Sylvan Lake News

Innisfail-Sylvan Lake MLA Kerry Towle told a cheering audi-ence of almost 500 people that she’s going to do whatever it takes to represent residents’ views that lights are needed at the Highway 11 and 781 intersection.

But she told them, at last Tuesday’s meeting in the commu-nity centre, that she needed the support of everyone in the room to convince town councillors they should be lobbying for lights at that corner.

Mayor Susan Samson and town

councillors, who were not at the meeting, took the brunt of Towle’s criticism although she stressed several times she’s trying to be fair and not take their words out of context.

She also indicated she’d met with Red Deer County and asked them why they’re not supporting the campaign. “It starts with the grassroots, there’s a process here,” she said. “You guys are obviously passionate, I believe there’s an easy fix. But your municipal councils, Sylvan Lake and Red Deer County are not hearing you.”

Red Deer County councillor George Gehrke was at the meet-ing.

Noting that the cost for Memorial Trail is now up to $6.7 million, Towle said the price isn’t going to stop there. “Anybody who thinks it’s going to stop at $6.7 million is fooling themselves.

Traffic stop resulted in cash, drugs

by Steve DillsSylvan Lake News

A simple traffic stop for speeding grew into much more for Sylvan

Lake RCMP, according to Cpl. James Allemekinders.

A vehicle was stopped on Lakeshore Drive near 46th Street

about 10 p.m. last Friday. Upon stopping the vehicle it was deter-mined the driver had been drinking, a 24 hour suspension was issued and the vehicle towed.

A large quantity of cash as well as a number of Percocet pills were seized from the vehicle.

Eddi Daniel Rogers, 33, a passenger in the vehicle, has been charged with one count of possession of a con-trolled substance for the purpose of trafficking as well as possession of the proceeds of crime.

“We believe that we have seized not only illegal drugs but the profits that came from trafficking of drugs,” said Allemekinders in a news release.

Rogers was released on $2,000 cash bail as well as a number of conditions. His first appearance in Red Deer Provincial Court is on Sept. 10.

Female sailors arriving to compete for national titleby Steve Dills

Sylvan Lake News

The waters of the lake will be dotted with sailors this weekend as Sylvan Lake Sailing Club hosts a national women’s competition.

The Canadian Yachting Association Women’s Keelboat Nationals are being held from today (Thursday) to Sunday.

All teams will be racing Martin 242 boat described as 24 foot high performance racers.

Events start with a meet and greet Thursday night. A board-room clinic takes place Friday morning with guest coach Michael Clements (current Martin 242

Canadian National Champion and Fleet Captain of Royal Vancouver Yacht Club). Then it’s down to the docks and onto the water for more coaching and prac-tise.

The clinic will conclude with a practise race or two under the direction of multi-Olympic race officer Paul Ulibarri.

Racing gets underway Saturday morning.

Eleven teams are registered, according to a list on the sailing club’s website.

Team Ontario is from Nepean Sailing Club, while other teams are from Royal Victoria Yacht Club, Kelowna Yacht Cub, Central

Okanagan Sailing and Glenmore Sailing Club.

Four teams represent Sylvan Lake Sailing Club. They include Team TRYM with Marg Phelan as skipper and Rita Johnson, Tracey Andersen and Yvonne Bradshaw as crew; Team Boom Booms with Norma Turner as skipper and Debbie Russell, Linda Ethier and Grace Ford as crew; Team Sorcerer with Kathy Martin as skipper and Joyce Ulsifer, Laura Larsen and Heather Tee-Saganis as crew; and Team Chicks Ahoy! with Linda Boyd as skipper and Cheryl Murdock, Gail Surkan and Nancy Smith as crew.

Continued from page 2The event is not just

about racing, states the website. Four socials are scheduled Thursday to Sunday and there will be lots of time to meet new sailors and visit old friends.

Norma Turner, com-modore of the local club, said in an inter-view earlier this year this is the first time the championships have been hosted in one of the prairie provinces. They alternate between east and west every year.

The association requires the host club to have a fleet of boats of one design for use in the championships. Sylvan Lake’s club has 15 member-owned Martin 242 sailboats and all of their owners have generously offered them to be used in the regatta. “This is one of the unique elements of the regatta,” said Turner.

“One design racing provides the opportu-nity for all crews to have an equal chance of winning based on their skills, therefore, it is about the boatmanship

and strategy, not the boats,” she said.

In previous years, Sylvan Lake’s club has sent teams to Kelowna and Ottawa to compete in the championships.

Spectators will be able to view the races from the shore or on the water it they have their own boats. Suggestions to the spec-tator boats would be to keep some distance, keep their wake to a minimum and mind the directions from the marshalls that will be on the course during the races, said Turner.

Lighthouse slated for demolition this fallby Steve Dills

Sylvan Lake News

A symbol of Sylvan Lake for almost 25 years, the lighthouse at the marina is slated for demolition this fall as part of development plans for the property.

Betty Osmond, the town’s chief adminis-trative officer, said it’s coming down in prep-aration for marina work this winter.

Councillors app-roved a demolition permit for the rental shack on the property but because the light-house has such a small footprint a permit isn’t needed for its destruc-

tion.The 55 foot octago-

nal white tower with a red cupola over the lantern, which was erected to commemo-rate the 75th anniver-sary of the town in 1988, is in very poor shape and is not salva-gable.

“We had both the building inspector and fire chief look at it and it’s not in a state that could be saved,” said Ron Lebsack, director of leisure and protec-tive services.

