Nature of harmonics:

During the last three decades we have moved away from linear loads such as electrical motors with mechanical speed control, and heaters towards non-linear loads such as computers, printers, and light dimmers. Therefore, attention should be given to the transformer on the load line of an electrical system. Any distortions in the voltage or current wave cause harmonics. Harmonics are multiples of base frequency (base frequency in North America is 60 Hz) that when added together, form the actual wave form. Depending on the amount of different harmonics present in the electrical system, the ideal sinusoidal wave can take different shapes.

Sources of harmonics:

Today's loads draw current differently compared to the loads of the past. Equipment such as computers, monitors, copiers, fax machines, scanners, and printers were not as frequently used in past decades. In today's industries, three phase Non-linear loads such as Variable Frequency Drives are widely used as well. Also, manufacturers are taking advantage of robots, plasma cutters and other electronic and computer controlled equipment that is relatively new to the industry. All of these loads create harmonics with damaging effects and need to be addressed accordingly.

Common types of harmonics:

The most dominants types of harmonics that have the greatest magnitude and cause the most damage are 3rd, 5th and 7th. Single-phase electronic loads such as computers, monitors, printers, copiers, scanners, and fax machines have a wide spectrum in these harmonics. Three phase loads such as Variable Frequency Drives and manufacturing robots create mostly 5th and 7th harmonics, if they are 6 pulse drives, and otherwise 11th and 13th harmonics, if they are of 12 pulse drives nature.

Effects of harmonics:

Different harmonics have varying effects on multiple parts of the electrical system. They can cause equipment to malfunction and/or fail, transformers to overheat, and a reduction in transformer capacity (leading to electrical infrastructure over sizing).

When harmonics are applied to transformers, they can easily overheat and despite their ruggedness burn long before they reach their nominal capacities. A study conducted by IEEE 1996 shows harmonics can cause a transformer to reach its maximum temperature rise when it is loaded to just 50% of its capacity.

Fact Sheet

Page 6: Synergy Unit 9 - 3182 Orlando Drive Energy - Intellivex - Product_Catalogue_2010.pdf · Unit 9 - 3182 Orlando Drive ... Mitigating products that meet and exceed the efficiency standards

Third harmonics and its odd multiples get trapped in the delta primary of a standard

Delta-Wye transformer causing it to overheat and reduce its efficiency. The extra

heat will also require extra environmental cooling that will increase the electrical

consumption.

Fifth and seventh harmonics pass through the transformer to the utility grid causing

the reduction of Power Factor and an increase in utility bill.

Solution:

Transformers are the most important infrastructure of any electrical system and are

required to be sized and applied with full attention to harmonic creating loads.

Our Unsurpassed Solution:

By considering the K load factor, Synergy Energy Inc. designs and manufactures the

harmonic mitigating transformers, which are capable of mitigating the 3rd, 5th, 7th,

9th, 13th and 15th harmonics at the system level.

Harmonic mitigating capabilities of transformers designed and manufactured by

Synergy Energy Inc. makes them facilitators for IEEE 519 conformity. Furthermore,

the transformers meet the low Audible Noise levels of NEMA and are designed,

manufactured, and tested in accordance to all applicable standards of UL, CSA,

IEEE, ANSI, and NEMA.

Transformers designed and manufactured by Synergy Energy Inc. meet and exceed

the required efficiency levels of NEMA TP-1, CSA 802.2 and US Department of

Energy (DOE) CSL-3 standards. Furthermore, the efficiency compliance with NEMA

and CSA standards of the transformers are verified by the third party verification

body, Intertek, one of the most trusted test organizations in the world. Verified

products carry the Intertek Efficiency Verification logo together with the related

Verification number.

With numerous optional features such as lug kits, various enclosure types and

colors, ceiling and wall mount brackets and hardware, digital voltmeter with selector

switch, audio/visual over-temperature alarm, ground busbar, phase loss alarm,

thermal sensors, over-current alarm, various temperature rise & frequency, ultra

quiet, capacitor life indicator, THD indicator and electrostatic shields are offered as

options, transformers and products designed and manufactured by Synergy Energy

Inc. are among the most selected and recommended ones by technical experts in

the industry.

The finished products are shipped in a shrink-wrapped, gray NEMA 3R enclosure

with corner protectors on our unique SmartSkid® for safe and effortless

transportation and installation.

