RESEARCH INTERESTS
The main focus of the Microbiology & Public Health Laboratory (PHL) is to use high-
throughput sequencing and other functional genomic technologies to understand the biology and
genomic diversity of gut and respiratory bacterial pathogens with significant impact on human
and animal health. With better understanding of ecological and environmental niche, developing
rapid assays (including nanodiagnsotics) for surveillance/source tracking of pathogens as well as
control strategies such as vaccines is another research interest. My lab uses primarily genetic and
molecular techniques to characterize environmental isolates (Biotechnology Applications),
pathogens, study their biofilm formation and drug resistance capabilities as well as their control
using safe nanomaterials. More recent funding allows an opportunity to determine the
association of typical microbiota and its impact on host immune cascades to influence diseases
such as Colorectal Cancer and Stunted Growth. Specifically, I am interested in:
1. Epidemiological investigation and molecular pathogenesis of commonly occurring pathogens
such as B. pertussis/parapertussis, V. cholerae, E. coli, C. jejuni, Salmonella spp, Shigella
spp, K. pneumoniae, P. aeroginosa, A. baumanii, S. auresu, M. tuberculosis
2. Study of the molecular mechanisms of drug resistance in community and hospital acquired
infections & Controlling Superbugs(Using Phage, Probiotics and Nanomaterials)
3. Vaccine development (Glycoengineering)
4. Microbiome in assocation with Disease & Health
5. Developing Biosensors based on bioreporters such as fluorescent molecules HriGFP &
HriCFP
6. Extremophiles & Their Biotechnology Applications: Bioremediation to Industrial
Applications
Research Highlights
My work in field of infectious diseases such as whooping cough and Diarrhea are of significant
importance and will serve the basis of their control in future in Pakistan. My research on
whooping cough was covered by media/science division “Whooping Cough Resurgence in Sindh
Province" published in SciDev.Net: http://www.scidev.net/en/health/infectious-
diseases/news/whooping-cough-found-in-vaccinated-children-in-pakistan). First Pakistani to
initiate the extensive sequencing projects most notably of Diarrheal pathogens. Identified novel
fluorescent proteins HriCFP & HriGFP and these proteins have vast potential applications for
researchers, being the shortest molecular fluorescent proteins. I am currently developing rapid
diagnostic tests and Biosensors for detecting pathogens and environmental pollutants such as
pesticides and heavy metals. In addition, developing control strategies such as using natural
pathogen predators i.e. probiotics, bacteriophages as well as vaccines are other research areas of
interest. I am editor of various scientific journals and member of various national and
international societies/forums. I have delivered invited talks at various national and international
forums and also chaired sessions at various national and international forums such as
“Informatics & Basic Science” at Microbial Forensics conference, Zagreb. My students won best
poster awards on many occasions such as UNESCO’s World Science Day; 6th Annual Public
Health Scientific Conference-Health Academy, Islamabad.