“From a staff per-spective our recom-mendation is not to preserve the light-house,” added Osmond. A landmark in Sylvan Lake for the past 25 years, the

lighthouse at the marina is slated for demolition this fall. When built in 1988 it was described as the only operating lighthouse between the Pacific west coast and Lake Winnipeg. STEVE DILLS FILE

“My understanding is it’s pretty much crum-bling.”

“I’m hoping we’re going to see it in the 2013 budget,” said Mayor Susan Samson. “The lighthouse has to be replaced.”

She and her family were among the “Keepers of the Light” who contributed to the initial construction, according to a plaque on the lighthouse.

The plaque also claims the structure “is the only operating lighthouse between the Pacific west coast and Lake Winnipeg”.

“Like the lonely sen-tinels that have guided mariners for hundreds of years, it’s hoped this light will be a guide to Sylvan Lake for all,” the plaque states.

Samson also asked town staff to see if the plaque could be saved.

While the light-house is on private property now, that strip of land where it sits will eventually be given to the town as municipal reserve for a park space when devel-opment of the marina takes place.

“Comments are going to come back, ‘there they go tearing down one of our icons’,” said Councillor Dale Plante.

Councillor Laverne Asselstine was equally concerned. “What was put up for our 75th anniversary is being torn down in our 100th.”

Samson later in the discussion suggested a motion that “council

will pursue every ave-nue to ensure a new lighthouse replaces the former structure and will leave no stone unturned”.

However Councillor Rick Grimson suggest-ed, “there might be other options” for a different type of struc-ture. And Councillor Ken MacVicar ques-tioned whether the town should defini-tively say it would pay the bill for the cost.

As a result, the motion by Plante, which was unanimous-ly supported, stated council “will support the initiative to replace the structure with something equal or appropriate”.

Continued from Page 1“I’m prepared to

draft letters for each and every one of you,” she continued, noting that’s not really her job as MLA.

Countering the idea that lights at 781 would be too close to the Highway 20 lights or the interchange planned to connect 781 and 20, she said there are “many, many, many

examples all over the province where lights have been put up” in close proximity to oth-ers.

She added that the 781 corner is actually just Highway 20 south.

In response to a question, she said, “I’m not limiting my discus-sion to only lights, I’m asking for an open intersection to travel in a safe manner.”

Towle volunteered to organize....She asked the ques-

tion, “is this the man-date you have given me and is this how you want me to go for-ward?” and got a resounding round of applause.

One speaker sug-gested that the inter-section at Highway 20 and Memorial Trail, just a few hundred metres from the Highway 11 intersec-tion is going to need lights and major work to take out the hill.

Heather Donald stated that while Memorial Trail is being constructed, a lot of traffic is flowing through school zones to get out of town head-ing east.

“That’s a recipe for disaster,” another

speaker said.“Clearly you’re not

getting through on all levels that you want change,” Towle said. “I don’t get very many calls from people ask-ing to leave it the way it is.”

“I’m imploring each and every one in the room, we know it will be a long hard fight, don’t give up. Don’t allow elected officials to give up.”

Rod English said, “We’ve got to get this a higher profile.”

Towle proposed ral-lies in front of Premier Alison Redford’s office, in front of Transportation Min-ister Ric McIver’s office, and once the legislature is back in on Oct. 23, on the steps of the leg-

islature.“You have to band

together, you have to travel,” she said.

Another suggestion came from Dale Mannix. “Why don’t we all drive out on 781, 11, 20 and shut our cars off.” Then he suggested that to attract council’s attention they should sit out in front of the council chambers on Monday night and blow their horns.

“You need to move your protest,” said Towle. Start with Alberta Transportation, then McIver’s office, then the Legislature. I’ll organize the whole thing,” she promised.

Les Vidok, Liberal candidate in the last election, added, “One of the reasons I ran was I was frustrated as a resident of this town. We need to stand up

and do something in order to change gov-ernment, we need to put pressure on.”

Businessman Matt Toonders suggested they start with a “non-confidence vote with our council and our mayor”. He admitted that until they get municipal support it’s going to be very diffi-cult to get things changed.

Towle agreed. “The reality is if we don’t get municipal councils onboard, that’s the way the process works, you people have far better success if you can encourage our repre-sentatives to defend the position of residents. I encourage you to start there. If you don’t get them on board, this job is near impossible. We want to work co-opera-tively with the munici-

pality.”Answering the ques-

tion, “where do we go from here?”, Towle said the minister (McIver) is ultimately the person who makes the deci-sion.

She encouraged everyone in the room to provide her with their name, address and email. “This will allow us to update you on what’s going on. It will allow us to organize a rally at McIver’s office, a rally in Edmonton. If we want to organize we have to be organized.”

Concluding the meeting, Towle said she’s excited to be open-ing an office in Sylvan Lake at the Community Partners office on 50th Avenue. It will be open by Oct. 1st on a regular schedule, although not full time.

We wonder how many thousands of pictures have been taken of Sylvan Lake’s landmark lighthouse in the 25 years since its construction in 1988.

It’s certainly well recognized as synony-mous with our fabu-lous lake culture and when working, with the light revolving, we’re sure it’s guided more than a few way-ward people to the marina.

It’s octagonal shape appears on sketches, pictures and logos by many of the commu-nity’s artists, or for businesses and organi-zations. Wood carver Edward Mutemwa, who we interviewed this week, is planning to use the lighthouse to create souvenirs (see his story in next week’s paper). Others have already used the light-house concept in so many other ways.

