The Rising

The earth trembles and moves. Light cracks the darkness. A sound like rushing wind

tears around the edges of time.

Light centers to a single flame rising out of death’s deep pool.

Living waters bubble up to overflow the rim of earth.

The wind takes on the wail of birthing and labors forth into eternity

a new creation.

God’s newly born – our resurrection hope fulfilled –

we rise up laughing in the Alleluia Dawn!

EASTER BLESSINGS

Alleluia! Happy Easter! Jesus is Risen Today! Alleluia!

I am glad you have to come to celebrate Easter today! As Christians this is a major celebration! Jesus is risen from the dead.

So we celebrate with lots of sacraments this Easter season. During lent, a time of prayer, fasting and alms giving, we normally do not do baptisms, and weddings. So to start with, we have lots of baptisms to catch up on and some spring weddings in the planning stages. Additionally we will celebrate 1st Communion for our 100+ elementary school students in the next month and Confirmation for about 70 of our high school students. This is a great way to celebrate the Pentecost spirit of life in the parish.

The Easter season is for all of us. It is an opportunity to rejoice on the changes made in Lent. On Ash Wednesday we were challenged to grow especially in prayer. Maybe you used the black book or the "Give Us This Day" book. Our hope is that you continue this change to your prayer life in this Easter season and beyond.

As we share the Good News of the Resurrection and move from Lent to Easter we begin to see our lives in a new way. We look for opportunities to continue to deepen our spirituality. Here are some Easter and summer options for further growth…

Continue to carve out a time and place in your life for daily prayer. With spring hopefully coming you can find a place in the sun room of your life to be with God 10 minutes a day. If you liked the "Give Us This Day", get a subscription and use it daily in your prayer.

Follow the example of our new Pope Francis, and continue to give to those in need through donations to Bella Clinic, Fr. Carr's Place 2B, the Day by Day Warming Shelter, food donations to the Oshkosh Food Pantry and clothing and furniture donations to St. Vincent de Paul and many other good outreach organizations.

Make a commitment to yourself and your family that regardless of where you go for the weekend, here or away, going to Mass will be a part of your travel plans.

Read a good spiritual book. You might check our parish library for other reading options or go to the local Catholic bookstore, "On this Rock", at the old St. Vincent Church, 216 South Park Ave., where the staff will be happy to help you find reading material that might interest you.

For the children, watch for Vacation Bible School (VBS) coming to St. Raphael again this summer. Another thought – many children go to camp for sports; why not check out a camp for our faith? One option is Camp Tekawitha. Go to www.gbdioc.org and click on the link to Camp Tekawitha.

For teens there are several summer trips coming up. Information can be found on Facebook at "Life Teen Oshkosh" or in our weekly bulletin.

Adults – you might want to consider joining a Small Christian Community (SCC). It’s a great opportunity to gather with parishioners for study, fellowship and faith sharing. If there isn't one that meets your time and interest, start one, we can help with materials.

We must not let Easter bring to an end the spiritual growth we’ve begun during Lent. Instead, we pray that all may enjoy new life in Christ as we rise with Him to new and greater holiness.

Happy Feast of the Resurrection! Happy Easter!! Alleluia!!!

Fr. Doug Fr. Luke

PS: Thank you to the many great volunteers that have helped with our Lent and Easter liturgical celebrations as well as the many folks that helped with the Fish Fry and donated those great desserts! Thank you for sharing in stewardship of service to the parish.

Charitable Contributions You may not be aware... Current tax laws allow individuals to make

contributions to their churches from their existing IRA

accounts without any income tax implications or

liabilities. This is something to remember as we come

to the end of the calendar year. Maintaining the

money in an IRA until year’s end allows the money to

earn the maximum amount of interest through the

course of the year.

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome our guests who have come to worship with us this Blessed Easter. We hope that you will come worship with us again soon. Our regular weekend Masses are on Saturday, 5 :00pm , S u nday , 7 :30am , 9:00 am, 11:00 am and 5:00 pm. High School Youth in the Community Dear friends, this year youth from our community are learning more

about reaching out to others while having a good time doing it. We’ve

raked leaves, prepared food, delivered meals, set tables, made cards

for Veterans and sang Christmas Carols, and we’ve only just begun!

There is so much that our youth want to do and so many great ideas

they come up with to serve in their community. As we move forward

growing and developing a well rounded youth program we ask for your

prayers.

This June, 12 youth and four adults will serve through the SHINE Catholic Work Camp in inner-city

Chicago. This experience will help us take serving to the next level. We will be living out the Gospel of

Jesus Christ by “feeding his sheep”. We will learn first hand Catholic Social Teaching and follow in the

footsteps of great Catholic leaders such as St. John Bosco, Dorthy Day, St. Vincent De Paul and

St. Francis. We look to the faithful to be our mentors and our prayer partners. Thank you for your

support but mostly thank you for your prayers.

