Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,

This Wednesday, July 31st, we celebrate the feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, a saint whose contributions to the Church have been quite significant.

Just by way of a brief background, St. Ignatius was born in 1491 in the Basque Country of Spain. Ignatius was an aristocratic Spanish soldier who discerned his calling after suffering nearly fatal wounds on the battlefield in 1521 in Pamplona. That prompted him to reconsider his life. He ends up recuperating, reading books about Jesus and the saints and then he starts having these experiences in prayer that made him realize that his former way of life was not nearly as satisfying as trying to live a holy life. He then went on and established the Society of Jesus (The Jesuits) in 1540, instructing the early Jesuits — to go out and "find God in all things." That is the signature spirituality of the Jesuits.

Ignatian spirituality is grounded in the conviction that God is active in our world. As the great Jesuit paleontologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin wrote: "God is not remote from us. He is at the point of my pen, my pick, my paintbrush, my needle — and my heart and my thoughts." The spiritual path laid out by Ignatius is a way of discerning God's presence in our everyday lives. And doing something about it.

There are three major tenants to the spirituality of St. Ignatius.

1. Finding God in all things. That simply means that God is not simply confined to the walls of the church or a monastery, or our prayer books, but rather God is found in everyone and in everything -- in our work, in our relationships, in our music, in art, etc. . . . God is found in absolutely every element of creation. It’s a very broad kind of spirituality. One of the reasons that Ignatian spirituality is attractive to so many is because it finds God in all things.

2. Contemplative in action. This means that we can have a kind of a contemplative stance in the world. We might say that contemplative in action is where our intellect is engaged as we go about doing the nitty-gritty work of the world. It gives us a chance to pause and acknowledge what we’ve been doing, whether in our work or personal life. It not only offers needed rest but also helps us move into the next stage: reflection.

3. Freedom. Freedom and detachment means that we are not so attached to things that we cannot do God’s will.

One of the most popular Ignatian exercises is the Daily Examen. It's a spiritual self-review that involves prayerfully recollecting moments during the day and reflecting on how God was present at those times, followed by a decision to act in some way. The Examen is concrete: It focuses your mind on segments of time (no more than a day, preferably), and the feelings that stirred within you, at those specific moments. Finding God in all things is at the core of Ignatian Spirituality and is rooted in our growing awareness that God can found in every one, in every place and in everything. When we learn to pay more attention to God, we become more thankful and reverent, and through this we become more devoted to God, more deeply in love with our Creator.

Ignatian spirituality is embraced by people of all different faith traditions, as well as by some agnostics and even atheists. St. Ignatius dealt with people from all walks of life -- royalty, politicians, poor people, etc. . . and despite the great diversity of peoples, his experience showed him that almost everyone has some kind of a desire or longing for the eternal, for the divine, for God. Ignatian Spirituality simply reminds us that God meets us where we are!

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,

Este miércoles, 31 de julio, es la fiesta de San Ignacio de Loyola – un santo cuyas contribuciones a la iglesia han sido bastante signi-ficativas.

Solo mencionando brevemente su historial, San Ignacio nació en el año 1491 en el territorio vasco de España. Ignacio era un soldado español aristocrático que percibió su llamado después de sufrir heridas casi fatales en el campo de batalla en el año 1521 en Pam-plona. Eso lo hizo reconsiderar su vida. Él acaba recuperándose, leyendo libros sobre Jesús y los santos y entonces comienza te-niendo unas experiencias en oración que le hicieron darse cuenta de que su forma de vida anterior no era tan satisfactoria como tratando de vivir una vida religiosa. Entonces él estableció la So-ciedad de Jesús (los jesuitas) en el 1540, instruyendo a los prime-ros jesuitas –a que salieran “a encontrar a Dios en todas las cosas.” Esa es la espiritualidad distintiva de los jesuitas.

La espiritualidad ignaciana tiene sus raíces en la convicción de que Dios está activo en nuestro mundo. Como el gran paleontólogo jesuita Pierre Teilhard de Chardin escribió, “Dios no está alejado de nosotros. Él está en la punta de mi bolígrafo, mi pico, mi pin-cel, mi aguja – y mi corazón y mis pensamientos.” El camino espi-ritual trazado por Ignacio es una manera de discernir la presencia de Dios en nuestras vidas diarias. Y tomando acción al respecto.

