ELYSIAN FIELDS // EPHEMERA TRIO7.30pm Monday 13 November, Foundry 616ELYSIAN FIELDS

“A head-spinning dialogue between half a millennium ago andnow” – John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald

Elysian Fields is an ongoing experiment in creating new improvisedand composed repertoire for the electric viola da gamba, of whichJenny Eriksson is believed to be the only Australian exponent. Widelyrecognised as one of this country’s leading viola da gambists (aseven-string, bowed Baroque instrument) and an expert on the musicof its era, Jenny has performed and toured across Australia andaround the globe. Jenny has also performed and recorded with jazzand world music artists for many years. Prior to Elysian Fields, hercollaborators included Llew and Mara Kiek and Steve Elphick from theMara! band, horn player and composer Paul Cutlan, Joseph Tawadros,Kevin Hunt, and more.

The backbone of Elysian Fields’ performances comprises originalworks written specifically for its line-up, such as Matt McMahon’s ForThomas Wyatt – “eloquently elegiac, its melody Celtic, its tone dark;electric viola da gamba, piano and bass guitar in melancholyembrace”. The band’s covers range widely from Eriksson’s uniquearrangements of French Baroque composer Marin Marais to chartsand folk songs that reflect her Scandinavian heritage, such as

SOME OF TWO PARTS // ANGELA DAVIS QUARTET8.30pm Tuesday 14 November, Foundry 616

SOME OF TWO PARTS

“Immediately engaging on so many levels… a narrative thatembraces contemporary classical, European folk, and jazz.” – Guy Strazz

Five years in the making, Some of Two Parts is the exciting all-originalduo improvisations of saxophonist Loretta Palmeiro withaccomplished pianist and composer Mark Isaacs. From a bedrock ofjazz and contemporary classical music, they play with folkloricelements and qualities of the Iberian peninsula such as flamenco andfado.

Co-founder of the Spyglass Gypsies and director of Alma Orquestra,Loretta plays with Mara, the Divergence and Sydney Jazz Orchestras, the Australian Symphony Orchestra, and is a casual musician with theQSO. Both Loretta and Mark’s musical studies originated in theclassical hemisphere and have been coupled with an explorativepassion for improvised music.

Mark has been exploring the spirit of duende, the dark and soulfulcurrent that runs through the most animated music. In meeting andplaying spontaneous inventions with versatile saxophonist Loretta hefound a like-minded soul and a spirited duo was born. The results canbe passionate, furious, brash, delicate.LORETTA PALMEIRO soprano saxophone MARK ISAACS piano
