Welcome to SydMUN2010 at the University of Sydney. Since its inauguration in 2006, SydMUN has built a reputation for providing quality debate and bringing together some of the best Model UN delegates and directors in Australia. The 2010 Secretariat endeavours to uphold this rich tradition and is privileged to share this rewarding experience with you.This year, we explore transformation and change on a global scale. Economic and security crises have emerged rapidly in recent times, while a decline in the public’s trust of leaders and institutions has created widespread uncertainty in many regions. It is in these circumstances that the urgency of fighting poverty and resolving volatile flashpoints is made clear. Committee sessions will test your innovation, creativity and leadership as you work together to address the challenges which lie ahead.Beyond this, SydMUN is also about meeting like-minded individuals and establishing a broad network of good friendships. A series of exciting socials and catered lunches have been planned for you, so make the most of them to get to your fellow delegates and directors, or have a chat with a coffee-powered Secretariat member.This conference has been made possible by the generous support of our Host Sponsor – the USyd Department of Government and International Relations, and our Premier Sponsor – AusAID. Message from the Secretary General

The Department of Government and International Relations is a large and active group of students, teachers, and researchers covering most aspects of government and politics. It is a comprehensive department of political science.

Its work reflects current developments and activities in the ever changing world of politics, but it offers in-depth perspectives that go to the enduring structures that determine the day-to-day reality of government, politics, and international relations. Politics is always local and it is never local. That is the paradox that political science unpacks. Everything arises in a local context and everything has implications that go beyond the local in time or in space. Terrorism, globalization, voting and elections, environmentalism, immigration, defence, ethics, leadership, power, prime ministers, gender, human rights, political parties, the rise of China, these are only some of the specifics analysed in the Department. At the same time, the Department does not lose sight of the fundamentals and so Plato, Aristotle, Thucydides, Niccolo Machiavelli, Harriet Taylor, John Stuart Mill, Ayn Rand, Hannah Arendt, and many other enduring thinkers also play a part in teaching and research.

In 1910 the University first recognized political science and it has been offered continuously since then. When students join us today they are also joining the thousands of alumni who have majored in Government and International Relations, done Honours in Government and International Relations, or a post graduate degree in either a professional or research masters, or a PhD.

December 3, FridayDress code: Smart casual for all Friday afternoon events.

10 am-12 pm: Model United Nations Societies’ Meeting, Law Seminar Room 117Only invited societies’ delegates need to attend this session.

1 -3 pm: Directors’ Briefing, Law Seminar Room 117Only committee directors need to attend to this session. 3 -5 pm: Conference Registration, Law School FoyerAll delegates should attend to register, meet their committee directors, and receive their badges, placards and show-bags. This process should only take you about 10 minutes.Photo ID is required for registration: valid Australian driver’s license or passport. If you cannot attend on Friday, there will be a supplementary registration session at 8:30am on Saturday morning, but we strongly encourage you to attend on Friday.

4 -5 pm: Rules Briefing, Law School Lecture Theatre 101For those delegates who have not participated in Model UN before, or would like a refresher, we will have a quick run-through of the rules of procedure for committees.

5 – 6 pm: Opening Ceremony, Law School Lecture Theatre 101Our opening ceremony will provide a chance to welcome all delegates to the University and introduce them to their committee directors.

Conference Dinner at Sky Phoenix Restaurant This year instead of the traditional committee dinners at separate restaurants, the entire conference will be enjoying a Chinese banquet at the exclusive and newly renovated Sky Phoenix Restaurant, located in the t of the Sydney CBD.

With tables allocated according to committees, the usual committee dinner’s function will still be served, enabling you to meet your fellow committee members, with whom you will be working for the next two days, in a relaxed and informal setting.

Time: 7-9 pm. Dress code: Smart casual.Directions: Enter via the Pitt Street Mall Entrance; next to Sportsgirl and Soul Pattinson Chemist.Costs: Dinner costs are covered in the conference fee (water and tea inclusive). Other drinks are to be purchased independently.

Arrangements can be made for special dietary requirements. Please contact our USG Socials, Sarah Nguyen at socials.sydmun@usydunsociety.org to confirm your needs.

Directions: Catch any 400-series bus from Parramatta Road or City Road bus stops to City (QVB bus stop). Then walk to Centrepoint tower. Any delegates unsure of directions are welcome to follow the secretariat from the Opening Ceremony to the dinner venue.

It is recomended that Travel passes as they are not available Monday-Friday 7AM-7PM.

Post-dinner cocktails at the Republic HotelFrom 9pm onwards, we will move onto some casual cocktails at a bar a few blocks from Sky Phoenix, also in the heart of Sydney. The Republic, corner of Pitt and Bridge Streets, Sydney City. Dress code: Smart casualCosts: As this is an informal night, no bar tab is provided.Remember to bring your ID. Unfortunately under-18s will not be admitted into this venue.

Directions: From Centrepoint tower, walk north down Pitt St (towards Circular Quay wharf), for approximately 5-10 minutes.

5 – 7.30 pmFree time for dinner and transport

Between the end of the committee session and the start of the night’s social event, you’ll need to grab some dinner and head to Kings Cross where the venue is located (see venue details in the next section). There will not be any food served at the social event.

