Hit and run on fence leaves owner questioning nearby crosswalk
The fi rst knock came shortly after 1 p.m on Thursday afternoon. Although Bryna Boisvert
had not heard anything unusual happen, a wit-ness reported they had watched a female driv-er in a small silver car with many bumper stick-ers crash through the
HIT AND RUN - Late last week a vehicle struck the fence surrounding a local home and fl ed the scene following the incident. Photo submitted

fence surrounding her home located across from the Bethany Senior Care Centre on 47 Ave.
A second witness report-ed they had been cross-ing the street and the ve-hicle did not see them. Having been driving what seemed to the witness to be ‘a little too fast’, the driver of the vehicle opted to not hit the pedestrian and instead swerved to the right and blew right through Boisvert’s fence. The driver proceeded to reverse and fl ee the scene.
“I’m a pretty easy going person, had they come to my door and explained what happened I would have been much less upset but the fact they took off really upsets me,”
said Boisvert during an interview with Sylvan Lake News. “The intersec-tion is terrible - people park on both sides and it is very hard to see pe-destrians - I’ve heard a lot of brakes go on there over the ten years I’ve lived here. Flashing lights would be a huge help at that intersection.”
“Ultimately I’m just thankful that the pedes-trian wasn’t hurt and that my children weren’t play-ing behind the fence.”
Attending offi cer for the Sylvan Lake RCMP stated the biggest issue on 47 Ave. is speed, acknowl-edging pedestrians must take some responsibility on the road and ensure drivers see them.
“The investigation is ongoing and it’s diffi cult to say what will be hap-pen but it would most-ly be a ticket for fl eeing the scene of an accident,” said Const. Fisher. ‘The biggest thing if you see something like this hap-
pen is to try to grab a license plate number. In this instance there was no license plate noted but due to the damage on the vehicle we were able to lo-cate it. Currently we have located the vehicle but not the driver.”

