Rabbi Shore has found using the ViewSonic to be a great way to show a video, pause itand be able to highlight important parts right on the screen.

Even our Security Officers enjoy using the technology with us!

Best of all we can all get together to watch a movie on a big screen. It makes PJ andMovie Days awesome!!!

Today we were able to thank M&T Bank and The Jewish Federation of Central New Yorkfor a grant that allowed SHDS to get new technology for our school. We were able to geta ViewSonic Interactive Board, Amazon Fire 8 tablets, laptops, and OSMO Genius kits. Also, we were able to secure online subscriptions for learning programs like Typetasticand Spelling Vocabulary City.

Feature of the Week: 3rd & 4th GradeMay the 3rd & 4th be with you!!!

We have been very busy in 3rd and 4th grade, as always.

MathIn 3rd grade math, we have been learning about Place Value and Rounding Numbers. We practiced these skills when we had to count how many seeds were in our pumpkinsby making 10s and 100s.

In 4th grade math, we have been learning about patterns and sequences. Our 3rd gradeclassmates helped us to make a human pattern… girl, boy, girl, boy.

ELAThird grade has been working hard on improving their spelling skills. Each week, therehave been new words to study and add to their mental spelling dictionary. We have alsobeen doing journal writing, which they love. It’s hard to get them to stop writing! The students have also been using an interactive program on the laptops called eSparkthat works on reading and vocabulary skills. They love it.

In fourth grade Writer's Workshop, the students are working on research papers. Thestudents have chosen topics and are using a variety of resources to compose an essay.Mrs. Silverman, SHDS librarian and media specialist, worked with the students on usingonline tools to create a "Bibliography/Works Cited" section for each paper, because thestudents are expected to use and cite credible sources for their work. It is exciting towatch the students develop their questions into pieces others will learn from!

ScienceWe were learning all about plants and completed the unit by doing pumpkin experimentsand growing our own pumpkin plants from pumpkin seeds we removed from ourdissected pumpkins. It was a messy science experiment!

Now, we have started a unit on the human body and are using our favorite websiteMystery Science to make real world connections. Ask the 3rd and 4th graders what theythought of the lesson on the human eye. I’m sure they will enjoy telling you all about thevideos.

Social StudiesIn Social Studies, we are continuing to learn all we can about New York State. The 3rdand 4th graders worked hard on our NYS Physical Features unit and created webposters to share their knowledge of what they learned. NY is a great state!

Now we are working on our Early People of NYS unit and are learning about the Iroquois. We could be reading about them from our textbooks, but instead Mrs. Seidman gave ustask cards. We have to travel around the classroom with our partner and search foranswers to questions about the Iroquois using the book ...If You Lived with the Iroquoisby Ellen Levine. It’s fun to be able to learn in a different way.

Explore 34Together 3rd and 4th graders do special projects every week. We just finishedsponsoring a Pajama and Book Drive for the Pajama Program. The kids love to do thistzedakah project to help others just like them. This program makes it possible for kids inthe local community to have new pjs and books so they can have a good night even iftragedy strikes. Thank you to everyone who supported this project.

Also, Explore 34 recently did some reflection on their 2019 year and set goals for 2020.These mobiles are hanging on a bulletin board outside our classroom for all to see. Stopby some time to see how we thought our 2019 was and what we look forward to in 2020.

Kita Alef & Kita BetIn Kita Alef and Kita Bet, we are learning about the order of the day, which incorporates Hebrewvocabulary words for times of the day, as well as things we do and use at home and at school. We are also spiraling body vocabulary words, which we learned earlier this year, by labeling theparts of snowmen we've painted. An essential part of our learning is, as always, singing andmovement! Next week we will begin talking (and singing!) about the upcoming holiday of TuBishvat, and how important trees are to us and to the environment. We are very busy, workingand learning together!-G'veret Zames
