Sand and ErosionMonitoring System

OPTIMISE PRODUCTION AND AVOID EROSION DAMAGE

THROUGH RELIABLE SAND EROSION MONITORING

CorrOcean delivers the most sensitiveand reliable Sand Erosion System in theindustry, with a proven track record fromnumerous installations.

The main features and benefits are:

• The system responds within minutes tosignificant sand production allowingaction before erosion damage takesplace

• Direct measurement of erosion inpipework

• The system requires no on-site calibra-tion and is unaffected by slug flow, me-chanical noise, electrical noise, variations in flow composition - oroperator errors

• Increased production rates (maximumerosion free production)

• Combinations of sand/erosion, corro-sion, pressure and temperature sensorsfor increased flexibility and costsavings

• Simple and rugged installation forsubsea and topside applications

• Direct input to CorrOcean’s erosionprediciton model - predicts erosion inunmonitored pipework

• Application for sand monitoring in wellappraisal and drilling programmes

A Complete Sand Erosion Monitoring SystemThe Sand Erosion Monitoringsystem is based on measuring thechange in electrical resistance ofthin sensing elements which areeroded by sand. The system readsthe erosive effect directly and isreliable at all sand productionrates and flow regimes. It is highlyresistant to acoustic noise frompumps or variable flow.

The probe is read by sophisti-cated electronics adapted to theuser environment. Off-line and on-line systems in various configura-tions are available.

The user data is read byMultiTrend, a combined configu-ration, data analysis andpresentation tool for sand erosionand corrosion monitoringnetworks.

The value of the actual readingsmay be extended by using theErosion Prediction model, asoftware tool for predicting worstcase erosion on critical pipeelements such as chokes or bendsbased on erosion measurementsor sand production data fromother applications.

Subsea System ConfigurationThe subsea system offers sand moni-toring close to the reservoir, detectingsand production at an early stage andminimizing the damage. For many ofthe new oil and gas fields with tiebackto remote platforms, this becomes theonly viable solution to proper sandmonitoring.

A Subsea System consists of:• A compact and rugged Sand Probe

Assembly. The probe offers combi-nations of erosion and corrosion mon-itoring as well as pressure and temperaturemeasurements

• Signal Condition Unit for probe control and on-line communication. The communication electronics are fully integrated in the subsea Electronic Module (by others)

• MultiTrend PC software for storing and graphing data. The data can also bean integrated part of the production control system

Surface System ConfigurationA standard system consists of:• A Sand Probe in a standard 2” fitting,

mechanical or hydraulic

• SandLog for on-line communicationand data storage for optional off-lineoperation

• CorrOcean FieldBus installation, forefficient communica-tion and powersupply

• MultiTrend PC software for s t o r i n gand graphing data

System Options

Erosion Prediction ModelCorrOcean has developed a general erosion correlation model. The model is used for predicting metal loss on critical componentsin a system based on measured erosion on a sand erosion probe. The model can be used in the ‘operations’ phase (dynamic mode)as described above, but also as an engineering design tool foroptimising pipe dimensions, geometry and material selection.

Erosion And Corrosion In Well Appraisal And DrillingCorrOcean offers sand well test services, where both sand productionand corrosion is shown during the test. The test shows the dynamicinterrelation of well flow, sand erosion and corrosiveness over time, helping to predict possible operational problems. The sand erosionsystem can also be used to protect mud flow pipework during under-balanced drilling.

Pressure/Temperature ReadingsThe sand and erosion probe can be integrated with a highly accurate, stable androbust pressure and temperature gauge. This offers both lower cost and complexityfor pressure/temperature readings as well as accurate production parameters forthe erosion prediction model.

Communication Options• Off-line communication - data are retrieved from SandLog

and transferred to MultiTrend utilizing a MultiCorr instrument• On-line communication - data communication from SandLog via Field Bus Master.

Other solutions (e.g. telephone modem) also available• Subsea systems interfaced directly with all major subsea control systems

Sand and Erosion Monitoring CombinedWith Corrosion Monitoring:Sand Erosion Monitoring and Corrosion Monitoring canbe combined at different levels.• Combined sand erosion and corrosion probe - read

corrosiveness and erosion in a single point.• SandLog instrument monitoring one sand erosion probe

and one corrosion probe, for reduced instrumentationoverhead and installation costs.

• SandLog instruments for sand erosion monitoring andMultiLog instruments for corrosion monitoring combined in the sameField bus system. Build the system on an as-needed basis.

• MultiTrend software handles both sand erosion and corrosion monitoring inthe same program, simplifying reporting and maintenance of the system.
