1 Introduction Rational Synergy customers in Asia have expressed the need for Synergy to support different encodings for the same source file, when projected to different work areas. The main impetus behind this requirement is that customers with Japanese characters in their source files wish to edit these source files both on Windows and on UNIX. The Japanese system encoding on Windows is typically Shift-JIS, while the encoding on UNIX is typically EUC.

Synergy supports different encodings of the same file on Windows and UNIX. This document describes this feature and the possible translations.

2 Terms and Concepts A character encoding , also referred to as simply an encoding , is a mapping from a set of characters to sequences of code units, represented typically as 8-bit, 16-bit, or 32-bit values. Examples of encodings are 7-bit ASCII, which can be used to represent characters used in English; Latin1, which is used to represent characters in most Western European languages; and Shift-JIS, which is used to represent Japanese characters.

3 Feature Description Each object type in a Synergy database has an optional property that allows specification of three encodings:

• A server encoding This encoding is used for source files in the database cache and archive directories. Note that because of the nature of UNIX link-based work areas, this is also the encoding of files that a user accesses through links in such a work area.

• A Windows work area encoding This encoding is used for source files in a Windows work area, or anywhere else that the Synergy Windows client might access or create user-accessible files.

• A UNIX work area encoding This encoding is used for source files in a UNIX copy-based work area, or anywhere else that the Synergy UNIX client might access or create user-accessible files. Files in a UNIX link-based work area that are referenced through links are assumed to be in the server encoding. However, when a new file is brought into the database from a regular file in the work area, either through the synchronize operation or the create operation, encoding translation will occur as the file is copied from the work area to the database.

Synergy performs optional encoding conversions when a file is copied from the client to the server or from the server to the client. These conversions are described in more detail below, under Encoding Rules.

There is a main switch that allows enabling and disabling the entire encoding conversions feature, for a database.

Only text files, that is, files in the type hierarchy with a root of ascii, are affected by this feature.

It is possible to specify an encoding for an individual object, overriding the server encoding setting on its type.

If a type has no encoding rules specified, no translations occur and the feature is turned off for objects of that type.

DCM preserves an object's source file contents, with no new conversions. However, information related to the object's encoding is included in a DCM package. This is discussed in more detail below, under DCM.

No special interface is provided for modifying or viewing the attributes needed to use this feature. Users must use the standard ccm attr command.

3.1 Encoding Conversions The Boolean attribute, encoding_conversions , on the model object, controls whether the encoding translation feature (also referred to as the multiple-encoding feature) is enabled in the database. If this attribute exists and has a value of TRUE, the multiple-encoding feature is enabled for the database. If this attribute does not exist, or has a value of FALSE, this feature is disabled for the database.

By default in a new database, the encoding_conversions attribute exists with a value of FALSE, so work area encoding conversions are turned off.

The behavior described in the remainder of this section applies only if the multiple-encoding feature is enabled for the database.

The encoding_conversions attribute is preserved on model install. This means that a customer's setting does change when a database is upgraded.

3.2 Encoding Rules The optional text attribute, encoding_rules , on an object type (the cvtype), controls how encoding translations are done on objects of that type.

This attribute specifies encoding translations that are to occur when files are copied between the client and the server.

3.2.1 Syntax The encoding_rules attribute has the following syntax:

Server-encoding: encoding [Unix-wa-encoding: encoding ] [Windows-wa-encoding: encoding ]

The square brackets around the second and third lines are not part of the syntax, but indicate that specification of either the UNIX work area encoding or the Windows work area encoding is optional.

An encoding_rules attribute that is blank (i.e., the empty string), or that consists of just white space is equivalent to the absence of an encoding_rules attribute.

The value of the encoding_rules attribute may alternatively be the special string "no translation", in any case.

White space is allowed and ignored anywhere in the encoding_rules attribute.

The keywords, Server-encoding, Unix-wa-encoding, and Windows-wa-encoding are case insensitive, and thus can be written in any case.

An encoding is the name of a character encoding, as recognized by Synergy. Synergy recognizes encodings supported by the embedded Java 6 Runtime Environment. These supported encodings are listed in the Appendix. Note that the names of the encodings are case sensitive.

