Most o the 983091983093 abilities are related to combat Some makesit possible or the 983120983107 to attack or deend with other attributesbesides Accurate or Defense For instance the novice levelin the ability Iron Fist lets you roll the attack dice against

the 983120983107s Strong when engaged in melee and the ability SixthSense lets you attack with Vigilant (instead o Accurate) whenusing ranged weapons Others let you deal more damage(eg Berserker Natural Warrior) pin down enemies (egSharpshooter) avoid opportunity attacks when passing byan opponent (eg Acrobatics Equestrian) or lower the enemyrsquosdeense or armor value (eg Two-Handed Force)

Some o the combat abilities can be used or other kindso challenges ( Acrobatics may let you climb a wall withoutrolling the dice) but there are also abilities that have littleor nothing to do with fighting Depending on your levelthe Scholar ability gives you social and arcane knowledge

as well as the ability to read and communicate on otherlanguages Medicus lets you treat and investigate woundsdisease Alchemy lets you produce and understand toxinsand other elixirs You will also have access to the ability

Adding to this a re the qualities A one-handed weapontypically does 983089983108983096 in damage but the Raven Axe has thequality Deep-Reaching giving it +983089 in damage and (sadly)also making it five times as expensive Other qualities makethe weapon easier to hit with (Precise) boosts the deensevalue (Balanced) or awards its ca rrier an opportunity attackwhen entering into melee (Long)

Armors always have the Quality I mpeding reducingthe deense value o the one wearing it (easier to hit butwithstands more damage) But that can to some extent becounteracted with the quality Flexible (less hindering butmuch more expensive)

In other words starting with a basic damagearmor valueand adding positive or negative (eg Blunt or Cumbersome)

qualities you can easily design and mimic any kind o specificweapon and armor

So hellip My 983120983107 is a low-born noble and some type o comman-der I take a look at the archetypes and find the occupationsCaptain and Knight The ormer one seems most in line withmy intentions so I take a minute to ponder its suggestionsconcerning attributes and abilities It says that Persuasiveshould be my strongest attribute and that I should considerthe abilities Dominate Leader Armor Proficienc y and Shield Fighter The Dominate ability catches my eye hellip

The novice level o the Dominate ability makes it possibleor the 983120983107 to use the attribute Persuasive instead o Accurate when attacking in melee In addition the adept level givesthe 983120983107 a cha nce to make an enemy hesitate and look or someother target to attack I kind o like t hat picturing my 983120983107 asthe stern and confident warrior who silently dominates thebattlefield just by staring down his enemies Obviously thismeans that I need to assign a high value to Persuasive so Iturn to the attributes beore selecting the other abilities

As or mystical traditions and powers I can skip that ormy 983120983107 and the same goes or corruption Sure the abilityWitchsight costs 983089983108983092 temporary corruption to use ndash orcingthe shadowplane to reveal its secrets is not done without

risk But there is no cost in permanent corruption to learnit so letrsquos instead turn to the weapons and armor section

First we need to have a basic understanding o the combatmechanics Basically when aced with a challenge in thegame world the player must roll a 983108983090983088 In order to overcomethe challenge the dice must land on a figure which is equalto or lower than the player characterrsquos value in one o theattributes For instance i the character tries to do somethingwhich requires him to be quiet or cautious the attributeDiscreet is used i he searches or something or is on hisguard then Vigilant is the act ive attribute

However there are two aspects that add to the complexityFirst the Abilities which represent the particular skills o

a player character The abilities sometimes open up or theplayer to use another attribute than the one which seemsnatural in a certa in situation In the case o my dear Edogaithe ability Dominate lets him attack with Persuasive insteado Accurate when in melee Another character mastering theability Iron Fist would roll against Strong and so on

The other aspect has to do with the act that ma ny chal-lenges become easier or harder depending on who or whatthe character interacts with Sneaking past a guard is orinstance easier or harder depending on how Vigilant theguard is And to hit an enemy with a sword can be moreor less difficult depending on how Quick the opponent is

Rule-wise this is achieved by modiying the value that theplayer must roll against most ofen in a way which directlyrelates to some attribute value o the opponent In concreteterms I the aorementioned guard has the mediocre valueo 983089983088 in Vigilant no modification is made (plusmn983088) i the guardis very absentminded and only has 983093 in Vigilant the playergets to add 983093 (+983093) to the attribute he must roll against andshould the guard be so watchul that he has 983089983093 in Vigilant theplayer must subtract 983093 (minus983093) rom the value he needs to rollunder with the 983108983090983088

Because o the latter the stats o the jakaar Edogai is acingare displayed like this having modifiers tied to the attributesand also fixed values or weapons and armor

Edogai has time to draw his sword beore the jakaar makesits move He also activates his Witchsight to find out i the jakaar is blight-stricken and thereby more dangerous thanyour ordinary beast The 983143983149 tells me (the player) that I mustroll against Vigilant modified by minus983089 (the enemyrsquos Discreet) tobe able to read the shadow I grab the 983108983090983088 and hope to rollequal to or under 983089983088 [Vigilant 983089983089 modified by minus983089] The dicelands on a 983095 The 983143983149 says that according to my reading thecreature is without taint and then he reminds me to roll a983108983092 to determine how much the reading corrupts Edogai I rolla 983090 and make a note o that on the character sheet next toTemporary Corruption

When the jakaar lunches orward we first determine t heorder o initiative based on the attribute Quick The wol beasthas 983089983093 Edogai 983089983088 so the jakaar gets to attack fi rst

The 983143983149 tells me to roll a 983108983090983088 or Defense modified by thewolrsquos Accurate which is minus983091 Hence I must roll 983093 or lower to avoidbeing bit [Deense 983096 modified by minus983091] The dice lands on a 983095 and the

jakaar bites down on me But I can still avoid being damagedThe 983143983149 tells me that the bite does 983092 in da mage I grab my

armor dice (983108983096) and roll a 983091 One o the wol angs penetratesmy scale mail but the injury is not that bad (983092minus983091=983089) I makea note o the damage received on my character sheet thenit is Edogairsquos time to retaliate

The 983143983149 inorms me that the enemy has minus983093 in Defense butat first I ignore that and tries to dominate the beast Thatrequires me to make a successul roll against Persuasive modified by the opponents Resolute [Persuasive 983089983093 modifiedby Resolute +983089 = 983089983094] I roll a 983092 and the poor wol will not beable to attack during the u983120983107oming turn Now letrsquos attack

To hit I must roll equal to or under 983089983089 [Persuasive 983089983093 andPrecise weapon +983089 modified by Deense minus983093 = 983089983089] The Sun God Priossmiles at Edogai and the dice lands on a 983097 My 983143983149 mumblesa curse beore telling me that the jakaa rrsquos armor value is 983090I roll a 983108983096 to determine the damage a 983093

The jakaar takes 983091 points in damage and the second turno the combat scene begins The lone beast is overwhelmedby my presence and cannot attack Instead it turns aroundto escape The 983143983149 tells me that I can make an opportunityattack when the enemy is leaving melee but or some reasonI decide not to Afer a ll I am a man o honor not some lowliewho stabs wounded animals in the back
