Editorial (February 2nd) Dear friends,

Also in this year's February SWN issue, we are happy and proud to be able to present for you an imense amount of SW-tips. Thanks to all our faith- full members who send their contributions to us month after month, but also thanks to the recent held DX-Camp in Bavaria, West Germany. Similar to last year, this DX-Camp, who had many DXSWCI members as participants, send us their loggings (mainly on the Tropical Bands), so that we are able to present you an almost complete survey, on what's heard on the Shortwave bands right now. Thanks you to all of you both here - and there.

The February SWN is almost complete, I got the last pages Saturday, and only (once again) the Utility Shack is missing. There have been some misunderstanding about the new editor, who succed Conny Brodin. Now the problem should be solved, as our British member, Mike Dawson has become the new editor. Unfortu- nately he got my letter just too late to make an Utility section in this issue of SWN, but he promise that from March there will be a regular section. So don't hesitate to send us your contributions also for this section, either direct to Mike (address on page 2) or via the hq (you know the address!). I want to bid Mike welcome as the new Utility editor, and look forward for a good co-operation.

With the Utility Shack missing, we had just space for a very interesting article, made and written by Hermod Pedersen of Sweden about the Solar-terrestrial conditions and its influence on the Shortwave Bands. As written, it is a very interesting article which I urge you to read, to get more background information on how the "whole thing" works on Shortwave.

Unfortunately our printer had put the wrong pagenumbers on 4 of the pages of the January SWN, however I hope that you could find out of it anyway. Of course I'll tell him to be more careful when putting those pagenumbers on the different pages. I can tell you, that I just mark the different pages with the number it should have on the backside of the pages, and so he write the number on the page in the right lower corner.

Finally, let me just tell you, that still I have not heard anything from Ken Baird nor Simon Luttrell about the Unofficial pages, though I had send them material the past 2 months. Anybody knows what happen to these guys?

OMAN Radio Oman is now using another SW txer : in parallel to the service in Arabic on 15205 from 0930-1800 the frequency 7145 can be heard. (Ed: seems to vary slightly) E

For 20 years Christians prayed for the establishment of a Christian radio station in Southern Africa. These prayers were answered in 1973, when His Malesty the late King Sobhuza II of Swariland granted a broadcasting permit to Trans World Radio.

The Station Broadcasts began in November 1974. From the

one short wave transmitter In 1974, the Station has grown to 5 short wave transmitters and a medium wave transmitter which, together with the transmitting aerials, are dedicated solely tc the prCClamatlcn Of the gospel into Central, East and Southern Africa and to Asia.

This Is like having 6 radio stations in one locatlon. Durinp prime listening hours, each transmitter may broadcast a different programme in a different language, to a different part of the continent at the same time.

The Studio Manzini, the hub of Swaziland, Is the locqion of

the offices and studios of Trans World Radio. Programmes are received in mere than 20 languages from studios in many countries. In Manzinl they are prepared for broadcast from the station. All programming is reviewed for technical quality and content to ensure that it effectively communicates the message.

The Staff A devoted multi-national staff of mere than 60

people combine skills and talents to prepare programmes, operate and maintain transmitters. and administer the work. Although coming from a wide variety of backgrounds, there is unity of purpose and hope for the future, with the firm belief that Jesus Christ is not only the answer tc the needs of Africa, but of the whole world.

The new radio station emoloved twosnnouncers. Mr D. Mokaila and Mr D. Moeketsi. A Briton. Mr Norman England was a reporter. who collected and edited his own news. There was also a driver and 8 mesaenaer.

In 1965. when therewasa big move from Mateking to Gaborone. the new capital of Botswana. Radio ZNB also moved Its aging 5 kW t rSnSmittSr to

Gaborone. The transmitter was housed in a make- shiftshelterneartheGaboronePower Statlonanda fairsized room was hired in the Information building in the Malt to beusedasastudio. Anadditional room was hired in the Telephone Exchange building and this was used as an office.