3.2.2 Behavior If an encoding_rules attribute does not exist on an object's type, or any types up its type hierarchy, then no translation on that object occurs.

If an encoding_rules attribute does exist on an object's type, or any types up its type hierarchy, standard inheritance rules apply.

Henceforth in this document, when a type's encoding_rules attribute is mentioned, it refers to this attribute on the type, if it exists, and if it does not exist, then the inherited attribute from the supertype, if it exists.

If an object has an encoding_rules attribute on it, this local encoding_rules attribute is ignored, and the object behaves according the encoding_rules attribute, or lack thereof, on its type. In other words, object-specific encoding rules are not supported. See also Object Encoding.

The encoding_rules attribute only applies the Synergy ascii type or any subtypes in its hierarchy. If the attribute exists on any other types, it is ignored.

The encoding_rules attribute is ignored by objects with a handle_source_as attribute with value binary, even if the object's type is ascii or a subtype in the ascii hierarchy. This is to avoid incorrect translation on an executable that the user accidentally migrated in with an ascii type.

Note that this means that this feature does not work for some encodings. For example, files in UTF-16 or UTF-32 (or any encoding that uses the "non-printable" bytes that Synergy looks for to tag the object as binary) will almost certainly be classified as binary, and therefore never translated.

If the encoding_rules attribute specifies all three encodings, it implies the following behavior:

• Any regular files in a work area are assumed to be in the work area encoding specified for the platform on which the client is running (i.e., Unix-wa-encoding or Windows-wa-encoding).

• No check is done to verify that the file is in fact in this encoding.

• When a file is copied from a copy-based work area to the cache, it is automatically translated from the assumed work area encoding, as specified in the encoding_rules attribute, to the server encoding, also as specified in the encoding_rules attribute. This means that the cache file contains this translation of the work area file. Note that this does not apply to link-based work areas, where no translation takes place.

For example, work area to server translation occurs on Synchronize, when the database is updated from the work area; and Create, when the file preexists in the

work area. More generally, the above translation occurs any time a file is copied from the client to the server, and used as the contents of the source attribute of a file in the Synergy ascii type hierarchy. This includes Migrate; Merge; and any explicit or implicit synchronizations from the work area to the database, as might occur on check in or edit through the GUI.

• Any time a file is copied from the server to the client, the reverse translation occurs, from the server encoding to the specified work area encoding. Examples include Check Out, Synchronize, Edit, View, Merge, and Compare.

• If an object has a server_encoding attribute that is different from the server encoding of its type, this encoding overrides the server encoding of the type when translation is performed. For example, if the Java type has a server encoding of EUC and a Windows client encoding of Shift-JIS, but the object has a server_encoding attribute of Shift-JIS, then no translation occurs when the cache file is copied to a Windows work area.

• On copies to and from a work area, this encoding translation occurs in addition to any necessary new line translations, as defined on the work area. Note that in cases where a work area is not involved, no new line translation is done, but encoding translation is done.

If either the Unix-wa-encoding or the Windows-wa-encoding is not specified for a given type, no translation is done on any copy in either direction, when the client is running on the platform of the work area encoding that is not specified. Objects of that type are assumed to be in the specified server encoding.

If the encoding_rules attribute consists of just the special string “no translation” (in any case), then no translations are done on objects of that type and no encodings are assumed. Although this is semantically equivalent to the absence of an encoding_rules attribute, it provides a way to explicitly record this setting on the type.

The Server-encoding part of the encoding_rules attribute dictates what is assumed to be the server encoding, and controls what the two work area encodings are translated to and from.

In a DCM-enabled database, foreign objects, whose types in the local database have an encoding_rules attribute, but which themselves do not have a server_encoding attribute, are treated in the same way as are local objects without a server_encoding attribute; namely, the server encoding is assumed to be the server encoding specified on the local type.

Note that this means that database administrators should either ensure that a given type has the same server encoding across the DCM cluster, or manually add a server_encoding attribute to any objects that are to be replicated to another database, or do both.

Also note that it might be prudent to add the server_encoding attribute to objects in their controlling database, even if that database release is older than Synergy 7.2, if DCM between that database and a 7.2 database with this feature enabled is to occur.