Certainly it’s estab-lished itself as part of Sylvan Lake.

That’s why we’ll be sorry to see it come

down later this fall. We understand con-cerns about the structure which suf-fered fire damage several years ago.

Saying that, we’re enthusiastic about the opportunities ahead for creation of another truly iconic symbol of Sylvan Lake.

We believe, as Mayor Susan Samson stated at Monday night’s council meet-ing, that the lighthouse has to be replaced.

The suggestion that the town gather thoughts and ideas from residents is a good one. After all the more minds that are set to thinking, the bet-ter the end product will be.

As a photographer who has captured the brilliant white sides and red cupola through all seasons, reflected in the water or in the night sky and we’ve given just a cursory amount of thought to what should happen.

But we’d like to offer one suggestion.

Recognizing that the Heart of Town Association, when it disbanded, left the town $100,000 in trust for a band shell or stage, we’d suggest melding of the two projects. There’s the seed money to raise more and see a truly unique structure cre-ated.

Let’s incorporate a raised band stand (per-haps up to three feet off the ground or maybe even higher to accommodate sound equipment below the stage), into the based on a new lighthouse situated on the pier. (That’s right, not at the marina.)

Explore the idea that the musicians’ area could be open for per-formances but enclosed on all sides with plexi-glass or some other type of suitable clear see-through product when it’s not in use.

Perhaps not all sides need to be open during performanc-es. It could become a viewing platform for water events or

fireworks. Perhaps a place for small func-tions.

Of course the light-house needs to be

functioning so the light can call people to the beach. Maybe it could be used to attract atten-tion, much as years ago huge spot lights were used criss-crossing the sky to attract people to certain businesses.

We’ll leave the logis-tics to engineers to

determine if our idea is feasible.

But in the meantime we encourage all resi-dents to take a look at the lighthouse before it disappears, and con-sider what you’d like to see as a suitable land-mark for our commu-nity beside the water.

Canada’s health care not all it’s cracked up to beCanada is supposed to

have one of the best health care systems in the world. Though I don’t doubt the benefits of having universally accessible health care, my experience with Argentina’s system was an eye-opener to the limitations of our own.

About three weeks into my time in Argentina, I got a nasty sore throat. I didn’t want to eat or drink any-thing, because it hurt too much to swallow. However, besides taking a few painkill-ers, I ignored it. It wasn’t uncommon for me to get a sore throat. The first time I got one in Canada, the doc-tor told me to wait it out and take some Advil in the mean-time.

I talked with my mom on Skype the night my throat started hurting. She com-mented on how I was talking differently, and with further prodding I told her about my

situation. She told me to see a doctor. I refused. There was nothing they could do, I said, and I didn’t want to get involved with the medi-cal system in another coun-try.

I woke up the next morn-ing feeling awful. My throat was burning. My whole body ached and my muscles felt weak. I felt too hot, then too cold. I dragged myself over to the bathroom, opened my mouth, and looked in the mirror. There were white spots on the back of my throat.

I went to my wallet, searching for my traveller’s health card. There was a phone number on the back I could call to find where to get treatment.

My roommate Andrea came home from surfing as I was heading out. She was from Northern Mexico, and spoke English and Spanish.

She saw me — exhausted, with a hoarse voice — and offered to come with me, even though she had class in an hour and a half. Feeling very grateful, I accepted. Though I could speak Spanish, I didn’t know how to explain how I was feeling to the doctor.

The hospital was a large building of several stories, with a help desk at the entrance. A sign provided directions to each floor’s facilities. Staff and visitors entered and exited a row of rickety elevators, which closed with a manual door.

We made our way to what looked like a walk-in clinic. A team of nurses sat in a row behind a window. I

approached one, who gave me a clipboard with a form. I cast an eye over it, feeling helpless. What information was I supposed to give her? My provincial health card was useless outside of Canada. I had no idea how the health care system in Argentina worked.

I filled out the form as best I could, and gave it back along with my passport, explaining the situation. She did not seem bothered by the fact that I was foreign, and accepted the forms and pho-tocopied my passport. She charged me the equivalent of $25 for the entire visit, and instructed me to sit down and wait until my name was called.

I took my seat next to Andrea. After some time, I heard my name, and looked up to see a nurse waiting for me. She took Andrea and I to a private room. After asking

me some questions, which I answered in English and Andrea translated, she left.

A doctor entered in a few minutes. After hearing my symptoms, she took my temperature and showed it to me. I had a fever of 38.5 C.

“This is why you feel weak,” she said in Spanish.

She continued to examine me, and finally diagnosed me with strep throat. After receiving a prescription, I left with Andrea. The entire trip and visit had taken an hour, and Andrea still had time to go to class.

I was shocked. In Canada, I would have easily waited several hours to see a doctor. I don’t know what can be done about wait times here, but my experience in Argentina showed me it is possible for them to be rea-sonable — and they should be.

Tragic death may have been averted with emergency care centreDear Editor,

On Saturday, Aug. 18th at approximately 4 p.m., my husband, Brent Boychuk, was experi-encing the early stages of a heart attack. He asked my daughter Brianne to take him to the clinic in the Pierview area. They arrived at the family medical centre where Brent himself, with Brianne, walked up to the doors to seek medical help and the doors were locked.

Brent walked back to the truck and asked Brianne to take him to Dr. Fugler’s office where he and Brianne again walked up to the door to find it locked also. There Brent fell uncon-scious.

I desperately tried to call Brianne several times on the phone to find out if my husband was okay and what had happened. Little did I know that at this time she was administering CPR trying to save her daddy’s life.