Quality & Safety Compliance:

Considering the hazardous result of a faulty product, the importance of compliance of a device, which is designed and manufactured for electrical regulating application is prominent.

In addition to the self regulating quality and compliance principles, which are available to manufacturer of such products as part of the best manufacturing practice, it is becoming more apparent that independent third party verification is extremely important.

In adhering to the internationally recognized quality principles, where applicable, products manufactured by Synergy Energy Inc. bear the following Quality and Safety compliance markings:

CE Marking:

The CE marking (also known as CE mark) is a mandatory conformity mark on many products placed on the single market in the European Economic Area (EEA). The CE marking certifies that a product has met EU consumer safety, health or environmental requirements. Furthermore, CE marking is a declaration by the manufacturer that the product meets all the appropriate provisions of the relevant legislation implementing certain European Directives.

ETL Marking:

A product bearing the ETL Listed Mark is determined to have met the minimum requirements of prescribed product safety standards. Specifically, the mark indicates that the manufacturer's production site conforms to a range of compliance measures and is subject to periodic follow up inspections to verify continued conformance. The verification is conducted by an independent Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), such as Intertek, which is required to be recognized by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

UL Marking:

Underwriters Laboratories® Inc. (UL) is an independent product safety certification organization. A manufacturer of a UL-certified product must demonstrate compliance with the appropriate safety requirements, many of which are developed by UL. A manufacturer must also demonstrate that it has a program in place to ensure that each copy of the product complies with the appropriate requirements. UL conducts periodic, unannounced follow-up inspections at manufacturers' locations to check ongoing compliance.

Product Tracking Process:

In an effort to streamline the process of tracking a product from the initial point of sales to final shipment to the customer, Synergy Energy Inc. has developed a customized, unprecedented, and revolutionary Management Information System (MIS), which has been praised by both the quality verification bodies and its clients.

HS (Harmonic Solution) products are three-phase Isolation type, harmonic

mitigating transformers. HS is designed with small footprint, making it a great

replacement for Delta-Wye transformers.

HS is one of the most economical solutions for harmonic problems caused by

single-phase non-linear loads. HS is designed to handle K-20 load profile and is

capable of mitigating the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 15th harmonics at the system

level.

Harmonic mitigating capabilities of HS make it a facilitator for IEEE 519

conformity. HS meets the low Audible Noise levels of NEMA ST-20 and is

designed, manufactured, and tested in accordance to all applicable standards of

UL, CSA, IEEE, ANSI, and NEMA.

HS transformers are built with efficiency levels higher than what is required by NEMA TP-1 and CSA 802.2-06

standards and exceeds US DOE CSL-3 efficiency levels.. The efficiency level of HS line of products is third

party verified by Intertek, one of the most trusted test organizations in the world. HS products carry the Intertek

Efficiency Verification logo together with the related verification number. Similar to any other Synergy Energy

The HTT2 (Harmonic Treating Transformer with two outputs) is a highly

advanced dual output Isolation transformer with extraordinary harmonic

mitigating capabilities. The HTT2 mitigates all of the 3rd order harmonics

together with 5th and 7th harmonics in its windings. Phase shifting technology,

combined with low zero sequence impedance and balanced output impedances,

enables the HTT2 to efficiently and reliably mitigate the harmonics created by

nonlinear loads such as computers, monitors, printers, copiers, rectifiers, robots

and Variable Frequency Drives.

Each one of HTT2 outputs can feed a three phase, four wire panel and

simultaneously cancel their 5th and 7th harmonics against each other and

Although it is preferred to have equal loads on the two outputs (50 - 50) of the HTT2, for safety reasons, each one

of the outputs is designed to handle 60% of its nominal capacity as long as the total load on the transformer does

not exceed its rated capacity. For example, a 150 kVA HTT2 can deliver a total of 416 Amps on its 208 V outputs.

One output can be loaded up to 250 Amps as long as the load on the other output does not exceed 166 Amps.

The harmonic mitigating capability of the HTT2 makes it a great facilitator for of IEEE 519 conformity. HTT2

Before the electronic age, the most common cause of neutral current was the

unbalanced load on phases, but these days, even if the phases are completely

balanced, the neutral current still flows. The fact is, the neutral current in our

electrical systems is a byproduct of third order harmonics. It creates voltage

distortion, equipment malfunction, equipment failure, and downtime. The CTT is a three-phase four-wire harmonic mitigating and neutral current

reducing device. The CTT is designed for parallel installation in the electrical

systems. It traps the third order harmonics by creating a low impedance pathway.