3.3 Object Encoding Each object that is of type ascii, or of a subtype in its hierarchy, may have an optional string attribute called server_encoding .

If an object has a server_encoding attribute, this attribute overrides the server encoding specified in the encoding_rules attribute on the object's type.

An object's server_encoding attribute is automatically set on object creation as follows:

• If the object's type has an encoding_rules attribute, and the value of this attribute is not “no translation”, then its server_encoding attribute is automatically set to the specified server encoding.

• If the object's type has an encoding_rules attribute, and the value of this attribute is “no translation”, then its server_encoding attribute is automatically set to “no translation”.

• If the object's type does not have an encoding_rules attribute, then no server_encoding attribute is set on the object. Note that this allows an encoding to be added to the object's type in the future, and this new encoding will then be assumed for this object.

• These rules do not apply to an object created during import or DCM receive. Rules for import and DCM receive are provided below, under DCM.

An object's server_encoding attribute is copied from its predecessor on derive.

If an object does not have a server_encoding attribute, it is assumed to be in the server encoding of its type. This is for backward compatibility, for objects that were created before this feature existed, or before the object's type had encoding information specified.

When a server encoding is specified for a type, if any existing objects, static or non-static, have a different encoding, or no encoding, it is the responsibility of the admin user to set the server_encoding attribute on such objects, if necessary.

Translation is only supported between two encodings for the same language (i.e., eucJP and SJIS) or between any encoding and UTF-8.

3.4 DCM DCM generate does not perform any translations on source files, except for the translation that it already performs from Windows to UNIX newlines. In other words, the source for exported objects is handled the same as it without encoding translations turned on.

Similarly, DCM receive does not perform any extra translations on source files.

However, the following special rule applies to objects created during a DCM receive or an import:

• DCM skips the normal creation of a server_encoding attribute that takes place when an object is created. The only server_encoding attribute that is created is the one from the object's import/export format, if any, thus preserving the original server encoding for that specific object.

Remember that each object of a type with encoding rules may have a server encoding stored on it, in the server_encoding attribute. Thus, in a database in a DCM cluster, if a user wants foreign objects to be properly copied to his work area, the computer where he is running his Synergy client session must have the ability to translate from the server encoding, which is preserved on the object from the original database, to the work area encoding for the object’s type in the target database.

3.5 UNIX Clients and Link-Based Work Areas For users of link-based work areas to see files in the specified UNIX work area encoding, the server encoding of the types of these files must match the UNIX work area encoding. It is the responsibility of the admin user to ensure this.

If a file is DCM transferred from a Windows database to a UNIX database, and the UNIX database needs to support link-based work areas, then it is the responsibility of the admin user to make sure that not only is the server encoding in the UNIX database the same as the UNIX work area encoding, but also the server encoding in the Windows database is the same as those encodings in the UNIX database. Note that this imposes a cost in the Windows database, when files are translated as they are copied between the server and the work area.

More generally, to support link-based work areas in a DCM cluster, all databases in the cluster must have the same server encoding, and UNIX databases in that cluster must have a work area encoding that is the same as this common server encoding. In other words, you cannot have a Japanese and a Chinese database both using link-based UNIX work areas, and exchanging files in their own natural encodings.

If a database or cluster does not follow the convention of a common server encoding and UNIX work area encoding, then customers might want to disallow users from creating link-based work areas. There is no formal product support for disallowing link-based work areas; this is something that must be enforced by a site policy.

3.6 Error Handling If the encoding_rules attribute is created with a syntax error, this is detected when the attribute is saved, and an error message is prominently displayed to the user.

If such an error is not corrected, objects of this type behave as if the type had no encoding_rules attribute, and a warning message is displayed when a file of this type is copied between the client and the server.

It is possible for a file translation to fail. Failure can be due to at least three reasons:

• The specified encoding cannot be found.

• One or more characters being read are not valid in the source encoding (probably meaning the user has specified the wrong encoding when the file was created).

• One or more characters cannot be translated to the target encoding (probably because the user is trying to translate to a different language, and the target language cannot represent the source characters).

There is no need to distinguish these cases; all such errors are treated in the same way.

