Before we look into Chart, Challenge, Change™ we need to examine the importance of processes.

The effectiveness and efficiency of a process can impact a multitude of areas.

These could include customer experience, governance and control, reputation and ability to deliver strategic objectives.

Fundamentally, it will play a large part in business performance, involving cost, quality and delivery.

Improving your process can be challenging.

The nature of business processes can be complex, and they may also involve multiple departments.

It requires time and resources to map processes.

So what is the solution?

The solution, can be achieved by using the following:

Areas requiring improvement can be developed by focus mapping areas.

Using a proven methodology will also aid the improvement of a particular process.

Additionally, getting support from the experts of that field will only help to increase the improvement possibilities of the relevant business process.

The Chart, Challenge, Change™ methodology proceeds through a number of phases, as demonstrated below.

Over the next few slides, we will examine each phase, and what it offers to the overall improvement methodology.

Step one – Identify need and define goal:

During the first phase of the methodology, the following is set to take place.

• The business driver will be clarified, whether that be a particular strategy or market pressures, for example.

• The measurable success criteria will be drawn up, along with the activity plan. Stakeholders will be engaged.

• The outcomes of step one are that: a statement of scope, delivery plan and both process hierarchy and heat maps will have been developed.

Step two – Chart to understand:

This phase includes working with employees to chart the current “as-is” process.

• Performance data will be gathered and constraints identified.

• Business rules and regulatory requirements will be captured.

• As a result of step two, a swimlane map of the “as-is” process will be developed, along with a process walkthrough and current state analysis.

• A summary report will be generated by this stage.

Step one – Challenge to improve:

The first step of phase two is called “Challenge to Improve”, and involves process analysis workshops and walk-throughs.

• An essential part in this step is to identify both what is necessary and any improvement opportunities.

• As a result, you should leave the step with a “to-be” process, and a developed process walkthrough.

• In addition, there should be management reporting and a statement of future state.

Step two – Plan and implement change:

The fourth step in the Chart, Challenge, Change™ methodology involves the implementation procedure.

• Implementation will be planned, and benchmark measures will be set.

• Then, you will implement the procedure and this will be coupled with change management.

• After this step, you will have a delivery plan, business case and BluePrint; in addition to a requirements document and a change and communication plan.

Step one – Sustain change and benefits:

The final step in the methodology is sustaining the change and benefits that have resulted from the whole process – arguably the most vital step which ensures a continuation of the earlier success.

• There will be a development of capabilities to support “business as usual” and a governance has to be set in place.

• A process maintenance plan will be established.

• Leaving this step, you will have a business acceptance document, benefits measures and the above process maintenance plan.

• Usefully, opportunities for further improvement will be put in place.