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES – As a pastoral minister I am occasionally called upon to greet the mourners at church prior to a funeral or to preside at a wake or committal service. Often, if I have the opportunity to chat with the funeral director, I will ask him or her what drew them to this kind of work. One young man told me that his father, grandfather and great-grandfather had all been undertakers and he’d never really considered doing anything else. A young woman told the story of having attended her father’s funeral and of being impressed by the kindness of the funeral directors. And another man told of growing up next door to a funeral home and gradually becoming aware of the opportunity for closure that the funeral director offered to those who had suffered the loss of a loved one.

Human history records a wide variety of preparatory rituals for burying the dead. For the Jewish people in the time of Jesus these rituals included washing and anointing the body (much like what is done today) and this is essentially what Mary Magdalene and the other women were prepared to do. But since Jesus had been laid in the tomb on the eve of the Sabbath (Friday evening) they were prohibited from carrying out the burial rituals until the day after the Sabbath (Sunday). Likely this was what their mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers had done before them. Perhaps they had been impressed by the gentleness and respect with which the body of a loved one had been treated and had come to offer the same gift to Jesus. Or maybe they simply needed this ritual to provide closure for their own mourning.

Today, as in the time of Jesus, members of the human community take great care to respect the bodies of the dead. As Christians we recognize the presence of the Divine in each human person. Like those funeral directors – and like Mary Magdalene and the women who accompanied her – we use human rituals to affirm and proclaim that death does not have the final word.

“Christ has died; Christ is risen: Christ will come again.” ALLELUIA!!

Youth Stewardship

The Stewardship Youth Committee representing children in grades 2-8 met March 17, 2013 to select charities to which they will donate their collected funds. The children attended the 9am Eucharistic

Celebration. They had the privilege of carrying up their envelopes at the offertory. Later they discussed

local, state, national and international organizations with notable needs. Through a democratic process they made excellent choices.

Each child wrote what Stewardship meant to him/her. An example of the insight these children have:

“Catholic Stewardship for me means living my life for God as Jesus would have me do. Thinking of others and their needs and not just my own needs. Inviting others and giving a part of myself to the Church and others through participation as well a donation, prayer, singing and attending Mass.” Annabelle Mahrle- grade 3

“I think the Children’s Stewardship Committee is important because it helps kids learn how to use people’s money wisely. and it helps us become more involved in our parish community.” Claire Chier grade 5

The parish should be very proud of these children.

Thanks to All……..

The 2013 version of our Fish Fry is now history and this 17th year was another very successful undertaking.

During the six weeks, over 5,000 folks joined us for dinner either in the dining room in Good Samaritan Hall or by using our carry-out service.

This event is a wonderful social opportunity for the greater Oshkosh community to join St. Raphael parishioners over a wonderful seafood meal. The Fish Fry would not happen without the help of many volunteers. Each week, over 265 folks join the effort as we prepare, serve and clean up afterwards. We are very grateful for all of the tremendous volunteers who have helped make this year’s Fish Fry such a special time. So to all those folks who volunteered and to all of our Parishioners and Community friends who joined us at this event…..a deep heartfelt THANK YOU!!! May God’s Blessings be with you and your families!

Sincerely

Jeff Jarocki, Fish Fry Chairman

Appalachian Craft Sale coming to St. Raphael Parish

For the second year in a row, members of St. Raphael parish will either go to St. Vincent Mission in David, KY or help to support the work of the mission financially.

In anticipation of that mission trip and in an effort to help ease the poverty of the people living in Appalachia as well as to support and encourage Appalachian art and artisans, our parish will host Sister Kathleen and Sister Ruth Ann from David Appalachian Crafts in David, Kentucky on April 6 & 7 in Good Samaritan Hall. The craft show will be open from 3-6:30 pm on Saturday, April 6, and from 8 am to 1 pm and 4-7:30 pm on Sunday.

Many of the artists showcased through David Appalachian Crafts are members of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen and proudly display the Kentucky Crafted label from the Kentucky Arts Council.

All of the featured crafts are handmade. Items that will be available for sale are quilts and o t h e r f a b r i c i t e m s , hand-painted gourds, coal stat-ues, wood carvings, baby items, jewelry and much more. David Appalachian Crafts has the goal of preserving the mountain heritage of the local Appalachian community. Artists supplement their income by making and selling their crafts at the David Craft Center, which is a part of St. Vincent Mission. www.davidappalachiancrafts.com.

Bishop’s Appeal Annual Campaign The 2013 Bishop’s Appeal Campaign “Alive in Faith” is well underway. As

of March 20, over 400 families have generously contributed over $70,000.

(An average gift of nearly $175 per family) Our assessment this year is

$105,100. Considering our Parish has over 2,800 member families,

participation is only about 15%. If we have a shortfall at the end of the

campaign, we must make up the difference out of our basic operating funds. With all of the wonderful,

worthwhile work accomplished using the funds this campaign generates, if you have not made this

year’s gift, we would ask you to prayerfully consider making your gift now. If each family that has not

given a gift to date would contribute $15 each, we would reach our goal.