December 4, Saturday

Dinner options are plentiful and budget friendly in the nearby suburbs to the university of Newtown and Glebe. Or grab dinner anywhere in the city or Darlinghurst (next to Kings Cross) on the way to the socials venue.

Some suggested options for transport are provided below. To get an idea of the relative locations of the university, Redfern and Central stations and Kings Cross, check out the maps at the end of this guide.

Public Transport: The quickest way to reach Kings Cross is by train. You can catch a train to Kings Cross Station from Redfern, Central or Town Hall stations. Trains arrive every 10-15 minutes, and the trip to Kings Cross takes approximately 5-10 minutes.

Taxis: You should have no trouble hailing a cab on a busy road like King St or Parramatta Road. Call: ABC – 132522, Silver Service 133 100, Premier – 131017 or Taxis Combined 1333300 or www.taxiscombined.com.au

Social event at Kit and Kaboodle From 7.30 pm, this will be your chance to kick back and unwind after a day of intense negotiations, and perhaps for the most devoted diplomats, engage in a little “after-dark lobbying”.The address is Kit and Kaboodle, 33-37 Darlinghurst Road, Potts Point.

Dress code: Smart casual, or feel free to stay in your business dress after committee.A bar tab will be provided, covering beer, wine and soft drinks. We will provide more details at the conference.Names will be signed off at the door. If you come after 9PM, you may have to pay a cover fee so please aim to arrive on time. Kings Cross can be a dangerous area at night so make sure you travel with someone or in a group.Remember to bring your ID. Unfortunately under-18s will not be admitted into this venue.

Directions: From Kings Cross Station, turn right and walk up Darlinghurst road for approximately 200 metres.

9 am – 12 pmCommittee session 3, Committee rooms in Sydney Law SchoolDebate will continue in the same rooms as before.

12 – 1 pmLunch - Delegates are treated to a catered lunch

1 – 4 pmCommittee session 4, Committee rooms in Sydney Law SchoolOur final session of debate will occur in the same rooms as before.

4 – 5 pmClosing ceremony, Eastern Avenue Lecture TheatreThis will be a time to sum up the conference proceedings. One delegate from each committee will present a summary of the debate that occurred on their topic. We will also award outstanding delegate prizes to the persons in each committee who demonstrated diplomatic skill, a spirit of engagement, and made the greatest contribution to committee proceedings.

This concludes the conference. Delegates can meet up for some informal drinks at a nearby café. Post-conference drinks at The Broadway Cafe

From 5pm, we will be meeting for a quiet beverage after a packed weekend. The Bank Hotel, 324 King Street, Newtown Dress code: Casual, or business attire from committee Costs: As this is an informal night, no bar tab or food is provided.

December 5, Sunday

Dress codesAll committee sessions will require business attire (business suit with shirt and/or tie for men and skirt, dress or pant suit/shirt for women). Wearing of your country’s national dress is discouraged. Feel free, however, to bring custom notepaper, flags, or other decorations for your desk.

‘Smart casual’ for men should include a collared shirt and long pants, with good shoes (no thongs or sneakers). Like most cities, Sydney is full of moody bouncers and we would hate to see anyone excluded from any of the social events.

Road namesNote that Parramatta Road, Broadway and George Street are all different sections of one extended road. The same is true of King Street, City Road and the Princes Highway.

Safety and securityRedfern can be a relatively dangerous area late at night, and we would advise against walking to the station there, especially alone. A safer option is to catch a bus to Central.The campus security emergency number (24 hours) is 9351 3333. More information on safety is available on their website, www.security.usyd.edu.au.

Kings Cross can also be relatively dangerous at night if alone. We recommend going to the social event with someone or in a group. In case of emergency call 000 for Police or Ambulance services. Under 18s at Socials

Unfortunately due to the nature of the venues under-18s will be unable to attend the social events at the Republic Hotel and Kit and Kaboodle. They will however be able to attend the conference dinner at Sky Phoenix Restaurant.

LaptopsIf you have access to a laptop, bring it to SydMUN– with the fast pace of committees, online resources and the need to draft documents – a laptop will enhance your experience significantly.

InternetAt SydMUN 2010 all delegates will have access to the Sydney University wireless network – providing free unlimited Internet access. For the user name and password, refer to the email send to your by the committees team or ask your director.

PowerThere will naturally be power-points for laptops in committee rooms however, to make access to these limited outlets possible, if you have one it is a good idea to bring a double adapter or power board to assist in making power available to all.

PrintingSydMUN 2010 is committed to environmental sustainability; we strongly encourage delegates to keep resolution writing and preparation in electronic form as much as possible.

Remember to make use of your committee’s file storage site to share committee documents. For specific information on the file storage site, refer to the email send to your by the committees team or ask your director.

If you do have documents to print directors will be able to print them through the Conference’s central print hub. If there is information i.e. position papers and research you would like in hard copy – please print this before you arrive

Transport Details – from City to University of Sydney Buses: For stops on Parramatta Road (closest to the Quadrangle) catch routes 412, 413, 435, 436, 437, 438, 440, 461, 480 from George Street or Railway Square.

For stops on City Road (closest to Darlington Campus) catch routes 422, 423, 426, 428 from Castlereagh Street or Railway Square.

Trains: Walk from Redfern central (the route is outlined in a map attached to end of this guide).
