Hello from Milwaukee!

First of all thank you. We are grateful for your prayers, encouragement, and financial support!

We've been riding in vans for many long hours, showering in the afternoon at the local rec center, and sleeping

on air mattresses in a church without air conditioning. This has jolted us out of our usual routine a profound

ways. Traveling with folks always creates a new sense of community. The shared experiences and being

together 24/7 have shed light on the amazing high school youth of our congregation. Leaders and youth from

other congregations have commented on the strength of relationships among our group, and the willingness

to step out of the usual comfort zone in loving service to others in the name of Jesus. Youth have eagerly

volunteered to lead prayer in our large group sessions, as well as sing, read scripture and play instruments

during Wednesday worship.

I didn’t simply want to share my insights so I asked our youth to offer their reflections from the trip thus far.

The following discussion happened Wednesday evening during our youth group time just before lights out.

What's been theWhat's been theWhat's been theWhat's been the funniest moment so far?funniest moment so far?funniest moment so far?funniest moment so far? - I was in a nursing home, and every door had 'M' posted on the name plaque. So, I knocked on the door and asked,

"M would you like to join us for activities today." I wondered why they were all named M until I realized that stood

for Mr. or Mrs.

- One woman asked me to read the bible with her at a soup kitchen her mother owns/runs. She asked me if I knew

the story of the Prodigal Son. Then she had me read the bible, and had me stop frequently to comment on the

verses for like an hour.

- Rachel walked up to Kennedy, and belched like the biggest belch ever. Then she turned to a stranger with a smile

on her face and said, "Hi, I'm Rachel."

- One older lady was cruising down the hallway farting the whole way, and she didn't say a word about it.

What have been your most meaningful 5 minutes? What have been your most meaningful 5 minutes? What have been your most meaningful 5 minutes? What have been your most meaningful 5 minutes? - The way our group has connected, but that's been more than 5 minutes :)

- Talking with Mr. D. just keeping him company.

- Spending all this time with little, mentally disabled babies holding and cuddling them.

- Worshipping Sunday at All People's Church (ELCA) was awesome, especially the Altar Call (yes, some Lutherans do

this) and singing together after worship.

- 3 of us were in a little old lady's room. She woke up in her husband's robe who had died. She talked about an

article she read, and we realized she was talking about Heaven is for Real. She said her husband was still caring

for her, sending angels to care for her. We all walked out crying happy tears and hugging. God was in there. We

bought her a copy of Heaven is for Real, and we're taking it to her tomorrow.

- We were at Arts and Crafts with a mute man. He smiled the whole time.

- I was playing Connect 4 with a disabled lady. I let her win, and she talked about it for the rest of the time we were

there.

Thoughts on the trip as a whole...Thoughts on the trip as a whole...Thoughts on the trip as a whole...Thoughts on the trip as a whole... - It's been life changing and eye opening.

- If you're having a bad day you don't realize what you have. There is always

something to smile about.

- We all need to get more involved in our community.

- Isn't there a soup kitchen in Watertown?

- I'm going to volunteer more.

- During the trip I've been learning to be comfortable with being

uncomfortable.

Is there anything else you want to share with the folks back home?Is there anything else you want to share with the folks back home?Is there anything else you want to share with the folks back home?Is there anything else you want to share with the folks back home? - Serving isn't just doing, sometimes it is listening. - Don't be afraid to try and serve. It seems scary at first, but it's amazing

what you can do by trying.

God's peace,

Pastor Chris

Lutheran Campus Ministry

AAAA ministryministryministryministry totototo youngyoungyoungyoung adultsadultsadultsadults onononon campuses.campuses.campuses.campuses. Campus Ministry is both faithful to a rich theological tradition and driven by the challenges of the contemporary university.

Drawing on the Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions, Campus Ministry bears witness to God’s amazing grace within the context of higher education. Sensitive to the pastoral needs of those on campus and engaged in the intellectual discourse of the university, Campus Ministry strives to communicate the Gospel in fresh ways.

Through worship, study, fellowship, and service, members of the academic community taste the fullness of God’s grace. As expansive as Christ’s love, Campus Ministry reaches out to all who teach and learn, inviting them to experience the challenge of following Jesus on the Way.

The South Dakota Synod has campus ministries on five campuses in South Dakota:

Northern State University [Lutheran Campus Ministry] South Dakota State University [University Lutheran Center] School of Mines & Technology [Lutheran Campus Ministry] Black Hills State University [Lutheran Campus Ministry, BHSU] University of South Dakota [The Luther Center]

Lutheran Campus Ministry is our Mission of the Month for August. If you wish to help support this mission your offerings are to be over and above your regular giving.

“God’s Work. Our Hands.” Sunday

September 7, 2014 With the ELCA theme of “God’s Work. Our Hands”, member of Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer can join thousands of other ELCA members serving in communities throughout the country. The idea is as the title says – doing God’s work by serving God’s people in our community.

The idea is to do a variety of serving projects throughout Watertown. You and your family or friends can pick your own service project or you can join a project organized through the church. We will gather back at the church from our completed projects at about 5:30 pm for a picnic supper of brats and chips. There will be no charge for the meal and the first 100 people to sign up for the “God’s Work. Our Hands” project will receive a t-shirt.

Here are some ideas for service projects:

• Road Ditch Clean-up

• Making bars at the church for the Salvation Army

• Paint a fence at Flatiron Park

• Produce a DVD and deliver it to LCOOR members at nursing homes and assisted living centers.

• Yard clean up for a shut-in

• What ideas do you have for a service project???

Watch for more details, as we get closer to the date. Recruit your family and friends to join the serving Sunday, doing God’s work with our very own hands!

Worship can take many forms. This is beautifully evident during the summer months as

Memorial Park fills with lawn chairs and becomes a gathering place each Sunday morning –

rain or shine.

While there is something comforting about being in one’s home sanctuary, sometimes being

removed from our usual setting causes us to hear an entirely new message.

“For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

– Matthew 18:20.

Our travels may have allowed us to visit churches of family and friends this summer. A few

brave Lutheran souls may have even ventured into a church where they didn’t know

anybody!

Community church services have also been held under huge tents and around picnic tables

in city parks around the region as residents gathered to celebrate their particular

community’s festivals – from Harvest Fest to Honey Days. Could there be a better way to

conclude a weekend’s events than spending time in Christian fellowship?

While gathering with others is desirable in our worship life, sometimes we also receive

meaningful messages when we are alone. This happened to me during a recent morning

walk. I had almost finished my usual uptown route, but decided to go one more block. As I

turned the corner, I saw a pair of windows in an old brick building peering directly at me. At

this point, my head filled with a song from my younger days:

“Look out your window, see what you can see. Silence is broken by opening your door. Look

out your window, see if you can see all the wonders of life you’ve never seen before.”

Just by walking the one extra block, I found a message that continues to inspire me to look

for “wonders of life. “

As the summer draws to a close and we ease back into our usual time slots and familiar pew

spots, we are blessed to have the many talents of our own worship team. Our togetherness

makes us feel at home again. Come, now is the time to worship.

I’m including this month’s recipe from The LCOOR Cookbook, simply because it sounds like a

“wonder of life.”

Heath Cake by Marilyn Mahanke

1 pkg French vanilla or white cake mix with pudding

1 pkg Heath English toffee milk chocolate bits

8 oz Cool Whip

Mix cake mix. Follow directions. Add ½ package of Heath chips. Stir into cake. Pour into

greased 9x13 cake pan. Bake at 350 for 28 to 33 minutes. Cool. Frost with 8 oz Cool Whip.

Sprinkle with rest of Heath bits on top. Keep in refrigerator.