Failure during a file translation is treated in the same way as any other failure that might occur during any file copy between the Synergy client and server. This implies the following:

• A warning message is always displayed to the user.

• Any operation that fails to update a database file, such as check in, itself fails.

• Any operation that fails to update a file on the client side succeeds, with the following exceptions:

Page 9: Synergy 7.2: Encoding Translations · files that a user accesses through links in such a work area. • A Windows work area encoding ... Check Out, Synchronize, Edit, View, Merge,

Synergy 7.2: Encoding Translations

Page 9 of 35 “Rational Support Whitepaper”

• Operations fail if their purpose is to specifically update a client-side file, such as "Discard work area changes".

• Operations fail if they depend on the correct file contents being copied to the client side, such as Merge.

Examples of operations that succeed, even if copies to the client side fail, are Use, Update, and DCM Receive.

Those operations that fail cause bulk operations that include them to fail as well. Such bulk operations list any failed file copies at the end.

3.7 Methodology When using the file encodings feature, the following guidelines are useful.

When an encoding_rules attribute is set for a type, the administrator can retroactively create a server_encoding attribute for all locally controlled objects of that type, especially when DCM is enabled for that database. The administrator can find all locally controlled existing objects of type mytype in a DCM-enabled database with database id dbid , that don't have an encoding attribute, with the following query: % ccm query "cvtype=' mytype ' and not has_attr('encoding') and (has_attr('modifiable_in') and modifiable_in=' dbid' or created_in=' dbid ')"

To set the server_encoding attribute, use the ccm attr command, in the ccm_admin role.

Note that not all existing objects of a type should necessarily be assigned the same encoding. If objects have been checked in with different encodings, the administrator needs to know this and set the encodings appropriately.

If this step is skipped, all existing objects are assumed to be of the encoding specified in the Server-encoding part of the encoding_rules for the object's type. If two databases in a DCM cluster specify a different server encoding for the same type, and an object without an explicitly specified server_encoding is replicated, a different server encoding is assumed for that object in each database, which is almost certainly wrong.

Before setting the encoding_rules attribute on a type, all users in the database should synchronize their work areas on existing projects, and reconcile all conflicts. This is necessary if the encoding_rules specify a different work area encoding than what is currently used in the work areas, since the conflicts must first be resolved before the new work area encoding is assumed.

After setting the encoding_rules attribute on a type, it might be necessary to delete and resynchronize all work areas using files of that type. This is necessary if the encoding rules specify a different work area encoding.

When using link-based work areas, customers should ensure that any types that are used for members of those projects must have the same server encoding and UNIX work area encoding. If the database is in a DCM cluster, then this same encoding must apply to all databases in the cluster.

UNIX users in a database where the server encoding is different from the UNIX work area encoding should not use link-based work areas.

Page 10: Synergy 7.2: Encoding Translations · files that a user accesses through links in such a work area. • A Windows work area encoding ... Check Out, Synchronize, Edit, View, Merge,

Synergy 7.2: Encoding Translations

Page 10 of 35 “Rational Support Whitepaper”

Once the file encodings feature is enabled for a database, or the encoding rules are enabled for a type, and objects are created in the database for such a type, great care must be taken if the administrator later decides to turn the feature off. At the least, all affected work areas should be deleted and resynchronized.

If the customer uses an encoding such as UTF-16 or UTF-32 for some types, where characters frequently contain bytes that Synergy considers to be binary, then this feature cannot be used for those types.

3.8 Using the feature Set the encoding_rules attributes on your types before using this feature. Doing so sets the presumed encoding of the source for each object of the corresponding types. If any of these objects is in a different encoding, it is the responsibility of the admin user to add a server_encoding attribute to each such object.

There is a preserved_type_attrs attribute on the model object, and model install treats this the same way it treats preserved_model_attrs on the model. The encoding_rules attribute is listed in the preserved_type_attrs attribute. This prevents upgrades from overwriting the encoding_rules attributes.

The encoding_conversions attribute is also preserved on upgrade. This means that this attribute is listed in the preserved_model_attrs attribute on the model object.

The preserved_type_attrs model attribute is itself preserved. This means that this attribute is listed in the preserved_model_attrs attribute on the model object.