I called the hospital to get the doctor’s num-ber that was on call here in Sylvan, but the nurse at hospital took my number and said the doctor would call me back. That was on the 18th of August. Today as I write this is the 27th of August and I still have not heard from the doctor on call that day.

I finally got hold of Brianne to find out that my beloved Brent had

suffering a heart attack and that the paramedics were trying to revive him.

I drove like a mad woman to talk to my baby to help bring him back. All the words and crying and pleading, the begging and kisses and love I gave him couldn’t save him. What he needed was immediate medical attention.

My husband, Brent Boychuk, was pro-nounced dead that afternoon after finally arriving at Red Deer Regional Hospital.

Sylvan Lake has a population of well over 13,000 permanent resi-dents and no emergency care facility, trauma centre, or hospital!

Instead, what we had on that day of desperation were locked clinics, doctors on holidays and a doctor on call that didn’t call at all.

I have no doubt in my mind my husband, Brent Boychuk, would have had a great chance of survival and still be with us today if an emergency clinic was open. He was coherent and walking until he collapsed at the last clinic.

He left behind a wife, four children, and his mother who love him dearly and will forever, as well as many family and friends that will miss him.

All this could have been avoided if there

was somewhere in Sylvan Lake for my hus-band to get help. Even just an ambulance (which I might add Sylvan Lake does not have according to infor-mation given to me by the town). Our ambu-lance is a shared ambu-lance!

We can pay $2 mil-lion plus for fancy bath-

rooms at the beach but can’t find the funds for emergency care, help me with those funds please I am pleading with you.

I am begging every-one to help me get this Emergency Care Facility up and running as quickly as we can. Please email me and I will share my idea with you.

I will make it happen through hell or high water, I just need every-one’s support.

Let’s not let this hap-pen to anyone else. How many deaths does it take this town before action is taken?

Thank you to all the sponsors, and everyone that supports the jazz festival by their attendance.

Because of these factors we’ve been privileged to listen to world class musi-cians and able to enjoy a fabulous jazz festival.

Child care centre hosting official opening by Steve Dills

Sylvan Lake News

A “wonderful” first year will be celebrated when Sylvan Lake Child Care Centre hosts its official opening with tours, a barbecue and cake, next Thursday night.

The event is planned in conjunction with the town’s annual Family & Community Information Fair and runs from 5-8 p.m. at the facility behind the community centre, said executive director Tanya Bennett.

The centre, which can handle 34 children

at one time is almost full with just two or three spaces available. Half of the spaces are for young-sters aged 12 months to three years old and the other half for those 3-6 years old.

“We’ve grown a lot from just opening the centre to almost being

accredited,” Bennett said. “We’ve served 53 fami-lies with full-time, part-time or drop-in care so far.”

They’re hoping to request a site visit from Alberta Resource Center for Quality Enhancement (ARCQE) in October. It usually takes six weeks

to get a visit which will lead to accreditation, she said. Accreditation means they’ve taken another step towards offering quality child care, and it qualifies the organization for addi-tional government money for program-ming.

Each of the staff members takes turns planning programming which is reviewed week-ly. It can include art, out-doors and play learning experiences. “We try to follow what the kids are interested in, change to suit their needs,” said Bennett.

A recent field trip to Sobey’s was a real hit, she added. “We’re trying to meet anything they may need to learn before Kindergarten. It’s all through play and build-ing social skills. The social aspect is really important.”

Dear Editor,The recent town hall

meeting hosted by Kerry Towle, MLA for Innisfail-Sylvan Lake, is the first meeting of this kind to be held in Sylvan Lake in the 70 years I have lived here.

Finally we have a voice in the Legislature. A luxury Sylvan Lake has never had before. Thank you Kerry. Many of us were amazed and delighted by the huge attendance of people from town and the sur-rounding rural area.

The Red Deer Advocate reported about 300 people attended; actually the number was 500 to 600 concerned citizens. Kerry had 500 letters for people to sign; these letters will be deliv-ered to the Minister of

Transportation, the Honourable Ric McIver. There were not enough letters for everyone to sign but we have more now.

I believe that well over 100 people from our rural area took the time to attend. They came to voice their dis-may and anger, along with the local citizens, of the way the Department of Transportation has so arrogantly and defiantly responded to this extremely dangerous condition at this inter-section on such a busy highway.

The complete absence of all town officials that were invited to attend this town hall meeting angered the vast majori-ty of those citizens at the meeting. On an open

microphone many were able to voice their con-cerns and most worried about who will pay if there is a cost overrun on the Memorial Trail project.

They would like to know if traffic lights will be installed at Highway 20, 50th Street and 60th Street on Memorial Trail. Will traffic lights be installed on Highway 11 at 60th Street?

There has never, to my knowledge, been any discussion on Memorial Trail with the taxpayers, other than Mayor Samson assuring us that Memorial Trail is a win-win situation for every-one. Many of us do not see this win-win; please enlighten us right away.

Getting back to the Highway 11 and 781

intersection, Kerry Towle urged all of us not to give up the fight for changes at this intersec-tion. We were told that the Minister of Transportation is having trouble with the idea of lights without support from our council. Our council and mayor need to back the citizens that voted them in and the MLA that represents our area, for this to succeed.

We need all the let-ters, phone calls and emails to town officials, Department of Transportation officials, other MLAs in our area, the Minister of Transportation and news media. Please take a few minutes to do the above.