The new radio station. then known as Radio Bechuanaland developed rapidly and in due course in the same year. a site for transmitters was located at Sebale. about 13 km from Gaborone and a 1OkW shortwave transmitter and appropriate antennas were acquired. The new transmitter needed a good studioandassuchaplacetoraBroadcasting House was sited where the Bank of Botswana is located tdday.

Early 1968. the new government voted the sum Of 20 thousand pounds sterling for the building of the planned Broadcastina House. but it turned out that ihe amount was not-mvwgh for the building and equipment that would be required for a radiostation. no matter how small.

“Xizzen” radio used to be monitored at 11 o’clock in the evening and the task of translation was given to Mr D. Mokaila and Mr L. Moumakwa. thus adding up to three, the number of people whose voices were heard over Radio ZND, the first person to be heard over radio ZND being Mr Coombes.

In 1863. Radio ZND moved to Lobatse, where its call changed to ZNB. The new small radio station inherited the 5 kW transmitter from ZND. Mr D.

house finally became Broadcasting House, marking what could be described as the end of the first chapter In the history of Radio Botswana.

After acquiring the new Broadcasting House Building and a site for the transmitters. the newly born station embarked on a massive programme of strengthening Its signal and improving its coverage.

Another10 kWshortwave. 1 kW mediumwaveand a small (50 watt) VHF/FM transmitter were commlssioned,quicklytollowed bytheadditlonot a new 50 kW msdium wave transmitter. These transmitters gave valiant service up until the next wave of expansion which started in 1991. This included the addition of a further 50 kW medium wavetortheCentral Districralong with two5 kW FM outlets, one programmed iri stereo, and tour 50 kW shortwave units operstlng iinto new log-aperiodic sntennas.

Radio Botswana could n~ow claim to be clearly heard throughout the country. but plans to give the more densely populated areas the advantage of FM reception are well advance0 with the provison of six more unattended stations already under way and a further nine in the plpelins

All Radio Botswana news bulletins are prepared in EnglishandtransletedintoSetswana. Eachversion takes ten minutes. Radio Desk has three main news sources. the Botswana Press Agency. Reuters and Agence France Presse.

Radio Desk falls under the News and Current Affairs Section of the Programmes Dwision. This section also supervises Translation Pool and Newsreel Programme.

From that time, I have bought and sold several receivera. Among the ones recently: a Drake R&C, a Kenwood R-loo, a Drake r7/DR7 and an ICOM R7lE. Since the beginning of 1985, I got a NRD 515, of the J.R.C. which give me very good reaulte, using a long-wire antenna of 25 metres and an indoor antenna of 6 meters coupled with an HP amplifler.

I listen on trouioal bands. mainlv stations of Central Amerioa, South America and Africa. Aiso, I am intOrO6ted with the maritime stations and with the amateur radio stations- I have received QSL'8 from all the Part6 of the World.

In autumn 1985, I have purchased the twa printed cirauit boar& offered by the Danish firm ESKA for improve the NRD 515 and I have mounted theee items inside my reoeiver.

There are 5 Kilter6 on these two PCB's for improvment detector derived from the item of the Drake R7, permitting the reception of the AM signals in SSB, usingthe ECSS procedure, and that with a superior quality of hearing.

Four of these filters: 4.5, 2.1, 1.4 and 0.3 khz have a a 6/6a dB shape factor of l/1,7, the came of that of the filters of the Drake R7. In DXing, they allow to manter hard QRMs. Besides, the additional circuits of ESKA incr686e the arigiual signal to noise ratio of the NRD 515 by 1odB.

I affirm that the value of my reaeiver has been increased by at least F% after the afore mentioned transformation. And here is the end of my letter. (the ideal would be to find a built-in notch filter like thO4b in some old Drake receirers like the model RAB). However, a4 oorrectly said by Hr. Pi&g, thin kind of filter4 produce an audio dietorsion in Am. About the filters, I think that two filter4 6 khc and 2.7 khz am 4ufficlant bither for a SWL or fBr a serious DXc! The 6 khs haa a right dynamic for the listening of strdng signala and musio.

