She was 7 lbs.,12oz and 21” long. Melodie and Tristan Smith are loving being parents! SAFETY! SWOCC ICE CARVERS IN ALASKA! Chris Foltz and Jillian Howell won 6th place and Artists Choice for their single block sculptor in Alaska this past weekend. She also won the People’s Choice award at the local Iron Chef competition (she received 75 out of 100 votes). Tara was assissted by her amazing sous chef Rotarian Trish McMichael. The menu had a Hawaiian theme. CHEF DARRELL FOLCK was nominated for Pastry Chef of the Year and will compete at Regional’s in Idaho in April. OCCI’s CULINARY TEAM won a Silver Medal at State in Portland and will now move onto Regional’s in Idaho in April. CAMPUS NEWS & KUDOS HAPPY END OF WINTER TERM PHI THETA KAPPA Southwestern’s Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the world’s largest association of college honor students, held a formal induction ceremony on February 12. So far during the 2012-13 academic year, the chapter has inducted 25 new members. Members will conduct a membership drive during spring term in hopes of establishing a stronger presence on both Coos and Curry campuses so that more Southwestern students may experience the many benefits of PTK membership. From resume writing and other general job-hunting guidance to specific career preparation books covering 20 different fields, the career collection can help you get your foot in the door. Nursing, physical training, journalism, green careers and music are just a few of the fields covered. David Abrams’ speaks in Coos Bay, Bandon and Lakeside public libraries, May 13 and 14, 2013. All libraries have multiple copies of FOBBIT, plus the unabridged CD version is available as well. The book also can be purchased at a substantial dis- count at Books By The Bay in North Bend and Winter River Books in Bandon In the satirical tradition of Catch-22 and M*A*S*H, FOBBIT takes us into the chaotic world of Baghdad’s Forward Operating Base Triumph. Darkly humorous and based on the author’s own experiences in Iraq, FOBBIT, is a fantas- tic debut that shows us a behind-the-scenes portrait of the real Iraq war. Their story is a tragedy and a beautiful story. When our family learned of their story, I was a young girl and now I can share with you my research. I was recently published in the Titanic Historical Society’s Journal in this past 4th quarter issue: my first major publication. Of all the things I have tried in my life, I have found that writing is what I really want to do. I want to thank all of you for being in my life and supporting me in the capacities that you did. Dearest Friends and Family,This year marks the 100-year anniversary of the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic! Many of you don’t know that my great-great aunt Mary (McDougald) Fortune was a survivor along with her three daughters: Ethel, Alice, and Mabel. Their story is a tragedy and a beautiful story. When our family learned of their story, I was a young girl and now I can share with you my research.