Sylvan gets set to expand bringing exciting possibilities for future
What a beautiful sight it is to see a thriving munic-ipality’s borders grow.
As the Town of Sylvan Lake released details of their land annexation this week, Lakers had the opportunity to watch this happen fi rst hand.
The municipal boundar-ies expanded the the west and north-east with land having been annexed from Red Deer County. These new parcels of land will come to play an in-tegral roles in the Town’s growth as they allow for future commodity access and residential resourc-es in key areas of Sylvan Lake.
The acquisition of near-ly fi ve quarters of land along the western border of the town will allow for a highly adaptable mix of residential and commer-cial zoning, granting ac-cess to residents in areas such as Fox Run and Lakeway Landing closer access to amenities.
Around four quarter sections were acquired to the north-east of Town along Highway 11A. This
land will one day be home to a hopeful mix of light and heavy indus-trial. With easy access to Red Deer and Blackfalds through highway 11A - the land was a smart grab by the Town.
Also in the annexation outlines are plans for an area known as Iron Gate. Although it may sound like a stronghold from the popular television show, Game of Thrones - it is in actuality the quarter section of land across Highway 20 from Ryder’s Ridge. This area will likely be zoned residential with the potential for light commercial activity, sim-ilar to Ryder’s Ridge.
With Highway 20 grant-ing main access to the town nestled nicely be-tween Ryder’s Ridge and Iron Gate, the name it-self seems fi tting as the highway is truly the gate-way to Sylvan Lake and this new quarter section will be the iron future of Sylvan’s residential growth.
Mayor Sean McIntyre stated in an interview
MLA Report: Good fences make good neighbours
Every one of us instinctively knows about fences. We trust fences. They give us a sense of stability and predictability. Not only do they defi ne the rules, they also tell us that the rules apply to everybody.
The truth is that we need fences because we need boundaries. Civilization relies on boundaries. Like fences, they tell us where our own authority (or permission to act) stops and starts, and where the other person’s au-thority stops and starts. Where you have au-thority, your neighbour does not. And where your neighbour has authority, you do not.
Boundaries are equally important—in fact essential—when it comes to governing. In Canada, there are boundaries (legal fences) between the authority of the federal govern-ment, the authority of the provincial govern-ment, and the authority of a mayor or city government.
The federal government has authority over things like currency, national defense, and interprovincial transportation of resources. Provincial governments have authority over education, municipalities, and property law. Mayors and city governments have authority over sewer systems, city streets, and subdivi-sion development.
Recently, provincial governments and big city mayors have been speaking out against interprovincial pipeline construction. Many Albertans have responded by calling the whole matter of equalization into question. But the problem is bigger than equalization.
According to University of Saskatchewan law professor Dwight Newman, the Supreme Court determined in 1954 that provincial gov-ernments cannot interfere with the federal government’s sole authority over interprovin-cial pipelines. Newman even points to legal provisions which say that provinces must make provincial Crown land available for federally approved interprovincial pipelines. He adds that the City of Burnaby’s notion that it can interfere with the federally regulated Kinder Morgan pipeline is absurd.
The same applies to the mayor of Montreal. In law there is an insurmountable fence- a legal Berlin Wall—between Montreal’s mayor and any decisions about a federally regulated interprovincial pipeline.
Currently, interprovincial pipeline construc-tion is professionally and independently eval-uated and approved by the National Energy Board (NEB)—an agent of the federal govern-ment that wields parliamentary authority. The NEB was created after one of the most famous parliamentary confrontations ever, known as the Great Pipeline Debate of 1956.
During the Great Pipeline Debate, MPs fought over the proposed route and fi nancing of the fi rst TransCanada Pipeline. Parliament turned to bedlam, leading to the defeat of the liberal government of Louis St. Laurent. Recognizing that Parliament could never go through that again, Laurent’s successor, John Diefenbaker, created the National Energy Board.
Today, Justin Trudeau wants to change the way interprovincial pipeline construction will be approved. He wants First Nations govern-ments to be part of the process, which makes sense. But he also wants to pull municipal governments and anti-development lobby groups more formally into the mix, seeming-ly eroding the integrity of the existing legal fences between mayors, provincial capitals, and the federal government. (Imagine if the construction of the CPR had been left up to big city mayors. Canada probably wouldn’t exist.)
The basis of Canadian democracy and the foundation of Canada’s government is rooted in the principle that the legal fences separat-ing the powers of various governments must be respected. When individuals seek to usurp or denigrate the rightful authority of the federal government, they’re not trampling on Alberta. They’re trampling on the integrity of the Canadian Constitution.
BY DON MACINTYREMLA INNISFAIL-SYLVAN LAKE
he feels the goal of this council has been to create a complete community and in order to do so they needed the space.
“We need space to pro-vide careers in the indus-trial sector and that is our vision for the north-east,” said McIntyre “We are a growing communi-ty that needs additional space for the homes of the people who may one day work in that sector and that occurs in both the Iron Gate area as well as the area west of 60 St.”
“We also recognize we need services and com-mercial offerings such as grocery stores and gas stations on that end of town as well.”
The recently conduct-ed Retail Gap Analysis highlighted a number of key retail opportunities
that may thrive in the area. The partnership be-tween the Town and the Chamber of Commerce combined with the work being done by the Business Recruitment Team to better under-stand the area west of 60 St. has been an admirable initiative, one which is sure to prove successful.
Mayor McIntyre added studies such as the Retail Gap Analysis show the community where op-portunities in business are occurring as well as opportunities for outside businesses to invest in the area.
The Retail Gap Analysis also provided the town with many interest-ing notions to consider while revitalizing the downtown area, identi-fying such suggestions as increasing the num-ber of mixed residential/commercial buildings to encourage people to live in the downtown area. It pushed for more year-round activities and en-couraged the downtown area to become a hub for
regional artists.Imagine a sunny sum-
mer’s day walking down Lakeshore, a farm-er’s market bustles in a nearby lot - vendors sell their home made goods, buskers line the pathway next to the lake. Some are painting, others play lively tunes on a guitar. You and your friends walk from your down-town apartment complex the block and a half to a local craft brewer’s out-door patio to enjoy local sourced food alongside your pint of tasty ale.
It is exciting to see a community blossom and fl ourish. Just as we’ve watched the municipality borders grow so to are we sure to see these new areas come to a full fru-ition. These new areas along with the existing vibrant downtown core will set up Sylvan Lake for an exciting, prosper-ous future and a carefully created complete com-munity.