Hay tres grandes reglas para la espiritualidad de San Ignacio.

1. Encontrar a Dios en todas las cosas. Eso sencillamente signifi-ca que Dios no está simplemente confinado entre las paredes de la iglesia o un monasterio, o nuestros libros de oración, pero en vez, Dios se encuentra en todas las personas y en todas las cosas – en nuestro trabajo, en nuestras relaciones, en nuestra comunidad, en el arte, etc…Dios se encuentra absolutamente en todos los elemen-tos de la creación. Es una manera muy amplia de espiritualidad. Una de las razones que la espiritualidad ignaciana es tan atractiva para tantos es porque encuentra a Dios en todas las cosas.

2. Contemplación en acción. Esto significa que podemos tener una manera de postura contemplativa en el mundo. Es decir, que la contemplación en acción es cuando nuestro intelecto está invo-lucrado mientras hacemos el trabajo necesario del mundo. Más de una oportunidad de pausar y admitir lo que hemos estado hacien-do, así sea en nuestro trabajo o en nuestra vida personal. No solo ofrece descanso necesario pero también nos ayuda a entrar en la próxima etapa: la reflexión.

Libertad. Libertad y desprendimiento significa que no estamos tan apegados a las cosas que no podemos hacer la voluntad de Dios.

Uno de los ejercicios ignacianos más populares es el examen dia-rio. Es un repaso espiritual de sí mismo que significa recordar en oración momentos durante el día y reflexionando cómo Dios estu-vo presente en esos momentos, seguido por una decisión para actuar de alguna manera. El examen es concreto. Nos enfoca la mente en segmentos del tiempo (no más de un día, preferiblemen-te), y los sentimientos que nos conmovieron en esos momentos específicos. El encontrar a Dios en todas las cosas está en el cen-tro del espiritualismo ignaciano y está arraigado en el aumento de consciencia de que Dios puede ser encontrado en cada persona, cada lugar y en todo. Cuando aprendemos a ponerle más atención a Dios, nos volvemos más agradecidos y reverentes y a través de esto nos hacemos más devotos a Dios, más enamorados de nues-tro Creador.

La espiritualidad ignaciana es acogida por personas de diferentes tradiciones de fe, al igual que por algunos agnósticos y hasta ateos. San Ignacio trataba con personas de todos los caminos de la vida – realeza, políticos, gente pobre, etc…y a pesar de la gran diversidad de las personas, su experiencia le demostró que todos tienen algu-na clase de deseo o anhelo por lo eterno, por lo divino, por Dios. ¡La espiritualidad ignaciana sencillamente nos recuerda que Dios nos encuentra a dónde estemos!

ASCENSION MEN’S HOMELESS SHELTER

We wanted to say THANK YOU to all the wonderful volunteers that made this season of the Ascension Men’s Homeless Shelter so great. From September through June, this wonderful community of over 100 came together to:

Run the shelter for 76 days

Make over 1,000 beds

Hand out 100s of socks, underwear, pants, and shirts

Serve over 1,000 meals (more if we count a few leftovers for lunch :))

We cleaned, slept, cooked, and served.

We listened, we offered kind words, we inspired and were inspired in kind.

We are humbled by the generosity and support of this group to make sure that the most vulnerable amongst us have dignity, safety, and support. Our men are lucky to have each and every one of you and your friends and family who also turned out to serve.

Queríamos agradecerles a todos los maravillosos voluntarios que hicieron que esta temporada del Refugio para Personas sin Hogar de la Ascensión sea tan grandiosa. Desde septiem-bre hasta junio, esta maravillosa comunidad de más de 100 personas se unieron para:

Ejecutar el refugio durante 76 días.

Repartir 100s de calcetines, ropa interior, pantalones y cami-sa.

Escuchamos, ofrecimos palabras amables, inspiramos y nos inspiramos.

Nos sentimos humildes por la generosidad y el apoyo de este grupo para asegurarnos de que los más vulnerables entre nosotros tengan dignidad, seguridad y apoyo. Nuestros hombres tienen la suerte de tener a todos y cada uno de ustedes, sus amigos y familiares, que también participaron en el servicio.