Our town officials seem to feel the closure

of our main access to Sylvan Lake is a dead issue or an issue that is out of their scope. However their support of their taxpayers’ wishes is in their control so let’s prove them wrong and keep fighting. Thanks again to all the people who are trying to right a wrong.

In closing this letter, one final observation. In

2002 the Sylvan Lake Chamber of Commerce lobbied the Department of Trans-portation for traffic lights at 781 — 10 long years ago. In 10 years absolutely nothing has been done to improve the situation, rather it is far worse.

In my mind, and the minds of many more, there is no doubt that had traffic lights been

operating one year ago at 781 the three people who lost their lives may very well be alive today.

Politics is ugly at its best but we are risking people’s lives now and common sense must prevail over ego, arro-gance and political aspi-rations.

Dear Editor,As you are all aware,

there was a town hall meeting in our commu-nity last night to discuss the current state of affairs at the intersection of highway 11 and 781.

There was an over-whelming show of sup-port for the efforts of our MLA Kerry Towle to have the voices of the taxpayers of Sylvan Lake and her constituents heard. From what I understand she has

approached our mayor and town council, the Mi n i s t e r o f Transportation, Alberta Transportation, and our Premier, to pass on the many messages and let-ters of concern from her constituents regarding the current state of the highway accesses into and out of Sylvan Lake.

What is most disturb-ing to me is that there was not one representa-tive of our municipal council in attendance.

Why is that? Are you simply so ashamed of the decisions that you have made regarding this intersection? Or are you simply too arrogant to admit a mistake has been made? Have you forgotten that you were voted in to represent the taxpayers of the Town of Sylvan Lake, not your own individual inter-ests?

From what I under-

stand the grand ‘plan’ for the freeway is 15-20 years down the road. Surely we can come up with a temporary solu-tion until that time, be it lights, a roundabout, a four way stop, lower speed limits, whatever it takes. As it is today it is only a matter of time until that beautiful dis-play of barricades causes a major accident and more loss of life. Is that

what it will take for you to pay attention? First step, remove the barri-cades.

It’s past time you started listening to the residents and taxpayers of your community, and to lobby on our behalf to the Minister of Transportation, Alberta Transportation and our Premier, to reopen that intersection and find a timely and efficient solu-

tion to improve the safe-ty.

I don’t buy the argu-ment that it is done and cannot be undone. Decisions are made and reversed everyday. You are all very well aware of the many concerns there are with this issue.

It’s time you pull your heads out of the sand, swallow your pride, admit you make a mis-take, and do the right

thing. Be our voice, that’s what you were voted in to do. This issue is not going away, do the right thing!

Shari Britton,Sylvan Lake

This letter was also sent to Sylvan Lake’s mayor and councillors, MLA Kerry Towle, Minister of Trans-portation Ric McIver and Premier Alison Redford.

Why no municipal councillors at 781-11 meeting?

Dear Editor,In the Town of Sylvan

Lake there was an infor-mation meeting on the highway 781/11 intersec-tion.

The meeting was attended by Kerry Towle, the Wildrose Party MLA for the Innisfail/Sylvan Lake constituency, along with hundreds of voters (taxpayers) and Liberal candidate Les Vidok who ran against Kerry in the provincial election, also one county councillor — all in attendance to show support and to ask Kerry

to continue their quest to have 781 remain open so that there is a safe way to enter and exit Sylvan Lake

The greatest thing about this meeting was that we finally have an MLA, Kerry Towle, who is willing to listen to the wishes of the voters and that the Liberal candi-date was willing to stand by to have the right thing done. When two parties come together in support of the voters you would hope that Alison Redford would notice and hear

the people with their concerns and not just brush them aside as the government has done for the last 40 years.

The battle over the realignment and twin-ning of 781/11 and the right-in right-out has been going on since Alberta Transportation started twinning Highway 11 in the early 1990s.

Building the RCMP station and fire hall on 781 (50 Street) will increase their response time to anyone living

south on 781 or in the surrounding area. It does not make sense. There needs to be lights or some safe solution to this issue.

The alternative Memorial Trail will move traffic out of and into Sylvan Lake but in turn it has and will cause traffic accidents and congestion at the Highway 20 and 11 intersection.

The cost of this proj-ect sits at $6.4 million and will possibly cost taxpayers even more.

The cost of lights is

anywhere from half a million to a million dol-lars.

Not one member of town council attended the meeting. Some were on vacation but each and every one of them needs to state their stand on this matter. Hopefully, as elected members, they will stand with the voters to raise this issue with the Honourable Ric Mclver, Minister of Transportation.

Garth Wood,Sylvan Lake

A colourful history which began with a modest, humble church building and carried through many years of happy and sometimes sad memories was cele-brated by parishioners of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church Sunday.

His Grace Archbishop Richard Smith, who’s also president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, pre-sided over a service in the church before the celebration moved to the community centre.

He took as the topic for his message, who do we follow.

As we celebrate the Centennial engaged in a retrospective of difficult times and joyful times we can see where God has been in it all guiding us, he said.

Then he spoke of “various messages coun-ter to the Gospel. Consumerism, hedo-nism and so on”, before warning, “there are false

Gods and illusions all around us, a lot of pres-

sure, a lot of seduction, lots of messages that are

dangerous, that lead us away from the Gospel.”

He concluded by call-ing on everyone to “learn to follow Jesus with integrity”.

“Here, as we give thanks to God for all that has happened in the past, let’s gather at the Eucharist and say yes, we will listen to Jesus and no one else.”