Feedback being sought out for
environmental plan
The Town of Sylvan Lake is seeking community feedback to include in the Sylvan Lake Environmental Management Plan.
The community is asked to give feedback by taking the online survey at www.sylvanlake.ca/public-notices.
The feedback collected from this survey is anonymous. Feedback must be from indi-viduals 16-year-old or older, with the feedback being used to infl uence the con-struction of the Sylvan Lake Environmental Management Plan.
The feedback will help guide the future development in the town said planning and devel-opment director for the Town of Sylvan Lake, Ken Kalirai.
“We’re looking for an honest opinion from anyone under-taking the survey to give us feedback in regards to what type of environmental pro-tection they think the town is already providing,” he said. “We’re looking for suggestions on how we can enhance things and make things better as far as environmental pro-tection is concerned.”
He encourages everyone to take the survey because the more responses given the more they can include the feedback. MARKET UPDATESome central Alberta real estate markets are behaving like we would expect in current economic circumstances and some have surprised us. Past economic downturns have generated markets with slower sales and higher listing inventories. The change in unit sales from 2014 to 2015 was -27% in Sylvan, -36% in Rocky, -36% in Blackfalds, -25% in Ponoka, -26% in Lacombe, -17% in Red Deer, and +1% in Penhold. Those changes take us back to 2012 & 2013 sales levels.
The surprise comes in the number of active listings. Sylvan Lake, Lacombe, Ponoka, Rocky and Penhold listing counts are only slightly higher than last year at this time, while Red Deer and Blackfalds have higher than normal counts, but not high enough to be a large concern at this point. Ultimately the relationship between Supply and Demand determines where prices will go and if the number of active listings remains stable, prices are unlikely to fl uctuate much.
Is it a good time to buy or sell? That depends on your individual situation. Every market and every price range inside those markets offer different opportunities. Smart consumers make their buying and selling decisions based on current market information specifi cally tailored to their situation by their local RE/MAX real estate central alberta offi ce - where you’ll fi nd “local” experts.
Call us for detailed market information for Sylvan Lake, Red Deer, Blackfalds, Lacombe or Ponoka.

Town set to test out new emergency alert siren
The Town of Sylvan Lake is set to test out their new Emergency Alert Siren on Mar. 2 at 12 p.m.
for approximately fi ve minutes. The new siren is built into the
new fi re hall and will be loudest in that area.
Joanne Gaudet, communi-cations offi cer for the Town of
Sylvan Lake said they are excited to have the opportunity to try the siren but wish to ensure everyone knows well in advance so as not to scare anyone.
“We need to know if it is loud
BY JENNA SWANSYLVAN LAKE NEWS
enough or as loud as we believe it is and hopefully it will be another resource to use when the Town or province does de-clare a state of emergency,” said Gaudet. “If we enact the Alberta Emergency Alert Act that is when you would hear the siren going off - something like a train de-
railment, tornadoes or maybe a toxic noxious gas leak.”
“It is a good opportunity for families to practice their in home emergency responses - we always encourage families to have that plan in place so their kids know what to do if the alert does go off and practice where the safe
places are if their is a tornado.”Gaudet suggests visiting www.
emergencyalert.alberta.ca for emergency preparedness tips as well as tips on creating an inexpensive at home 72 hour survival kit.

