CDC2 OPENS ON SEPTEMBER 10TH
The building for CDC Phase 2 was completed in Mid-
July, and the building has undergone health and safety
testing and inspection from that time.
It was officially handed over to OIST on August 22. It
has had over one month to air out and get rid
of those new construction smells, and we will be
operating the Office, Shinka Classroom and the After
School Room in the new building from September 10.
There will be no change to the other classes, however
the back door of the CDC will remain locked from
that day, so please use the CDC main Entrance or the
playground entrance for drop off and pick up.
Please park your car in the designated parking lots on
campus and DO NOT PULL YOUR CAR UP TO
THE FRONT OF THE CDC OR AUDITORIUM
to drop off or pick up.
WELCOME RINA!!
More importantly,
I am thrilled and
cannot wait to meet
all the children in my
class!
I am looking forward
to spending time with
children and watching
them grow.
My name is Rina Kinjo and I am
excited to join the CDC team here
at OIST.
I was born and raised in Okinawa
and I plan on graduating from my
university this September.
I have experience in teaching English
to young children that come from
diverse backgrounds.
KUKURU CLASS TUMMY TIME FUN and WATER PLAYTummy Time Fun
Our littlest ones in the Kukuru class are enjoying their tummy
time every day. Exercising to strengthen one’s arm and neck
muscles are a big part of a baby’s daily routine. We will put
toys around them and encourage them to retrieve them or
place a mirror in front of them. Some babies do not like
tummy time, so we suggest parents use mom’s tummy or
chest to practice at home. We’re sure that they will learn to
enjoy tummy time! The muscles that the babies are training
are strong and essential in allowing babies to roll, sit and crawl.
Please enjoy tummy time with your child.
Water play
The children in Kukuru class love playing with water. They
enjoy water play with toys and moving their hands and
legs. The children can’t stop smiling while doing this!
When the little ones interact with natural things through their
five senses, they are able to deepen their recognition of
various things.
Through water play they can feel the changing water
temperature, sound of water, moving of water, and reflection
of light on the water.
These are all unique experiences that are sure to polish the
children’s senses.
TODDLER’S TOILET TRAININGToilet training initially begins when the toddlers are able to pull up and take off their own pants. There
are some necessary physical developments that enable the toddlers to start toilet training. As the
cerebral cortex matures, toddlers begin to become aware of the sensations of a full bladder. Typically,
toddlers are able wait approximately two hours between urinations. It is also essential that they have
acquired minimal verbal communication skills to convey the message of wanting to use the bathroom.
It is important to remember that each toddler matures at various rates, and therefore the progression
of the training will vary according to each toddler. In the toddler classes, we create a relaxing and
enjoyable environment for the toddler by reading books with pictures of the bathroom and by posting
pictures of their favorite characters in the bathroom.
When the toddlers successfully use the bathroom on their own, they proudly report to their teachers;
they are always very pleased when they receive words of complement from the teachers.
CALLIGRAPHY ACTIVITYHandwriting is an important part of literacy and an essential skill for
life. In our three years old classes we believe it’s very important to
support the development of handwriting skills from early childhood,
so that children are ready to learn formal handwriting at school.
Even though many children and adults use computers, tablets and
phones at home, school and work, handwriting is still an essential
life skill to do many tasks later in life like writing birthday cards,
filling in forms and signing important documents.
This month we prepared a calligraphy exercise for both, Kafuu and
Nuuji classes integrating both art and language. The children created
elegant Japanese characters and English letters using brushes on
paper and then displayed them around our classrooms.
This was an important experience to learn handwriting, combining
fine motor skills, language, memory and concentration. As an
additional benefit, we discovered that this activity helped our
children to be calm; They enjoyed feeling the brushes, observing the
character and practicing calligraphy. We noticed they acquired
peaceful concentration and eliminated impatience and irritation.
Every stroke they made, they stayed focused and became very
relaxed using their hands and writing their favorite characters.
