SYMBOLSANG PAGLILITIS NI MANG SERAPIO
”
“masks and make-ups
As people, we often (or always) wear masks…On the TV and media, politicians and public figures are nothing but actors or clowns that they’re good enough to have make-ups and masks on their faces.
In this Serapio play, the characters have make-ups/masks for this very reason.
Mang Serapio (the character himself) does not have a make-up on his face because he is bare, he is common, he has nothing much to hide.

“Pulubi and Federacion
Basically means…
Filipinos andPhilippines
PULUBI AT FEDERACION…
Paul Dumol/Original Version
• “Pulubi” are the people or simply beggars who are part/members of the “Federacion”, or the organization of beggars; which is run by the beggars, for the beggars.
• The pulubis are also called as “kasapi” since they are members of this organization.
• Pulubis are depicted to be beggars, simply put.
THIS own version
• “Pulubi” is the other term for Filipinos, and “Federacion” being the Philippines.
• The pulubis are known to be “pulubis” by nationality; and their country known to be the “Bansang Federacion”, or “The Pearl of the Orient Seas”.
• Pulubis are depicted to be regular people: accountants, doctors/psychologists, engineers, nurses, farmers, laborers, you, me, your friends, etc.
• “Federacion” can mean both the country, and the “government”, depending on the context/usage.
PERA AT BUWIS
Paul Dumol/Original Version
• Pulubis/beggars are obliged to give money, a sum of Php40.00 PER DAY to the Federacion.
This OWN version
• Pulubis are obliged to pay their TAXES—specifically their ITR (Income Tax Return), and right down to E-VATs, insurances, memorial plans, and their souls (figuratively).
BANDILA NG FEDERACION
• BLUE – symbolizes contentment
• RED – symbolizes power and righteousness
• YELLOW – symbolizes gold and wealth
• WHITE DIAMOND – symbolizes the societal class of the “pulubis”
• THREE SUNS – symbolizes the three main islands of the Federacion country
• “F” WITH TRIANGLE – symbolizes the economy
INSTRUMENTS/TOOLS TO BE USED FOR PUNISHMENT
• Composed of: hammer, scissors, fork, bamboo, dagger, icepick.
• Basically the tools to be used for pagbulag/blinding, pagpipi/muting, pagpilay/fracturing.
• Basically the punishment implies to shut a pulubi up, should he/she does anything that goes above the laws made by the Federacion.
LAWS OF FEDERACION
• Simply symbolizes the laws specifically in this “Federacion country”, which these laws are made to favour the officials, the rich and the powerful.
JANET
• An “original character”, which means this character is not found or part in the original Mang Serapio drama of Paul Dumol.
• Simply, she symbolizes… NAPOLES. • BUT, since this certain character doesn’t have a surname in this
drama, she also might as well represent or symbolize any other politicians or figures leeching in the government.
BASURA
• Garbages found on the stage’s setting are BOOKS.
• Books (your textbooks, encyclopedias, dictionaries, etc) symbolize EVERY KNOWLEDGE you have, which, as long as you’re here in the Philippines, means nothing. AT ALL.
“SOL”
• Serapio’s daughter, and is about the most significant element of this drama…
• Remember that Serapio was trialed all because of “Sol”, his daughter, his child.
SERAPIO
• He symbolizes US. TAYO. PILIPINO.• HE IS US, AND WE ARE SERAPIO.
• That’s all for the symbolisms. Thank you for listening…hopefully it didn’t shatter your perceptions of reality.