The astonishing capability of the CTT becomes more evident when it is installed

in close proximity to the nonlinear loads or the electrical panels feeding them.

Reduction of neutral current and mitigation of third order harmonics reduce the heat produced in the transformer

upstream of the CTT, and as a result the available kVA of the transformer is increased.

The CTT's capability of reducing the voltage distortion facilitates conformity with IEEE 519. CCT products are

related according to their neutral current reduction capability; For example, a 60 Amp CTT can handle 60 Amp

of neutral current (20 Amp per phase). All connection points of CTT are accessible from the front of the unit. The standard version of CTT has a

maximum temperature rise of 130 °C. The finished product is shipped in a shrink-wrapped, gray NEMA 3R enclosure with corner protectors on our

The VFDS (Variable Frequency Drive Solution) is a harmonic mitigating device

designed specifically to mitigate 5th and 7th harmonics created by three phase

nonlinear loads such as Variable Frequency Drives. It is an efficient, reliable, and

long lasting electromagnetic based device. The VFDS takes advantage of phase shifting technology to mitigate the targeted

harmonics. Harmonics created by one source are canceled by the harmonics

from the other. Reduction of the 5th and 7th harmonics provides cleaner voltage

to the other equipment in the facility, reduces equipment malfunction and failure,

and is an important element of Power Factor.

Power Factor improvements result in increased energy efficiency, reduced

electricity bills, and will facilitate IEEE 519 compliance.

The VFDS is designed to be installed upstream of the nonlinear load and downstream of the Busbar or the

Riser (between the Busbar and the load).

All connection points of the VFDS are accessible from the front of the unit. The standard version of the VFDS

has a maximum temperature rise of 130 °C.

The finished product is shipped in a shrink-wrapped, gray NEMA 3R enclosure with corner protectors on our

HET (High Efficiency Transformer) products are specifically designed with Ultra

High Efficiency to reduce the operating cost of the facilities. HET is the ideal

transformer for supplying power to panels or equipment with high linear load

concentration.

HET is a three-phase isolation transformer and directly replaces a standard

Delta-Wye transformer to deliver one of the shortest periods on returning the

investment when used to feed their appropriate loads.

HET is designed with efficiency levels much higher than what is required by

NEMA TP-1 and CSA 802.2-06 standards and exceeds US DOE CSL-3

efficiency levels. HET efficiency is third party verified by Intertek, one of the most

trusted test organizations in the world. It also bears the Intertek logo for

efficiency together with the related verification number.

HET has 40% lower core loss than a standard Delta-Wye transformer. Core loss (or no-load loss) is the energy

that a transformer uses when it is energized regardless of the amount of load. This means that HET will pay for

itself many times over during its lifetime. HET is also in line with KYOTO accord requirements for reduction of

greenhouse gasses and carry one of the longest warranties in the business.

All the connection points of HET transformers are accessible from the front of the units and they accept a wide

variety of extra options. HET in its standard form has a maximum temperature rise of 130 °C with four primary

voltage taps (Two taps above and two taps bellow nominal).

HET.K (High Efficiency Transformer-K rated) products are three phase high

efficiency isolation transformers de-rated to the K-rating levels specified by UL.

Typical installation of HET.K would be where non-linear loads are present. The

required K-rating increases with increased amounts of Total Harmonic Distortion

(THD) in the electrical system.

HET.K products offer higher than what is required by NEMA TP-1 and CSA

802.2-06 standards and exceed US DOE CSL-3 efficiency levels.

The efficiency level of HET.K is third party verified by Intertek, one of the most

trusted test organizations in the world. It also bears the Intertek logo for

efficiency together with the related verification number.

The basic HET.K is K4 rated but optional rating of up to K40 is available.

The HEST (High Efficiency Single-phase Transformer) products provide efficient

power to single-phase loads.

The HEST is designed with two coils and is built to be higher than efficiency

levels of NEMA TP-1 and CSA 802.2-06 and exceed the US DOE CSL-3

standards. The HEST improves the overall efficiency of the facility and returns

the investment in a short period of time. The high efficiency levels of the HEST

will also have a direct impact on improving the Power Factor of the facility,

thereby, reducing the ROI.

