the school

in a timely fashion.

Transportation

Be sure to have your students at their as-

signed bus stop 10 minutes before the

scheduled arrival time. Students may only

ride their assigned bus, and may only utilize

their assigned stop.

School Uniforms

School uniforms have been identified as a

key factor in promoting safety, and an aca-

demic focus in schools. A recent poll of par-

ents showed that parents at The Preuss

School support the dress code. Uniform

clothes can be purchased from our supplier,

True Grits.http://www.truegrits.com.

Hooded sweatshirts can be purchased from

The Preuss School PTA, and all proceeds go

back to our school to fund important pro-

grams. In addition, the uniforms for Physi-

cal Education classes can be purchased

from the PTA.

cial welcome to our new students. We are also pleased

Preliminary SAT Testing at Preuss

Most colleges in the nation rely on standardized testing to determine a

student’s readiness for college level studies. The most commonly used

standardized exams are the SAT and the ACT. Each year Preuss students

take a practice exam to help prepare them for taking these standardized

college admission tests during their junior and senior years.

This year, all 8th-11th graders will take the PSAT and all 8th-10th graders

will take the ReadiStep Test, which is a Practice PSAT. Students will be

tested in the areas of English, math, reading, and writing . Students will be

able to see how they score in more specific sub-areas once they receive

their score report. These test will given free of charge to our students.

The PSAT will be administered on Wednesday, October 12th during

a morning advisory testing block. The ReadiStep will be adminis-

tered at a later date during a morning advisory testing block.

Academic Supports There are many services at Preuss to support your child’s academic progress and achievement such as: SEA,

After School Tutoring, UCSD Tutors in the Classroom, Learning Specialist, Counselors, & Advisory Teachers.

Important Note: Students who wish to stay after school for tutoring must make arrangements with teacher and

parents ahead of time. Students must sign up in advance (no later than lunch on that day) to reserve their spot in

a classroom for tutoring or they will not be allowed to stay afterschool.

Welcome back students and parents. Thank you for

all your support in helping our students become

successful. Back to school time is especially impor-

tant to be excited about your child’s learning and to

stay involved. Spend time with your children, be

your child’s teacher at home. Monitor their home-

work and assignments. Enrich their learning by be-

ing enthusiastic and interested about their classes.

(it’s contagious!). We all should be lifelong learners!

A big thank you to all the parents and students for getting your Tdap shots completed! It’s so important to keep our students safe through prevention of ill-ness. Some back to school checklists to keep in mind include: *Enroll your child in a health insurance program.

Health insurance can help you afford routine and

emergency care your child will need to stay healthy.

Call SD-Khan at 1-800-675-2229 for affordable

Medical and Dental Coverage for your children.

*Make sure your child gets their needed yearly

physical. Health needs can be addressed along with

preventive measures such as required and

recommended immunizations at the doctor visit. You can learn about shot requirements at www.shotsforschool.org . If you need help contact your public health department or your CHDP office at 1-800-675-2229. (the CHDP program provides free health assessments and immunizations for low-income children). Contact the school nurse for fur-ther questions and ALLWAYS update the nurse with your child’s updated immunizations and up to date health information. If your child has asthma, please be sure an asthma action plan and medication are on file each school year. If your child needs medica-tion at school, a doctor’s order is required AND the medication needs to be kept at the nurse’s office. Yearly flu shots are recommended to help prevent the flu. Also very important for health are: adequate sleep, good nutrition and exercise. *Schedule dental and vision appointments. Dental health and ability to see well is tremendously impor-tant in your child’s learning. It is recommended that children see a dentist every 6 months. Please con-tinue to practice positive oral care habits. Thank you! Christine Richter RN, school nurse

What is PTA? Why join PTA? The number one reason to join the Parent Teacher Association is to benefit your child. In doing so, you also help your school. But there are many more PTA advantages:

Get Connected. There’s no better way to know what’s happening in your school. Discover Great Resources. The PTA offers a variety of programs designed for parents as well as students. Tap into a Network. PTA functions are opportunities to meet other parents and teachers, building rapport and discussing issues that are on your mind. You can share ideas, concerns, and experiences. Watch Yourself Grow. By volunteering with your PTA, you put your skills and hobbies to use for a noble cause—your child and all children in the community. Speak Up. PTA can be a way for you to more effec-tively suggest change at your child’s school. Witness Improvement. By getting involved at your child’s school you’ll be part of the solution, helping make positive changes. Local PTAs play an important role in fundraising to provide building improvements, curriculum-based programs, and social events Be a Role Model. By becoming a PTA member, you’ll be demonstrating to your child the importance you place on education. For $10.00 a year, you can become a PTA member, joining people who share your interest in issues affect-ing children. You can purchase your membership at the school Office or with any Preuss PTA member.

Why Join the Preuss PTA You’re invited to the Lego

League Tournament!

Parents, "Lego League" season is beginning, where your middle school student can learn about building/programming

robots and teamwork! Students from the high school robotics team are the coaches and mentors.

The season finishes with a big tournament held at Preuss on Saturday, November 12th—8:00am-5:00pm. We could use some parent volunteers to help run the event (setup, general

supervision, snack sales, referee and presentation judge etc). You can earn volunteer hours! If you are interested,

please contact coach Dan Rupert, [email protected] or

leave a message at school. Thank You!
