Freshman Seminar Strategies• Teaching Circle Members:

– M. Gabriela Bowden– Poonam Gulati– Meghan Minard

• Goal: To create a “Strategy Bank” to be shared in Blackboard Learn at UHD with all other Freshman and University seminar instructors.

• Activities: – meet weekly to discuss the experiences of the previous week and prepare for

the upcoming week. – one or more TC member will attend a pedagogical conference to gain new

ideas for teaching a Freshman Seminar course. Upon return, conference attendees will share new knowledge and techniques in detail with remaining TC members.

– The Strategy Bank will be composed of detailed descriptions of in-class and out-of-class activities and teaching strategies, and how they were applied in a Freshman Seminar course.

• The purpose of this project is to extend and expand on the “UHD Students Provide Literacy Experiences for Children and Parents in an Inner-City School in Houston” project that confronts the need for Spanish-language books (print-based or electronic versions) for young children in Houston area public schools as well as trains our future teachers to be effective teachers of reading and writing.
