Ive quilted nearly 26 years, have sewn longer than that, and Im looking forward to the fu- ture of this organization. Change in any organization is a necessity. Change encourages growth and new ideas— and it can be painful. The Appliqué Society has experienced a great deal of change in a short amount of time and I know for many of us it has been a bit difficult saying good- bye to the way we used to do things and adjusting to new stuff. On a personal note, I would like to thank each and every board member for their support, ideas, and patience as we have worked through each and every change and addition. They are simply won- derful ladies with a passion for appliqué and a passion for TAS. I want to encourage our members to join our Facebook page. Meet our new President. . .

I’d like to introduce myself…

My name is Sherri Fields and I’m the new TAS President. I’ve been a member of The Appli-qué Society for several years and have served on the board for a few of those years. I’ve quilted nearly 26 years, have sewn longer than that, and I’m looking forward to the fu-ture of this organization.

Change in any organization is a necessity. Change encourages growth and new ideas—and it can be painful. The Appliqué Society has experienced a great deal of change in a short amount of time and I know for many of us it has been a bit difficult saying good-bye to the way we used to do things and adjusting to new stuff. On a personal note, I would like to thank each and every board member for their support, ideas, and patience as we have worked through each and every change and addition. They are simply won-derful ladies with a passion for appliqué and a passion for TAS.

I want to encourage our members to join our Facebook page. It’s here you can find the “breaking news” about our group. Members post pictures of what they’re working on and our board members visit that page frequently to see what concerns our members are voicing. There is the latest information about the annual meeting and upcoming events. I look at the page at least once a day to answer questions and be inspired by our mem-bers’ projects. Please post pictures of your appliqué – I love seeing them!

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Barbara Clucas. She has stepped up and agreed to be our newsletter editor, taking over for Patti Ives. After 16 years of edit-ing, Patti has retired. We wish her a wonderful retirement and lots of time for appliqué.

Lastly – and certainly not least – I would like to give my heartfelt thanks to our outgoing President, Virginia Elliott. She has worked long and hard seeing TAS through the bulk of the difficult changes: moving to all elec-tronic communication, new people on the board, changing the dues date to May, and hundreds of other issues that have cropped up while making these changes. Her wisdom has been stellar and her devotion to TAS un-shakeable. We couldn’t have asked for a better leader during this time.

We are still working hard for our members. We ask for your patience and suggestions during this time of change.

Love and Stitches,

Sherri

WHAT’S INSIDE

FROM THE EDITOR. . . .

Hi, my name is Barbara Clucas and I am the

new editor for the newsletter. I hope you will be

patient with me while I figure this whole thing

out. I have worked on a smaller newsletter in the

past but it was a few years back, so I have some

learning to do with catching up on the updated

version of Publisher.

I am an appliquér and quilter, but think of myself

as being fairly new to the field. Even though I

have sewed my whole life, I just started really

quilting in 2006 when we put an addition on our

house and I got a new sewing room. I have al-

ways loved doing handwork and was drawn to

appliqué almost right away. I attended

‘The Appliqué Academy’ in Williamsburg, VA for 6 years

and this year went to Texas to the new ‘Academy of Appli-

qué’. My greatest accomplishment is finishing a pattern by

Pearl Pereira - ‘Baltimore Autumn’. It took me two years

to complete, but it was well worth my efforts and I have

won several ribbons with it. My latest project is Pearl’s

‘Bountiful Baskets’ quilt with all the flowers from each

state in a small basket. The center of the top is finished and

I am working on the last corner of the border.

I want to give a big ‘Thank You’ to Patti Ives for all the

help she has given me and the things that she sent to me to help me get started. When I

look back over past copies of the newsletter, I realized how much Patti

did for the newsletter, doing interviews, doing book reviews, and also

finding us the newest and greatest gadgets to shop for, for better appli-

quéing. I’m sure there is more that she did that I’m not aware of and

haven’t listed, but Patti needs a big hand for all the work she did on the

newsletter.

I regret to say that this newsletter is not going to be up to par with past newsletters, as far

as content and number of pages. Since I am just taking over this job, I haven’t had time to

accumulate articles and patterns, and information from other Chapters and members on

what’s happening. Which leads me to my next request! If you have something that you

want to submit or have submitted in the past and it didn’t get published, PLEASE send it to

me. Contributions from members and from the different Chapter keep the community

alive and vital. So , if you have something to share please don’t hesitate.

