When designing a video surveillance system for a client, it is always very important to listen to and address their specific needs.

Some projects may come with a build list of products or specifications that the end-user is looking for, while some are more flexible.

Requirements

RequirementsAs our example, we will be using Dunder Mifflin of Scranton, OH (The Office) Michael, the Branch Manager, has requested the following:

• Cameras the in conference room with as much coverage as possible• Coverage near the front, the kitchen, the annex and break room• Some coverage on the floor, recording sales, accounting and the stairs• No recording needed in individual offices or bathrooms• Access control at the office entrance with key cards for each employee• Lockable NVR to be placed in Michael’s office for tamper-proof recording

The Location

RecommendationsAlthough some bids may have a required style or resolution of camera, ours does not. In these cases, there are online tools such as pixel/lens calculators for distance, as well as a large number of different cameras to choose from. Usually there is no single perfect camera, so looking at options is key.

Fisheye will be used for the common sales area and the annex as the 360° view covers the large open spaces well, without any additional cameras

Bullet cameras will be used exclusively in the stairwell, as they are relatively inexpensive by comparison, but not as visually appealing

Dome cameras will be used in the conference room, break rooms and front lobby, as they are more covert in appearance and are generally more visually appealing

RecommendationsLet’s not forget the other requirements of the build…

• Access control at the office entrance with key cards for each employee

• Lockable NVR to be placed in Michael’s office for tamper-proof recording*

*We have a case in mind, we’ll look at specs soon!

Storage CalculationIn order to choose the proper recording server for a system, the total number of megapixels from connected cameras needs to be calculated.

From there, factors such as camera frame rate, retention length and daily motion need to be considered.

The more accurate a calculation, the better.

Video RecordersThere are many different recording devices available, which can make choosing the right one difficult. Video Recording Servers are available for analog, IP or hybrid-based systems, with different form factors, MP ratings and storage capacities.

Page 12: System Design Simplified

Video RecordersIn this example, we have all IP cameras, therefore the clear choice would be a Network Video Recorder. Since there is no server room, we know we can’t use a rackmount NVR. We chose the Sentry SVR with a lockable door to prevent system tampering by employees.

The Sentry SVR is a small, but powerful NVR for mainstream security solutions. The model used in this example is capable of recording up to 30MP from connected IP cameras, but is available in models up to 85MP.

Case: Lockable, small & compactIncluded Storage: 2 TBAvailable Storage: Up to 18 TBMP Rating: 30MP, 50MP or 85MP

Requirements:Lockable case1.34 TB Storage17.8MP Rating

*Having a higher MP rating and storage capacity is always good – scalability allows for easy system expansion later down the road

SoftwareDepending on the requirements of a build (number and type/brand of cameras, compatibility) as well as whether or not the system requires certain analytics.

Requirements:Of the cameras chosen for the Scranton Branch build, we have

3 GeoVision Fisheyes6 Axia BFL/Domes

9 Cameras total

Recommendation:Because we have a larger number of Axia than GeoVision for this installation, it would be more practical to use the Axia software with added GV (3rd party) licenses

Because we have 9 cameras, either GV or Axia VMS would be applicable (Axia max. is 64, GV max. is 32)

However,Since we are incorporating multiple 360° cameras, we will require a de-warping software to accommodate them – an analytic that comes with GV software but not on Axia

The GV-VMS software would be a better selection for this system

AccessoriesNow, with the major pieces of the system defined, we can begin to fill in the blanks with cabling and accessories that will allow the system to work properly.

IP-based cameras run using Cat5 cable to a PoE Switch (power over ethernet), so we will need to add these. As this system has 9 cameras, a 16-port PoE switch will be used. • Each camera will be mounted either on a wall or ceiling -

so no brackets will be needed.• Since the installation area is small, no PoE extenders or

injectors will be needed either.

Care and WarrantyWhen it comes to making purchases, especially with technical equipment, clients want to ensure that they are being covered for a reasonable period of time in case of a flaw or issue with their products.

Due to the regular use that surveillance cameras go through, as well as unforeseen issues, many users prefer to have the option of a warranty. This way, whether you’re installing a large or small system, it can be assured that it will last as long as it is worth.