Just prior to the end of the service, Smith blessed a stone plaque marking the 100th anni-versary of the church and a banner with the words “My soul glorifies the Lord” and the dates 1912-2012.

The banner was cre-ated by parishioner

Carmen Salsbury and her mother Cecile Gratton.

Afternoon ceremo-nies at the community centre began with din-ner for about 270 people catered by Gifts and Mor Catering.

Mayor Susan Samson, referring to a descrip-

tion of the arrival of the first Catholic colonists in the “Reflections of Sylvan Lake” book, said, “it’s hard to imagine those times as we reflect on how far we have grown, as a church, as a congregation, as a com-munity and as a town. The bonds or the bed-

rock upon which all this is built must be strong, must run deep and must last more than a lifetime. And so it is with Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church and its 100th anniversary today.”

by Steve DillsSylvan Lake News

Sylvan Lake coun-

cillors got an earful Monday night from residents who want the 781-11 intersection

reopened to traffic in all directions.

Wendy Morris said the issue is not dead as

councillors seem to believe.

“The barricades on 781 are going to kill somebody, I’m not going to play stupid … it’s an accident ready to happen,” she said, not-ing foggy and slippery times will play havoc with the cable and posts in the intersection this winter.

Morris also said plans for Memorial Trail aren’t going to solve the problem at the 781 and 11 corner noting people will be entering Highway 20 from Memorial Trail at the top of a hill, which is another concern.

Answering Morris’s concerns, Mayor Susan Samson said council is “very concerned” about the changes and under-stands the concern of citizens. She added that when changes were demanded by citizens a year ago, in the wake of three deaths, Alberta Transportation initially planned to close the intersection.

“It was the work of this council that a com-plete closure was changed to right-in, right-out and with that came money to build Memorial Trail.”

Since that time there hasn’t been one fatality at that intersection, Samson reminded the audience of 14 people.

After receiving a town-commissioned traffic impact study about Memorial Trail changes, Samson said

they went back to the Minis ter of Transportation and were able to secure another $2.2 million for improvements to four intersections. Part of that money will be used to remove the cable and posts in the intersection and replace it with a monolithic curb. The westbound acceleration lane from 781 onto 11 will also be widened and length-ened.

Other changes will take place at Highway 20 and 11 making it similar to the Burnt Lake Trail intersection with defined turning lanes.

Samson also coun-tered the argument that the intersection change led to demise of busi-nesses in the downtown area. “That happened with the arrival of big box stores,” she said. “781 has not impacted downtown any more than when Highway 11 (through town) was downsized to Highway 11A then to Lakeshore Drive and around the park.”

In n i s f a i l - Sy l v a n Lake MLA Kerry Towle stated “it’s not my intention to create heat for Sylvan Lake coun-cillors” but, she added, “my office is being inundated with emails and telephone calls on this issue.” She noted over 400 people attend-ed her town hall meet-ing and she has over 2,500 signatures on

petitions.Towle also chal-

lenged an open letter to citizens posted on the town’s webpage (www.sylvanlake.ca) which indicated councillors weren’t invited to the meeting.

The meeting, she said, was held in her role as a provincial MLA. “As a member of the legislature I repre-sent every single mem-ber of this riding regardless of political stripe. It was not a Wildrose event.”

However she added, the meeting referred to by the town as being “held in a local drink-ing establishment” was a Wildrose event, a post-election debrief session.

Towle said it’s her role as MLA to tell the minister this is not the right solution for resi-dents. “I believe the minister’s hands are tied if the municipal council is not in favour.”

Samson thanked “the opposition Wildrose MLA” and said, “we are not your enemy”. She suggested holding “a meeting with all of us with a media-tor so we can get com-ments out factually”.

“It’s important we work together on this subject,” added Councillor Sean McIntyre. “I’m looking forward to a meeting coming up where we can all discuss this and plan a way forward.”

Dale Mannix told councillors the mood of the meeting last week was one of anger. “If council feels this is a dead issue you’re very, very wrong,” he said.

Samson reiterated. “We’ve gone out and got what we feel is the best safe solution for residents and visitors.”

Betty Osmond, the town’s chief adminis-trative officer, noted paving of Memorial Trail will be completed this fall with intersec-tion improvements completed likely in early spring.

“The bottom line is a number of citizens feel the wrong deci-sions were made. Decisions are changed every year,” said Shari Britton. “We’re asking for your support to make this a safe inter-section.”

Colleen Halwa asked Samson to state wheth-er or not she supports residents lobbying for changes and would bring the issue forward to the Alberta govern-ment.

Samson responded they’ve already had dis-cussions on behalf of the citizens of Sylvan Lake. “Science and engineering were behind it (the changes) and this council’s deci-sion led us to back the experts.”

Continued from page 11She added, “The role of

the church in connecting families and building com-munities was never greater or more valuable than in those formative year.”

Quoting from the his-tory book, she read a refer-

ence to 1911. “Now that there were plenty of hotels, stores and places of amuse-ment, Father Voisin decid-ed that the moment had come to enliven the com-pletely materialistic atmo-sphere by the salutary pres-ence of a church in order to

consolidate the Roman Catholic families in the community.”

“I love that, the salutary presence of a church — the healthful, beneficial pres-ence of a church,” said Samson.

“Church, community,

town. One cannot exist without the other … As we look forward into the future, with the building of a new, larger Catholic Church, we are assured tat the foundations of our community are continually strengthened by your pres-ence,” Samson concluded.