Due to the fact that most single-phase transformers are installed outside of the

electrical rooms, close to the equipment and in polluted areas of the work place,

the rugged build of the HEST minimizes the scheduled maintenance intervals to

a minimum, thereby improving the bottom-line.

The efficiency of the HEST is third party verified by Intertek, one of the most trusted test organizations in the

world. It also bears the Intertek logo for high efficiency compliance, together with the related verification number.

All of the connection points of HEST transformers are accessible from the front of the units. They also accept a

wide variety of extra options. The HEST in its standard form has a maximum temperature rise of 150 °C.

The CTT.A is the most economical solution that supplies the most undisturbed

power to the related equipment or area. It is a three phase autotransformer with

natural convection of air as the cooling method.

The CTT.A is designed with low loss core material that results in dramatic drop of

the inrush current. The inrush current of CTT.A is typically between four to six

times its rated primary current. Although autotransformers are not regulated to

meet certain efficiency levels or standards, but Synergy Energy Inc.; as one of

the pioneers of high efficiency dry-type transformers; continues to raise the bar

for all transformer manufacturers in improving their products and designing transformers with lower loss and

higher efficiency. The CTT.A is a perfect example, as the core steel used in its production is of special design;

grain oriented and annealed to provide a high flux density and improve the efficiency.

When compared to a regular autotransformer, the CTT.A offers 30% less no-load losses which puts it amongst

the most efficient products in the industry and a very low period for returning the original investment. Another

advantage of the CTT.A is its small footprint which makes it installation in confined spaces possible. This is

usually the case with imported equipment that require a different operating voltage.

The CTT.A design configuration allows for having a neutral connection point. Therefore, CTT.A can

accommodate any electrical system with 3 phase; 3 wire or 3 phase; four wire on its primary and/or secondary

side. All of the connection points of the CTT.A can be accessed through its removable front panel. It is capable

of accepting a wide variety of additional options.

The CTT.A in its standard form has a maximum temperature rise of 150 °C.

The finished product is shipped in a shrink-wrapped, gray NEMA 3R enclosure with corner protectors on our

unique SmartSkid®, for safe and effortless transportation and installation. For more information about

SmartSkid® and its advantages, please refer to the SmartSkid® section of the catalogue.

As an enviornmnet friendly concept, SmartSkid® utilizes 60% less wood compare to a conventional skid.

®

Environmental Friendly:

By adding only 3" to the depth and 7" to width of the overall dimensions of an enclosure, SmartSkid® is conceptualized to minimize the shipping envelope of a transformer, which in turn minimizes the freight cost.

Lower Freight Cost:

In order to provide the best protection for the most vulnerable sides of the transformer enclosure during transportation, SmartSkid® is designed to take advantage of the maximum lumber strength.

Better Protection in Transit:

Due to lighter structeral design, where only a pallet jack is suffecient for lowering the Transformer with SmartSkid®, the need for utilizing a heavy equipment is eliminated. This unique fature improves the worker's safe by substantial margin.

Safe and Convenient:

Unlike conventional skids, transformer on SmartSkid® may be easily positioned on its installation spot in minutes. According to the conducted studies, depending on the size of the transformer on a conventional skid, SmartSkid will reduce the installation time by 20% to 55%.

Shorter Installation Time:

Regardless of the kVA rating of the transformer, the heavy gauge supporting brackets and their related hardware, which are used to attach the SmartSkid to the enclosure, may be utilized as depicted to suspend the transformer from the ceiling.Note: Threaded rods for ceiling mount are not supplied with the transformer.

Installation Flexibility:

At Synergy Energy Inc., strives for continual improvement along with invaluable customers' feedbacks inspired the design of innovative, unparalleled, and flexible SmartSkid®:

With its versatile and multi-functional design aspects, the revolutionary and unparallel SmartSkid® is to furnish you with the following features and benefits:

EasySkid Brackets are integrated part of the SmartSkid® and are accessible by removing the wooden frame.

EasySkid Brackets may be removed and re-attached to the side of the transformer for ceiling mount purpose.

In conjunction with threaded rods, re-configured EasySkid Brackets may be then utilized to facilitate ceiling mount of the transformer.
