Transcript of SXSW Save the Web. Save the World.
Right now, you are using one of humankind’s crowning
engineering achievements.
The Internet.
You have tremendous access to information from around the globe.
You can read this webpage.
You can read any webpage out of millions of others.
You could create your own webpage,
without any one else knowing or interfering.
But…
What if authoritarian governments could stop you?
What about democratic ones?
For profit companies?
Vigilantes?!
When we log onto the Internet most of us take for granted the right we have to
write and say whatever we want.
However, from bulk surveillance to Network Neutrality to DDoS-as-censorship, bloggers, activists,
journalists, free thinkers, and everyday web surfers around the world are
being censored and taken offline just because the guy with the bigger stick
doesn’t agree with their point-of-view.
The Internet was built for all of us, not just the powerful, but like with any
resource people will try to take advantage of it for their own gain.
If you use the internet or care about people who do,
this panel will show how to protect the most important basic human rights online, how to expand and preserve
those rights, and how to get involved.