Liam McNiff, on behalf of Red Deer Catholic school board, spoke of the union between the church, priests and École Mother Teresa and Our Lady of the Rosary schools and pledged to work towards continu-ing to build the relation-ships between the schools, church and parish com-munity.

Historian Brian Inglis provided a fascinating and informative look at the church’s evolution since the first Catholic families arrived in the area in 1898

and events that affected its growth and the growth of Sylvan Lake (see his speech in next week’s Sylvan Lake News).

Interspersed between the speeches was entertain-ment provided by Riley Fraser, Maribeth Friesen, the Albach family and Father Gabriel Udeh. Bob Osmond acted as master of ceremonies.

Around the back of the room were story boards along with historic pictures and documents designed to captivate the interest of those attending.

Former parishioners and others attended from

Calgary, Edmonton, Stettler, Olds, Rimbey, Red Deer and Kelowna.

Besides Smith, special guests included Father Paul Kavanagh, director of lit-urgy of the archdiocese and pastor at Assumption in Edmonton, Father Maurice Okolie of St. Stephen’s in Olds, Father Adam Daniluk of Our Lady of Peace in Innisfail, Father Christian Nwaigwe of St. Matthew’s in Rocky Mountain House, Father Donatus Ihekwoaba of Christ-King in Stettler, Father Kyzysztop Sobanski of Paroisse Saint-Thomas d’Aquin of Edmonton,

Deacon Jim Scott and his wife Eileen from St. Stephen’s in Olds, Deacon Don Logan and his wife Margaret from Holy Family Parish in St. Albert, Sister Marlene Schuster, neigh-bours John and Harla Yoos and funeral home director Ed Stevenson.

The Centennial cele-bration committee includ-ed chairperson Gord Duda, Kathy and Brian Inglis, Rina Chu, Muriel Pritchard, Stephanie Pritchard, Kathy Simonot, Johanna Dietrich and pastoral assistant Vivian Coderre with sup-port from the Pastoral Parish Council.

ARIESYou may experience a sudden

increase in your workload. This takes you by surprise and creates new stress. Rest and relaxation will be

necessary once everything is properly organized.

You could become involved in a new circle of friends with whom you are sure to have some truly rewarding

adventures. These people might help you discover a form of spirituality that

appeals to you, for example.

You are naturally a curious person. This curiosity will lead you to unearth a

serious problem, but you will discover some solutions by digging deep.

New clothes, a new hairstyle, and accessories should help you to feel

more at ease in your job. You feel the need to boost your value in other

people’s eyes.

Better eating habits would do you a lot of good. A drastic change in the

pace of your life will allow you to recover all your energy.

It’s possible that you will be offered some additional work, but think

carefully about the pros and cons before accepting. Ask yourself if you will be credited for the work and if it

will it be an asset on your CV.

You might be subjected to a few unexpected changes at work. While

some colleagues could lose their jobs, you will inherit a management position.

You will be in an excellent position to negotiate something that will

earn you a lot of prestige. You could become someone’s hero, even if it’s only because you listened to them.

You are tempted to adopt a whole new life style. Perhaps you’re thinking

of becoming a vegetarian, for example. In fact, your health requires

you to adjust a few of your habits.

You will put yourself in work and personal situations where you can

converse with a great many people. This will enable you to enlarge your

social network.

If you have taken steps in order to obtain financing for a professional

project or to purchase a home, you will receive a positive

answer that will set the whole process in motion.

Nursing shin splints, Bryan Carruthers said he underestimated the toll his participation in a record setting attempt to play the longest continuous basket-ball game would take on his body.

“It’s the first time I’ve done something like this,” he said of the game in Spruce Grove last week. “It was definitely a learning curve, I underestimated, didn’t think it would be as bad as it was. Everybody took a hit on their body,” he said noting he was in better shape than some of the other 23 players.

According to rules from the Guinness Book of Records, the players were able to bank five minutes off for every hour they played. Therefore every night there was a two hour

period when no basketball was played and everyone slept.

The players finished their marathon feat at 1 p.m. last Friday after clock-ing 113 hours of activity. They started Sunday, Aug. 19 at 8 p.m.

There were 12 players per team so when some of the team weren’t playing they were able to rest or sleep. Carruthers said he played two hour shifts and then usually had two hours off.

He was joined in the game by another Sylvan Laker, Dallas Hancox.

The white team defeat-ed the blue team by a score of 9,516 to 9,508.

When the idea was first kicked around, the Guinness World Record stood at 107 hours, done in Romania by a group of 24 players. However, more recently that mark was

unofficially eclipsed by a group out of St. Louis who played for 112 hours and two minutes.

The game was a fund-raiser for Operation Amigo which sends mission trips to Juárez, Mexico to build houses, schools and churches in poorer areas.

Their fundraising goal was $100,000 but by the time they’d finished play, about $8,000 had been raised. That didn’t bother Carruthers who said there’s more money coming and funds will continue to be collected.

Asked how he got involved in the event which took place at Living Waters Christian Academy in Spruce Grove, he said it was cousins who live in the area who helped organize it through Stony Plain Basketball. The school and gym were donated free of charge and there were lots

of good sponsors from the area, said Carruthers.

He also went to Mexico last fall as part of a group of 10 people on a mission trip from Stony Plain Basketball to teach basketball to youngsters in Juárez.

On the Stony Plain Basketball site he wrote of last year’s trip as “one of the most exciting and life changing trips I had ever been on”.

“The one main thing that I learned on the Mexico basketball missions trip is that I really didn’t understand how lucky I actually was to have every-thing I did until I went to Juarez Mexico.”