Great savings, convenient indoor shopping and fun for the whole family can be found at the 40th annual Red Deer RV Show and Sale.
The show runs Feb. 12th – 21st at Westerner Park – it’s the rst year since its inception that the show has run for 10 days.
“The show rst started before the Westerner was here,” said Marty Vellner, chair of the Red Deer RV Show and Sale. “We used to run the show down in the arena and the Kinex building.
“The show has always been run as a cooperative effort amongst the dealers as opposed to most other shows which are run by either a promoter or an association.”
For the last number of years there have been two shows put on in Red Deer – the Red Deer RV Show and Sale and the Central Alberta RV Show and Sale. This year, both shows have been combined.
The show and sale is presented by the six RV dealers in Red Deer including Woody’s RV World, Vellner Leisure Products, Go Uncle Ben’s RV and Marine Red Deer, Southside RV Centre, Allan Dale Trailers & RV’s and Western R.V. Country. Attendees to the show can visit the latest and greatest in RV models and technology all while indoors. In addition to a variety
of new RVs that will be on display, there will also be a number of booths, which will be showcasing RV accessories and all that comes with living the RV lifestyle.
“The show features roughly 120,000 square-feet of brand new RV models in a comfortable indoor setting. We’ll have everything that the industry has to offer in terms of products. It will encompass motor homes of all types, diesel pushers, gas Class A & Class C motorhomes, fth wheels, travel trailers of all sizes & Toy Haulers. All of the innovations the industry has to offer will be on display. People can come and shop and compare, all under one roof,” said Vellner. “We’ll have about 200 new 2016 products and that is roughly $12 million in terms of value of product.”
To accompany the RVs on display, there will be 30 exhibitors who are selling products, services and accessories complimentary to the RV lifestyle.
Meanwhile, Vellner said now is the time to look at getting into the RV lifestyle.
“Supply and demand is a fairly fundamental economic driver. Typically in the off-season, like we are now, the demand is lower, so there’s more motivation on the part of dealers to get product moving. The timing of these shows is geared to kicking off our season,” said
Vellner. “There’s always price increases coming into the selling season from the manufacturers. Typically the product that you can buy early in the season will be less money than what you would buy later in the season.”
He added from a vacation opportunity the RV business is a lifestyle choice.
“It offers more exibility and more creativity than any resort-type environment. It’s your house on wheels. It’s the most cost-effective way to take a family on a holiday,” said Vellner. “This type of lifestyle has always had an appeal with a section of the market. Where it’s gaining appeal is amongst young, overworked, busy people. The problem with the pace of life that we have now is that it separates families and doesn’t allow for family time. The types of things that can relieve that is the ‘get out and breathe the fresh air and sit around the re with your kids’ type thing. It keeps families in close quarters together and it builds bonds.”
Hours for the Red Deer RV Show include Feb. 12th-13th from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Feb. 14th-18th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Feb. 19th-20th 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Feb. 21st from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

I cannot confirm this, but it seems that this promotion deliberately coincides with Lent. Lent is the period of 40 days leading up to Good Friday — it starts on Ash Wednesday (this year, February 10th). Lent has traditionally been a time when people give up something that they like. But, just in case you were thinking of giving up your precious “double double” for Lent, rolling the rim may be designed to keep coffee sales from dropping.
It is often true that there are things that we could easily do without. Many people give up things like fast food or social media for Lent. The idea is to do something good with either the time or money spent on those things. Some people save their coffee money and give it to a good cause. Others use the time normally spent on some things to meditate or to write a journal.
Lent was originally a time to prepare hearts for the beauty of Christ’s passion — his death and resurrection which are the essence of Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
But behind all of that is the idea that sometimes we become so attached to “things” that they begin to control us. Jim Elliot was a missionary who died tragically in 1957 doing what he loved. He once said “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose”. Many of the things that control us have no eternal value. So perhaps Lent is a time for us to really evaluate what is important — eternally important. And there is no better place to find eternal meaning than in the story of Easter.
Thanks for your time!

