This survey course investigates British literary culture from its origins to the 18 thcentury. The

emphasis is on an interdisciplinary approach, with substantial attention being paid to art

history, the wider historical and political context and the development of other European

literatures. The purpose of this survey is thus to guide students to a well-informed

appreciation of literary texts in English, based on stimulating historical, social and literary

context sections for each lecture. The course follows a roughly chronological approach,

promoting students awareness of cultural!historical contexts.
