EVENT USEThe layout of the site has been designed such that events can be held at the site without obvious intrusions in the design every other day of the year. A 100m x 6m race straight can be accommodated in the open space and is ideally located to make use of the service entry, proposed picnic shelter and existing buildings. The green beginner loop with optional A - lines will form the start of the race circuit and both bridge connections will provide separate access out of and back into the park.

MASTER PLAN INTENTThe Creswick Trails Master Plan identified potential to develop Creswick and the broader Goldfields Region as a world- class mountain bike and recreational trail destination. Hammon Park in Creswick town centre was identified as a trailhead for the network. This master plan is intended to provide a basic indication of layout.

As the starting point for the wider mountain bike trail network the focus for activity at Hammon Park will be cycling facilities including a pump track, jump lines, skills area and a beginner green loop trail. These features will create a hub of activity at Hammon park and allow riders to develop skills and hone their technique prior to riding the wider network. The pump track will also cater for riders seeking opportunity for freestyle style riding, complementing the recently constructed skate park in the main street of town.

A nature play space and bbq and picnic facilities will make the park suitable for all ages. Buildings in the north west should be retained and will support hosting of events. Areas in the north of the park should be kept open to provide for unstructured play and space for temporary infrastructure required for hosting of events. Throughout the trailhead/pump track/skills track and nature play areas, suitable plantings including trees for natural shade and garden beds delineating different activities should be incorporated.

MASTER PLAN ELEMENTS

CARPARK Entry off Moore St, capacity 36 spaces including 3 long spaces for larger vehicles, and a bus and shuttle drop off area. Safe pedestrian access and vegetation should be incorporated into the design. Traffic management features such as speed bumps should be incorporated into the design to deter misuse of the space. Recommended surface material is gravel to help in softening the visual impact.

TRAILHEAD Key to the overall success of the development will be a well structured trail head. The trail head should be highly accessible and feature links to features within the site, signage for the various activities, repair station, bike racks, seating and shelter. Toilet/change room facilities are ideally located in this zone.

SECONDARY TRAILHEAD / SPECTATOR ZONE A secondary trailhead / spectator zone which is elevated to provide start ramp for the pump track and jump lines. Accessible from the carpark and within the site, this secondary trail head should include signage and seating.

PUMP TRACK Accessible from both trailheads a 450sqm pump track will provide opportunity for riders to hone their technique prior to heading out on the larger trail network, and likely become a destination for riders in itself. The pump track should be constructed with an asphalt surface and incorporate grass and landscaping to the internal and surrounding areas. Engineered drainage systems would be required below berms, which would be approximately 1.2m high.

JUMP L INES Accessible from the elevated secondary trailhead, up to three jump lines could be accommodated - a beginner, intermediate and advanced line. At the end of the jump line a return berm and return pump or jump straight would create a better user experience with no need to peddle back to the start ramp. The jump lines are tucked inside the embankment to reduce visual impact for residents on Moore St, a vegetation buffer should also be included.

SKILLS AREA The skills area could feature a range of obstacles and man-made technical trail features to test the skills of a rider and allow them to try features that they may encounter on trails further afield. Features could include rock drops, rock rollers, balance beams and other technical features. The features would be built with progression allowing users to start small and build their confidence up to advanced features. Obstacles would primarily be constructed from natural materials such as rock and timber giving a ‘nature play’ feel to the area.

GREEN SKILLS LOOP There is opportunity to include a beginner green trail providing a short introductory experience and linking various elements within the site. This trail should include optional A-lines with skill features such as rock gardens and log rides.

BIKE PLAYGROUND / SAFETY TRACK The inclusion of a kid’s road and cycle safety track and a bike playground would complement the other cycling components by providing opportunity for younger kids to ride. Ideally these elements should be separated from the other components on site to ensure user safety. Locating this close to the BBQ / picnic / nature play space will allow parents/guardians to keep an eye on younger children.

BBQ / P ICNIC / NATURE PLAYSPACE Located in the centre of the site is a BBQ / picnic / nature playspace, designed to be a space for those not riding. This space should include shelter, tables, BBQs, seating and be appropriately landscaped to integrate with surrounding park features.

PEDESTRIAN CONNECTION A shared use pedestrian / cyclist path will provide more direct access through the site.

SWALE / RETENTION BASIN The master plan proposes construction of a shallow swale leading to a retention basin for lager storm events. Construction of these elements will provide some fill for elevating other areas of the park and will add interest for the green skills loop and nature play space with a change in landscape profile.

BRIDGE CONNECTIONS Bridges over Creswick Creek and the storm water channel will provide access to the broader trail network and town. OPEN SPACE Open grassed area for unstructured play, the goal posts at this end of the oval should also be retained. Open areas will also allow space for set up of temporary event infrastructure. Goal posts at the northern end of the oval should be retained and fencing / barrier on boundary of oval upgraded. VEGETATION SCREENING Trees and shrubs appropriately selected for suitability should be planted along the eastern boundary to help screen the carpark from neighbouring residents. Choice of species should consider height aiming to retain long vistas while screening the foreground. Ease of maintenance should also be a priority factor in species selection.