TIE-DYE FABRIC EXPERIENCEThe Kugani Class August field trip was a tie dye experience at the Murasaki-Mura in Yomitan.
At the beginning, the children were given a white handkerchief, and then watched and
carefully listened to the instructions that were given by the staff of Murasaki-Mura.
The children were eager to work on their own projects, making various patterns by using
marbles and chopsticks. Depending on the way the children tied the handkerchiefs, the
patterns that appeared were different, and each one had its own rich personality. The
children were able to watch the dyeing process from beginning to end and were excited to
open the handkerchiefs to see all the different patterns created from the tie dye. Their first
tie dye experience was fun and an invaluable experience for all the children. The
handkerchiefs that the children created are displayed in the classroom for you to enjoy.
KUGANI CLASS FOOD AND NUTRITIONThis month, one of the themes in the Kugani Class,
was learning about the connection between 'food and
nutrition'.At Circle Time, each child talked about their
favorite food and what they had recently eaten, the
variety of food that they have seen at home and in the
supermarkets, food that everyone is familiar with. The
conversations were very lively among the children. We
talked about three of the major nutrients such as red
group (protein) = strong body such as teeth and
bones, yellow group (carbohydrates) = It becomes a
source of energy that moves your body energetically,
green group (fiber) found in vegetables / fruits = a
source of energy to mobilize the body, and this helped
the children deepen their mutual understanding. They
were commenting to each other that "All the food
groups are important!" In the activity, we separated
various kinds of toy food into vegetables, fruits, dairy
products, grains, proteins etc., and the children
worked together with their classmates, and enjoyed a
food bingo game learning about the connection
between food and health.
SHINKA CLASS MUSIC"No Music, No Life" is our motto on the Shinka class! If you walk
into the Shinka classroom at any time of the day, there will almost
always be music playing. The kids love listening to slow café music
during lunch, Starbucks music at snack time, funny fast-paced songs at
clean-up time, and they love listening to and dancing to the latest pop
hits during their center and activity times.
The children also love creating their own music through the use of
long cardboard tubes, bongo drums, bells, and boom whackers. We
use the boom whackers at circle time every day to countdown, or
just play around with rhythm and clapping games. Some of the kids
are also starting to understand a little bit about solfége because the
boom whackers are clearly labeled with their musical notes on
them. One of the songs that children have just started learning to
play on the boom whackers is "Row, Row, RowYour Boat".
Aside from listening to, and creating music, the kids also love singing and dancing! Some of
their favorite songs/singing games right now are "Five Green and Speckled Frogs" and "Bump
Up Tomato". The latter is also a wonderful syncopation game in which the end goal is for one
child to choose a friend and make them laugh! The love this one right now.
The Shinka class are also learning how to play Eisa. Eisa is an Okinawa traditional dance with
drums (called Pa-ranku). The children have been practicing for about a month, and they are
getting used to it. When we turn on the music during center time, the children suddenly start
to sing and do the dance. They are really enjoying Eisa, and will perform at Tanchano-oka when
we have Keirou no hi, which is Seniors' Day!! We also plan to perform at the winter concert!!

A MORE ECO HEALTH CHILDCARE
14
The OIST Child Development Center is working to reduce environmental hazards for the children of Tedako
and the School Age Program one small step at a time.
Certain plastics are know to contain toxic chemicals which have negative impacts on human health. 99% of the
children at the CDC have plastic cups for snack time.
To be as safe and healthy as possible, the CDC has purchased stainless steel cups for children to use instead.
We are sending your child’s cup home and will use the school’s cup from now on.
Additionally, encourage parents not to heat or microwave food
or drink in any plastic containers. Heating plastics causes it to
leach chemicals including BPA and Pthalates into food and
liquids. These chemicals have negative health effects on our
rapidly growing children.
Parents often send children’s lunch in plastic and ask us to heat
it in the microwave. Teachers have safety concerns about heavy
and breakable containers such as glass and plastic. For parents
who wish to transition away from plastics, we recommend to
heat the food at home and send it in a stainless steel container
in an insulated bag.
