Why a National Research Programme?
The researchers are scattered through the French territory and they belong to different institutions.
During restoration, study for The Sleep by Rodin, 19th century,
terracotta, plaster, paper, waxes Paris, Musée Rodin
Therefore, their works are sometimes difficult to identify.
The works in this field needs interdisciplinary research which is not always recognised and well evaluated by their research national bodies.
7th European Conference Sauveur, Safeguarded Cultural Heritage, Prague 31May-3 June 2006
The research in the field of Sciences and Conservation of Cultural Heritage faces many handicaps
Consequently, in 2003, the French Ministry of Culture has decided to create a national programme in order to:
- give a better legibility to research in the field of conservation,
- promote a new synergy between researchers,
- help technological transfers and innovation activities.
7th European Conference Sauveur, Safeguarded Cultural Heritage, Prague 31May-3 June 2006
Annual funding set aside for research projects:In 2003 - 2004 : 260 k€In 2005 - 2006 : 300 k€
Six projects selected each year by a scientific committee and a steering committee
1- Fundamental knowledge on materials of the Cultural Heritage,
Four main topics in the call for research projects:
2- Impact of the environment on weathering and conservation of Cultural Heritage,
3- Interpretation of weathering processes and settling of specifications for interventions,
4- Research in conservation-restoration.

RESULTS
Main results of the Programme
- These results confirm the interest of French scientists in the field of conservation
7th European Conference Sauveur, Safeguarded Cultural Heritage, Prague 31May-3 June 2006
- The scientific level of the proposals has increased
- The program is now well identified and new teams apply to the call
- A better identification of the research teams is now possible
- The French network in the field of conservation is reinforced by a better legibility of research teams
• Organisation of an international conference at the end of 2007 to present the results of the four calls
• Publications of the results in journals for end-users such as conservator-restorers, architects, curators, etc. at a national and international level
• On-line information on the Web site of the MCChttp://www.culture.gouv.fr/culture/conservation/fr/comite/comite.htm