Shrove Tuesday celebrated before start of lent
Shrove Tuesday was a huge celebration of pancakes and sausage at École Our Lady of the Rosary and École Mother Teresa Schools.
Students brought their families to join in on the fun of the feast and to fi ll their stomachs to content before the lent season began.
Lent began the following day. During lent the tradition is to fast, pray and look at almsgiving during the 40 day period.
“The tradition is that during lent you do not enjoy the luxuries of food such as eggs, meats, etc,” said École Our Lady of the Rosary principal Diane Kulczycki.
“You indulge in food that one sacrifi ces for the upcoiming 40 days,” she added.
On Ash Wednesday catholics obstain from eating meat. Every Friday throughout lent teenagers and adults obstain from eating meat as well.
The Shrove morning of cooking all the pancakes and sausages went well Kulczycki said. The staff were there by 6:30 a.m. preparing everything. The school was busy, but everyone had fun being there.
It was obvious the students were having fun eating their fi ll of the feast. Kulczycki said one of the Kindergarten stu-dents came up to her and said they should have a pancake and sausage breakfast every morning.
“A lot of our students were very excited to come and cele-brate breakfast with their school community,” Kulczycki said.

Local visual artist offers Art Night Series to communityOne of the community’s local
visual artists is encouraging other art enthusiasts to gath-er at her home to share and express their creativity twice a month.
Marian Shilka, having been
an artist herself for many years, wants to provide a space for creative people to mingle and experience other’s creativity.
She describes this gathering as being informal and plans to offer different types of art based activities each meet up.
“What I hope to see is that people will get more creative
as it goes on and hopefully see some people come back for more than one night,” Shilka said.
Some of the things she plans to arrange include demon-strations, discussions on art history, mini classes and guest speakers. Other times can be just for sharing creative ideas
BY JASMINE O’HALLORAN-HANSYLVAN LAKE NEWS
and discussing them.In these sessions Shilka
plans on asking those who attend what they would like to see and do in future sessions. This way she can try to foster their desires to explore the world of art.
“It could be a quick session on doing water colour sketches or a session on doing mixed media acrylic,” she said.
She also plans on opening up her sessions to anything that is art related. This could include music with musicians sharing information on how to play an instrument or how to
write songs.“It’s not just a painting type
class,” Shilka said. “What I am hoping to see is different cre-ative people coming together. It’s like an appreciation of the different arts.”
“I want to acknowledge the creativity in our community,” she added.
The fi rst session was Feb. 10 where people made cards for Valentine’s Day. The next session is planned for Feb. 24 and Shilka is gearing towards art or visual journaling.
Art or visual journaling is taking an actual art journal or
sketchbook and creating visual pieces that are accompanied by the artist’s own personal thoughts.
“It’s a very private kind of journaling but there’s the visual aspect to it as well,” Shilka said.
She will offer her Art Night Series sessions Wednesdays 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., twice a month until May 25.
Those interested in partic-ipating should call Marian Shilka at 780-518-4744 or email her at [email protected].

Lakers victorious in win over Lacombe Rockets
The Sylvan Lake Hockey Central Midget A Lakers beat the Lacombe Rockets 8-1 in a home game Saturday.
It was a slower game but the Lakers played with con-fi dence and kept scoring in all three periods.
Both teams tried to score on each other but the Lakers proved to have great de-fence, only letting in one
goal.Head coach for the Lakers
Mike Nesbitt commented on the game and said it went well.
“We had good teamwork - we moved the puck around and we played really well defensively,” he said.
During the whole game the Lakers showed excellent ability to dominate and possess the puck.
Nesbitt said a highlight of the game was how the
Sylvester cousins – Adam and Trysten – shared the same shift and experienced a good deal of success.
Nesbitt said he isn’t sur-prised by the 8-1 score, he said the team has been winning games over the Rockets this year.
Even though this game may not have been the most challenging for the Lakers, Nesbitt said the team is still working on their defense system.
The team only has one more game to play before the playoffs set to be played against Stettler on Feb. 12 at the NexSource Centre.
Nesbitt said coming up to playoffs he is confi dent in the team’s abilities and feels it will be a strong end to the season.
“It’s going to be good,” he said. “Anybody can win. Everybody is pretty even, so it’s going to be fun.”
Tigers win victoriously over BisonsIt was a memorable game for the West
Central Trilliant Tigers Midget AA team in a win of 7-2 against the Foothills Bisons Friday at the NexSource Centre.
Right from the fi rst puck drop the Tigers showed fi erce passion to win and gave their opponents no mercy, something assistant coach Trent Herbert is often heard saying to encourage the players during the game.
The Tigers defi nitely put the pressure on the Bisons and continued to do so all throughout the game.
It was obvious the Tigers would be very hard to beat as the Tigers scored the fi rst two goals in the fi rst period, leaving no room for the Bisons to bite back.
In the second period the Tigers started to slow down a little only scoring one goal. This is when the Bisons scored their only two goals of the game.
At the end of the second period the score was again in the Tigers favour as they led 3-2, leaving the spectators wondering how the third period would pan out.
Needless to say the Tigers came back with more energy than ever and scored four more goals in the third period.
Tigers head coach Pat Garritty was
thrilled on his team’s win and said it was the best 60 minutes the team had played in a long time.
“Right from the drop of the fi rst puck we had great great pressure on all areas of the ice and for the fi rst time in a long time our chances were good going in. It’s a great game for us,” Garritty said.
“We kind of took it over in the third pe-riod,” he added.
In the practices before hand the boys had worked on skills like lane driving, speeding through the neutral zone and defensive zone play. Their hard work at practice defi nitely showed.
Garritty noticed his players doing what they had practiced previous to the game.
“It’s nice that they are working on the things that we’re working on,” he said. “They are committed to the process, they are playing as a team and they are sup-porting each other.”
March is only weeks away and Garritty said they are getting ready for the play-offs. He said this game is a really big step towards the playoffs.
Player of the game Kolton Muyres scored the fi rst goal of the third period. He was thrilled to be named player of the game.
“It means a lot because I helped the team out a lot today,” Muyres said. “Whomever
BY JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HANSYLVAN LAKE NEWS