The 2,6 khz is perfoot for the DX hunting, perhaps too 4harp in Am mode, but simply perfbct to ueb in SSB and in BCSS with the Pass Band Tuning, reducing brbrg kind of in- terference. Unfortunately, the special technical construc- tion of the 5RC reoblrbr dOb4 no allow. to u4e the PElTin AN mode, and this is the only fault that I found in this receivbr (evbn If, for mome months, I have read what the Danlag ESCA is introducing 4ome modifioatioas at the JRC 515, to improve the quality and to solve problems like thi44 why don't you, Andrbas, speak about it in next number of mm?).

HOWbVbr, concluding this littlb survey about thb JRC receiver, should be said that the receiver ham got an In- oredible st4bility 4nsintalning the frequency for many hours, and for the wb that I oan do with it, in mefium waves and tropioal bands, it give4 excellent results.

A4 you were able to 4ee, I have no system about DB, or kind of filters, or intermodulation, or intercept point, or dinaraic range, etc. because I think that the better way to study a rec*irer is to u4e it practically. Our greatest interest should be to listen and not to measure the number of buttona ot to study thb results of laboratory tests.

Solar-terrestrial conditions for 13 September were solar flux 70 and estimated A-index 10; repeat so- lar flux 70 and A-index 10. The Boulder K-index at 2100 UTC on 14 September was 0, repeat 0. The solar activity for the last 24 hours was very low, the geomagnetic field was quiet. The forecast for the next 24 hours: the solar activity will continue ve- ry low, the geomagnetic field will be unsettled to active.

That was the message some time ago from the N*- tionel Bureau of Stendars in Colorado. USA. From all this, as it may seem, balderdash we DXers may gather a lot of value. We can learn how good radio conditions are at the moment and also how good they may be the next month. This information simply gives en answer to the question:

Shall I listen tonight or nay I as well go to bed for a good nights sleep?

And that is always nice to know early in the eve- ning, isn't it?

You will also be able to tell which weekend you ought to choose for a DXpedition - weeks in advan- ce! Or. for that matter, when you shouldn't plan one at all.

And that is also nice to know at an early stage.

All you need is practically these three values:

q A index. 0 K index. 0 Solar flux.

The only problem could be to get hold of these va- lues while they are still of value. It not, it will be a tough, and listless, endeavour to try to pre- dict the coming night's conditions - not to say the next month's. The National Bureau of Standards in Boulder, USA, kindly transmits the information needed every 18 minutes past the hour on shortwave 2500, 5000, 10000 and 15000 kHz.

Here another problem arises; to hear WWV, the sta- tion the NBS operates. Especially in central Buro- pe this may prove difficult. Then you wont get far. Now there is the possibility to phone an answering machine at the NBS in Boulder, USA, and get the information needed. Within seconds the information is reeled off - so even if it cost a lot to phone long distance to the States it will not be that costly. All depending on how must you value your night's sleep, of course.

If youtea super-active DXer you will soon notice that you cannot live without getting these values every day. Then you know what to expect all the time on the bands. Should you on the other hand be partly active, as most of us are due to activities such as work and

family, you still need these values. In fact, you* need is even greater than it is for the active DX- er. Because those rare moments you can set aside to DXing ought to be as succeaful as possible. Even the "once-in-a-month" -DXer has a need for the solar information. The difference between the super active DXer and the occasional DXer is that the su- per active DXer needs the solar information fast and every day, while the occasional DXer may get bl with solar information on a weekly,or even monthly, basis.

BUT, and this goes for all, when it is time to gc DXing THBN you need the most up-to-date values you can get.

This is why we are about to learn you the technique of making you own, simple propagation forecast. We are not going to dig into the technical matter, we will keep to the practical side of things. In "Shortwave Propagation Handbook" George Jacobs and Theodore Cohen states that those who keeps sta- tistics day by day on the solar values will be able to make own, and pretty accurate, forecasts one month ahead. You wont succeed all the time, they add.but you can reach a 80 to 90 percent accuracy.

