Symbolism, Allegory, Fable, and Satire Symbolism Symbol often an ordinary object, event, person, or animal to which we attach extraordinary meaning and significance A flag, a rose, an eagle, a skull Public symbols symbols that always stand for the same thing; owl for wisdom, heart for love Some symbols have meaning only to the story in which they belong; - mockingjay has no meaning outside of hunger games Allegory Allegory a story in which characters, settings, and actions stand for something beyond themselves Can be read on a literal and a metaphorical level Fable Fable short story with a clear moral or message. Animals stand for human archetypes.