gets it played a big part in the game.”He commented on how the game went
pretty good and how the team has been working on a few things that really came into play which he said defi nitely helped them out.
What Muyres was most proud of was how the team played together.
“We really came to play in the third (pe-riod) and that’s what we’re seeing on the (score) board,” he said. “The team has really come together in the past few months. We’re playing good and it’s all good.”

The 17U Wave volleyball team were in Calgary Feb 6 and 7th for the Premier 1 tour-nament. The tournament consists of both 17U and 18U teams. They started on Saturday in the round robin which had them lose all their games (against the Calgary Ace and Calgary Canucks and the Medicine Hat team 18U). These results landed them in 4th place in their pool heading into the playoffs.
The fi rst playoff game (the crossover) had them against the Cochrane Jaguars late Saturday afternoon. The team really put it all together and pulled out the win in two sets. Sunday morning set the team up against the team from the Yukon which they won in two convincing sets. This brought us to the
semi-fi nal game against our other Sylvan Lake 18U team. Both teams had an amazing game but the 17U team took the games in close sets 25-23 and 25-19. This had the 17U heading into the gold medal game against the TSA team from Calgary. The fi rst set was lost 25-23 then the team rallied and won 25-17 taking them into the ever stressful 3rd set, which was a hard fought battle to come out on top 15-13.
Coach Rick Boyes said the girl’s camaraderie and refusal to let the volleyball touch their court earned them this gold medal. We are very excited to see what this team with be able to accomplish the rest of the season. A great effort by all the players and they should be very proud.

