2. What is RSV?
Respiratory syncytial virus or RSV causes most children to develop a cold. Most children will catch RSV by age 2.
3. What is RSV?
In Babies bornprematurely or with certain lung and heart conditions, RSVcan lead to pneumonia, and bronchiolitis. RSVis the #1 reason babies under 12months old in the US get hospitalized.
4. RSV Epidemiology
Inmost parts of the country, the RSV season runs from fall into spring, but can occur at different times each year.
The CDC will track the virology each year and physicians continue to check for changesseason to season.
5. RSV TRANSMISSION
Transmitted by droplets, large particles, and fomites
RSV survives up to 6 hours on stethoscopes, andup to 12 hours on hard, nonporous surfaces.
Over 50% of medical personnel infected when RSV is prevalent in the community
Nosocomial infection remains to be a serious problem
6. Synagis: Mechanism of Action
It is a monoclonal antibody that provides the specific antibodies that premature infants lack to help fight off RSV Disease
Blocks fusion of infected host cells (synctial formation)
Reduces viral infectivity and cell to cell transmission of the virus

8. How Synagis is Supplied
Synagis is supplied in single dose vials as a preservative free , solution at 100mg/ml in 0.5ml and 1.0 ml , containing either 50mg or 100mg respectively, for IM injection. It is ready to use, no longer requires any prep
Upon receipt, Synagis should be stored 35.6 and 46.4 F in it original container
Do not, freeze, or shakevial or use beyond exp date.
9. SynagisAdministration
Synagis should be administered in a dose of 15mg/Kg IM using 25 gauge 5/8 inch syringe in the anterolateral aspect of the thigh

  • The dose per month = patient weight (kg) x 15mg 100mg/ml of synagis

10. Injection volume over 1ml should be given as adivided dose