Then it doesn't matter if you are the great Super DX Catcher or the Everyday Plain DXer - from now on you wont get by without:

0 A index. El K index. 0 Solar flux.

In order not to get into technical details YOU don't need it will be sufficient to note that the globe is surrounded by an ionosphere.This is needed if we are to transmit anything at all on shortwave and great distances.The radio signals are reflected by the ionosphere back to the earth, instead of taking off into empty space.

The ionosphere behave differently on different hours of the day and different times of the year. All this is "regulated" by the sun and by electri- cal outbursts on the sun. The sun spots now becomes interesting, as it is supposed that major changes occurs within or near great sun spots. These changes occurs very suddenly and are violent explosions which hurls great amounts of materia from the sun's surface. Among this are ultra-violet energy, x-rays and, which is of importance to us, a kind of radio noise.

As these solar eruptions, solar flares, is connect- ed with great sun spots they are most common when the solar activity is high and less common when the solar acitivty is low, as at present, when there may be no sun spots for long periods.

When a sun spot appears on the sun's surface one can often count on a so-called geomagnetic storm some 18 to 36 hours later. The ionosphere is then bombarded with an enormous amount of charged par- ticles, which means that the different layers of

the ionosphere (see picture) will loosen up. The F layer almost disappears, or is parted into several layers. The disappearance of the F layer means that radio signals on high frequency bands will disappear. the shortwave will "die out". The effect from a scattered F layer is great differen- ces of the signal strength (flutter fading) and the appearance of "ethos". A major magnetic storm may even affect the lower B layer. All radio communication could then be impossible for some time.

After this about the sun’s influence on radio transmission, in utmost brevity, we now turn to what is of more interest: how to predict these *un spots and solar flares and what effects they may have on radio conditions.

First of all we notice that the effect the sun will have on radio conditions is different if it is on shortwave or on mediumwave.

Among mediumwave DXers it is for many year* a well known fact that the sun should be in a quiet face for some time if there is to be any conditions of any use - at least one week.

Interesting for shortwave buffs is the fact that the sun very well may be in an active face. Experience has shown that the tropical bands revives during solar storms - in contrast to what one might expect. One condition, however, is that the solar storm is not too fierce. (The question is if there is a lower limit as well, that the storm should be kind of "medium", further studies will show).

In other words: If a solar storm of "medium" size is under pro- gress, then we should be able to hear stations from Indonesia, Central Africa och Peru/Bolivia, that is countries around the Equator (see map).

In "Shortwave Propagation Handbook" Jacobs/Cohen states that, ceteris paribus, the higher the geomagnetic acitivity ionosphere has become byti;ie 6::; %r?~~er % quality of shortwave reception. They add that evidence indicates that geomagne- tic activity up to a moderate level at times actually can improve conditions on medium and low latitud paths, especially near the Equator.

And it fits - in any case when one takes a close look on Peru/Bolivia, my area of interest. A view in my log-book of 1985, and another in my book with solar curves, gives us this picture:

Cl February 28: Solar storm, A index 55 Stations like Tarma, Santa Ana, San Martin, Tropical and La Vex de1 Upano received with good strength.

q April 22: Solar storm, A index 80. Stations like La Vos de1 Tropico, Sicuani and Cristal with good strength.

0 April 29: Solar storm, A index 40. Stations such as Ancash, Juan XXIII, La Vex de1 Rio Tarqui, Tarma and Jesls de1 Gran Poder logged with good strength.

0 August 31: Solar storm, A index 32. Stations such as Vision and Bco with good strength.

And I could go on. Obviously the solar values is a great importance not only during the winter months for the medium wave DXer but also during the summer months for the shortwave DXer.