Don’t forget, ‘Appliqué every Day’,

Thanks,

Barb

Barbara Dieges Interview Answered By: Patti Ives

Since early childhood, Barbara has been working with threads and fabrics. Her grandmother and aunts always found ways to keep little hands busy with needlework. She still cherishes her little Singer Featherweight, but now prefers the Bernina 153 for most of her patchwork and machine quilting.

After graduating from college, Barbara taught kindergarten before starting her family. While raising three children, she designed for Bucilla Yarn, developing her own line of stitchery kits. She taught creative stitchery, cross-stitch and needlepoint at local needlework shops and various parks and recreation centers. Barbara made her first quilt in 1969, for her first child, but it was in 1982 that she became a dedicated quilter. She has had several years of in-depth study of quilt history, design and techniques with some very traditional and non-traditional quilt teachers. As a member of two quilt guilds, she is involved in all phases of quilting. She has designed three opportunity quilts for these two guilds. Her quilts have won top awards at the annual Glendale Quilt Guild Show and have been exhibited nationally. Since 1992, Barbara has had eight quilts juried into Ameri-can Quilter’s Society Show in Paducah, KY and four into the Interna-tional Quilt Association in Houston, TX. She has also has had numer-ous patterns and books published, as well as teaching quilt classes on line at Quilt University which is now Academy of Quilting, which is also on line. Her book, “A Thread Runs Through It”, based on her one woman play, has brought her great satisfaction. When did you first decide that appliqué was a quilt method you would like to work with? Handwork is my first love, so appliqué fits right in. When I was learning how to quilt my first two teach-ers taught only hand piecing and appliqué. So I made a few that way, but when I thought about all the quilts I wanted to make, I knew that I would have to teach myself how to piece by machine. Especially when people looked at my hand piecing and said they were machine pieced, I figured why bother! Appli-qué is different, I have tried machine appliqué and it is not my thing. I don't like the stress of trying to make it look like hand appliqué. The other thing that I like about hand appliqué, is that it is portable, my appliqué projects can travel with me wherever I go, my machine can't. I stitch in the car, at meetings, waiting for appointments, children's games, etc. I think you get the point! Do you have a favorite appliqué method? I do needle under when there is no other choice, for instance, all the snowflakes on my “Snow Crystals Quilt” that was the QNL cover quilt January 1999, are appliquéd with that method. However I really pre-fer freezer paper appliqué. It takes a little extra prep time, but I can baste all the appliqué pieces in place for a block, pop it in a plastic bag and it is ready to go! The edges are all turned under and all I have to do is stitch. Barbara, thank you so much for the generous donation of your patterns. We will be running them throughout this upcoming publishing year, starting with the Flower Basket Block and the Daisy Basket block. I know you are working on a project combining four of these patterns can you tell us about the project? It is a very simple little quilt that I hope will inspire our members to come up with their own ideas. I usu-ally like to combine piecing with appliqué, whether it is in alternate blocks or in the sashing. Personally I think the straight lines of the piecing compliment the softer curved lines of the appliqué.

Craftsy website page. If you would like to be notified each month when the blocks come out, just go to the blog and sign up in the right hand column. Just make sure to respond to the email that is sent to you when you sign up, because that will put you on the notification list. Any hints or tips you can pass along for those choosing to work on the basket patterns? Not any that aren't already included with the patterns. It has been a while since I designed them, so I perused my instructions and updated anything in there that needed changing. Barbara, your blog is so interesting and I enjoy spending time look-ing at your work and the work of those following your block of the month projects. Is it too late for us to get in on your 2016 Alphabet Block of the Month? Not really, you might have missed the first couple of months, but they are available for a nominal fee on my Craftsy website page. If you would like to be notified each month when the blocks come out, just go to the blog and sign up in the right hand column. Just make sure to respond to the email that is sent to you when you sign up, because that will put you on the notification list. Is your book “A Thread Runs Through It”, published by AQS, still available? It can be purchased through my website. I still have a few copies available. Your blog post relating to using circle punches to make circle templates has inspired me to start collecting these punches as well. I have all the different size punches for hexagons for my English Paper Piecing projects but it never occurred to me to use the circle punches for appliqué templates. Thank you for shar-ing that. I would like to encourage everyone to visit Barbara’s home page at http://bdieges.com

Then select the “blog” button to visit her blog.

Two of Barb D.’s patterns for the flower baskets will be in this issue and two will be in the next one.