Despite their desolate surroundings, Carruthers described the happiness of the youngsters as unbeliev-able, stating he never saw them or their parents with-out a smile.

He’s planning to go

back to Juárez in November.

The community, he said, is going through a lot of hardship with drug wars. It’s war-torn with a lot of corruption, a very danger-ous area with high security alerts. But they stay in a locked compound where he feels “very safe” and they go everywhere in big groups.

“We’re not going for a holiday by any means.”

Operation Amigo was started by Carruthers’ grandparents, Al and Miriam Carruthers of Sylvan Lake, over 20 years ago after they travelled to the area and began helping its people.

They continue their involvement in the organi-zation which has been responsible for building many homes, churches, dorms and a complete school. Other projects have

included building and equipping part of an orphanage as well as wom-en’s rehab and men’s rehab living-in centres. The orga-

nization funds all the school staff with Mexican teachers, according to its website (www.operation-amigo.org).

While the Olympics were going on in London in July, local young ath-letes were striving for excellence in the Alberta Summer Games.

Four swimmers from Sylvan were chosen to represent Zone 4 in Lethbridge. “Bring it” was the theme for the 2012 Summer Games and these four swim-

mers were definitely up to the challenge. They brought all they had to the pool and did a great job at representing this community and zone.

Sylvan Lake Nautical Amber Carson (13) swam in six individual events and three relays. She took the gold medal for 200m butterfly get-ting a 14 year old ‘A’ time. Amber swam the 100m fly placing fifth, the 50m fly placing sev-enth and earning a 13

year old ‘A’ time. She also swam the 100m, 200m, 800m freestyle pushing herself to the max each and every length, and achieving five out of six best times and one club record. Amber was also a key member of three relays which placed fourth, fifth and seventh.

Elizabeth Moore (11), also from the Nauticals, swam six individual events and two relays. She was a

gold medalist in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke obtaining a 13 year old ‘A’ time in her 100m breaststroke swim.

Elizabeth took the silver medal for the 400m Individual med-ley and a bronze for the 1500m freestyle. In her last two races, the 50m breaststroke and the 200m butterfly she came in fourth giving it all her best effort, getting a 12 year old ‘A’ time in the breaststroke. Elizabeth achieved six personal best times and broke six club records throughout the weekend. Her two relay teams took both silver and a bronze and silver medal.

Also from Sylvan Lake, but swimming

with the Red Deer Catalina Swim Club, were Matthew Gauthier (13) and Tyler Gauthier (13). Matthew swam six individual events and one relay. He swam the 50m, 100m, 400m free-style, 100m butterfly placing eighth and 200m butterfly placing sixth and the 400m individual medley. Matthew achieved two best times and was a key player in his relay.

Tyler Gauthier (13) swam the 800m free-style placing tenth, the 50m and 100m breast-stroke and 200m breast-stroke placing ninth, the 200m butterfly coming in seventh and the 50m backstroke. Tyler had a great week-end, achieved four best

times and was instru-mental in the success of his relay team.

Special thanks to our coaches, Sharon Burns and Mike Miller who

stepped up and volun-teered their time and expertise to make this an event that our swim-mers will remember forever.

As if seeing some-one shot several feet into the air with jets of water wasn’t enough, the person in question was none other than Rick Mercer, who was in Sylvan Lake Monday at the marina filming the Rick Mercer Report for CBC TV.

Mercer tried Flyboarding, a new water sport which pro-pels its users up to nine metres (30 feet) in the air with water jets on their hands and feet. The Flyboard is used in conjunction with a Sea-Doo.

“I’m moderately ter-rified, on my terrified scale,” said Mercer before taking to the water. “It’s a jet pack

that’s propelled by water.”

Mercer became interested in Flyboarding after see-ing an internet video of the sport.

“Someone said look

at this, it’s absolutely crazy,” said Mercer.

A Rick Mercer Report representative contacted cousins Brody and Stephanie Wells. They run NBD Watersports, the first

Flyboard dealer in Alberta and one of the first in Canada. Like Mercer, they first became aware of the sport through an inter-net video. After talk-ing, they decided to go to Florida, the centre of North American Flyboard distribution, to become certified instructors.

“These people are the pioneers in Canada,” said Mercer. “We did our due diligence, this was the place to do it. This was our absolute first choice.”

Mercer’s Fly-boarding experience will be broadcasted during the coming tenth season of the Rick Mercer Report.

“I think I’ll be intro-ducing a lot of people to the sport, and if it’s in a beautiful location then it’s my idea of a perfect shoot. I think we have three for three here,” said Mercer.

Stephanie said Mercer took to the

sport well, and kept everyone laughing.

“It was awesome. I couldn’t stop laughing all day. He’s so funny,” she said.

Brody and Stephanie have been demonstrat-ing Flyboarding all summer on lakes around Alberta and British Columbia.

“Everybody’s always so amazed,” said Stephanie, adding that traffic on a bridge over Lake Chestermere stopped as people came to watch the demon-stration. “Everybody just thinks it’s really neat and wants to try it.”

Stephanie said bal-ance is important for Flyboarding, along with some strength and stamina. She added that while many people think the sport is dan-gerous, it’s no more dangerous than other water sports.

Stephanie said Flyboarding feels “sur-real”, and that it “feels

like you’re floating”. The Flyboard web-

site describes the sport as a combination of jetskiing, snowboard-

ing, and acrobatic div-ing.

“It’s unlike any other water sport,” said Brody.
