The(SYNAPSE(Difference(

Since its inception in 2010, SYNAPSE has served as the University of Pennsylvania's only multidisciplinary student-run healthcare publication. Our readership consists of the entire four-year undergraduate student body at Penn; we pride ourselves on providing a multi-dimensional view and focus on all current issues in healthcare ranging from medical research to health care economics and ethics.

This year our writers have researched for articles ranging from mandatory genome

screenings to the impact of proper healthcare facilities in prisons. The scope and breadth of their work is shown through their hard work throughout the semester. Our editing process includes a selective abstract screening, after which our recruited writers have the opportunity to work one-on-one with our associate editors in refining their article ideas and producing quality article drafts. The end of the process entails a review by our editorial board and a resulting comprehensive, professional article by the student at semester’s end.

As part of our ongoing commitment to healthcare education, SYNAPSE also collaborates with numerous student organizations in organizing speaker events and seminars related to healthcare. At the end of every semester, we host our flagship Launch Event, where we showcase our newly-published issue for the semester, following a keynote speech from a notable thought leader in the field.

Our keynote speakers range from top professors at renowned medical schools to

corporate executives in healthcare technology and pharmaceutical companies. Past speakers in recent history have included Dr. Laura Bessen, Vice President of U.S. Medical at Bristol Meyers-Squibb, Dr. J. Larry Jameson, Dean of the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, and Dr. P. SYNAPSE maintains a very close relationship with local healthcare startups, pharmaceutical companies and renowned medical institutions in providing accessibility for members interested in careers in the robust field that is healthcare. In addition to having access to a wealth of information from senior advisory board members representing esteemed professorships in the University of Pennsylvania’s Life Science and Medicine departments to international healthcare publications as Nature, students are also able to participate in monthly luncheons, where invited professionals from the healthcare sphere describe their experiences at work and provide our members with a valuable insight into possible future careers.