ELLERBYJohn1934 - 2016With hearts full of treasured memories it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful husband, dad, grandpa and GGpa - John Williams Ellerby. He was a man who faithfully loved God, his wife of 56 years, his children and grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was our hero. John was born on December 22, 1934 on the family farm near Throne, Alberta. He was the fi fth child in a family of 7 children born to Wilbur and Grace Ellerby. He is survived by his loving wife Donna Ellerby, his four children Laurel (Brian) Allan, Tim (Melody) Ellerby, Trevor (Dorothy) Ellerby and Lisa (Pat) Boomer and his 12 grandchildren - Brittany (Ryan) Krook, Rebecca Allan, Ben (Tori) Allan, Jonathan Allan, Tyler Ellerby, Tannis (Clare) Butterfl y, Keelan Ellerby, Tori Lee, Morgan Boomer, Logan Boomer, Shyla Ellerby, Carson Ellerby and two great-grandchildren Tristan and Avery Krook. He is also
survived by his two sisters Lillian and Mary (Mike). He was pre-deceased by his parents, his brothers Wray, Albert and Ben, sister Ruth, brother-in laws Bob and Joe and nephews Les and Kevin. John’s parents instilled in him the importance of hard work, honesty, being a man of character and to have a heart for God. John made a commitment to follow Jesus Christ as a young boy and lived that promise all the days of his life. At the age of 24 John left the farm and moved to Edmonton to be near his long-time sweetheart Donna Wenger. They were married on February 12, 1960. He worked in the city at a number of positions until he was hired in 1961 by Alberta Gas Trunkline. At that time they moved to Alix and during those years they had their fi rst three children. After their transfer to Bentley in 1969 their family grew to include a 4th child in 1970. Many happy years were spent in Bentley raising children, playing sports, camping and going to the nearby lake almost daily during the summer months. The family were active members in a local church and developed many close friendships that have lasted a lifetime. John and Donna fi nished raising their family on a farm in the Sylvan Lake area and have continued to reside there until the present. Throughout John’s life he had an entrepreneurial spirit and in his spare time he enjoyed working around his farm, building enclosures for oil fi eld facilities, maintaining a herd of cows and making time for any projects his children or grandchildren had on the go. He wanted the best for his family. John was known to keep anything that might come in handy and if you needed something he most likely had it or could make it. John and Donna freely shared their home and yard hosting many events over the years. John retired from Nova (Alberta Gas Trunkline) in 1995. Upon retirement, John and Donna travelled quite extensively and spent time in Arizona each winter. In the last few years John enjoyed maintaining a big yard, going for daily walks and puttering in his shop. John Ellerby peacefully passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 81 years on February 4th, 2016. The family wish to thank Dr. M. Kauchali and the staff at the Red Deer Hospice for their loving care in John’s last few days. A celebration of his life will be held at Living Stones Church 2020 - 40th Avenue in Red Deer on Friday, February 12th 2016 at 1:30 p.m. If friends so desire memorial donations can be made in John’s honor to Circle Square Ranch at Halkirk, Alberta and/or Sylvan Lake Community Partners Association in Sylvan Lake. Condolences may be sent or viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com.

CAMERONDouglas HowardDoug was born on March 22, 1935 to parents Marjorie and Howard Cameron of Waskada, Manitoba. (now deceased) He passed away peacefully on January 14, 2016 at the hospital in Fort St. John, B.C. Doug went to school in Waskada and farmed the family farm. Off season he was a caretaker at the school and the rink, as well he as a school bus driver. He married Shirley Lorraine Culbertson in 1953. They had four children; Dwayne, Joelle, Brenda and Carla. Dad left farming in 1978 and headed to Alberta with Dwayne to pursue a livelihood in the oilfi eld. He retired at the age of 65 in the Benalto, AB. area, where he met many cherished friends. He headed further West to Fort. St. John, B.C. where he met and married Betty Aven in 2014. Dad’s love for his family was the most important aspect of his life. He was a fun-loving, hard-working man. He taught us the benefi ts of doing a job and doing it well. Dad enjoyed fi shing, camping and ski-dooing in his younger years. He loved music, dancing and family gatherings. Dad loved farming and the lifestyle it offered. He was proud to tell stories of his younger years in S.W. Manitoba. Upon moving West, Dad spent many years working as a drill push and water hauler until he retired. He enjoyed working all over Western Canada. Dad loved life and lived it to the fullest. He leaves to mourn, is wife Betty, his children; Dwayne (Bev), Joelle (Bill), Brenda (Doug) and Carla (Real), his grandchildren: Jennifer (Dave), Chanda (Lance), Brad, Julie, Justin (Tara), Mervin (Liz), Sherry (Scott), Tory, Cayla, Daniel, Danae, Ashton; great grandchildren, Kahu, Noah, Haylee, Leah, Rylan, Reid, Joshua, Emily, Amelia, Madison, Cayden and Bonnie. Dad will be sadly missed by his family and friends. A private graveside service to be held at a later date.