If we take a similar close look on mediumwave con- ditions we will learn that the circumstances is quite the opposite:

Acre we get a pattern of one month. Then the sl- tuation repeats itself. The explanation is simple: The 8”” rotates one turn around its axis in 27’/2 days. Thus, with pretty good *CCUl-*Cy the eame situation on the sun (sun spots and conditions) will return within 27-28 days. Now we can start making radio condition forecasts one month, or even two if you are lucky, ahead - if you ere taking notes on two values:

0 A index. 0 Solar flux.

Solar flux is e figure that states the amount of radio noise poured over the earth by the sun. We may simple sey that the solar flux is a measure of the activity on the sun. At the moment the activity on the sun is low. end generally we ere having low solar flux’, which means that radio conditions on higher frequencies are bad. On the other hand they ere better on the lower frequencies. In other words, we et-8 having some good DX years on medium wave.

A index is a figure which tells us what effect the solar flares ere having on the magnetic field of the earth. The higher the A index, the greater the amount of solar particles affecting the earth’s magnetic field. This means weaker radio signals and more fading.

1n general we get this picture: A index below 10: quiet ionosphere, a good

chance of good MW conditions A index above 30: disturbed ionosphere, a good

chance of good conditions on the tropical bands.

Now this perfect monthly fluctuation suddenly faces ma jot- changes - the sun may get a sudden outburst, a new sun sport has turned up.As the A index is the value of the solar activity the day before we need e value more up-to-date, even if it is less eccure- te. This is:

0 K index.

The K index is. es the A index, e value of the amount of charged particels which affects the geomagnetic field of the earth. The National Bureau of Standars in Boulder, USA, updates their K index once every third hour, at 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 03, 06 and 09 hours UTC. Thus it gives en actual idea of the atmospheric situation at sny given moment.

After all this let ue return to the balderwash we started with:

The solar flux is more or less informes us that we ere in the middle of a period of very low solar ac- tivity, a period lasting some yeers.

The A index of 10 is for the day befor, i e Septem- ber 12. It doesn’t tell us much, unless we have the values for several days earlier. This we heve.(For those of you with a working know- ledge in Swedish you may get the values for a pkriod of approxiemately one week from the Swedish

DX Federations answering machine - (int code) + 46 for Sweden and then 8 508 606):

September 7: 9 September 8: 10 September 9: 12 September 10: 13 September 11: 13

end September 12: 10

The geomagnetic field is fairly quiet, even though values below 10 is to prefer - which the tells us that we may expect some good MW conditions. In our cese the A index has been stable just above 10 in several days, which ought to open up the medium “eve band. Now, when the latest K index is 0. there isn’t much to hesitate about: Sacrifice your night’s sleep! It’s DX time on medium wave!

Retropectively I em able to tell you that it really was some good MW conditions - with several North American medium weve station logged here in Helsing- borg. Not to mention what they heard up north...

Looking a little closer on the WWV information you will find one more reason to go DX this specific night, if you are e MW DXer that is. The forecast tells about a solar storm: “The geomagnetic field will be unsettled to active” And then it’s “goodbye medium wave” for some time.

Exactly - the following day the WWV informed us: “Solar-terrestial conditions for 14 September was solar flux 70 and estimated A index 23 /.../ the solar activity will continue very low, the geomag- netic field will be active.

The medium weve buffs ten peacefully take e good night’s sleep. Or why not go through last night’s catches on your tapes? Until the mix of these three values once again is the right one:

0 A index. 17 K index. 0 Solar flux.

Then it’s time for some more gold digging. If on shortwave or on redium.wave - that depends on the mixture!

WoddRdioTVHandbook Now in its 40th edition! Congratulations to Jens Frost and Andy Sennitt on

their new masterpiece - the WRTH 1986 which appeared early January here in Copenhagen - about a month ear- lier than usual. It is now on sale through the DSWCI and this early appearance is highly appreciated by all readers.

Its 608 pages have in principle the same content as the previous editions, but its new lay-out is nice and the multi-colours make it much easier to read.

All stations and frequency lists have been com- pletely updated as of October 1985 and it is really a comprehensive Handbook which all DX-ers must have in their shack! Very few details are missing, such as the exact schedules of R MOSCOW which did not supply these to the WRTH. After an intense study of the WRTH86 I was only able to find very few errors (such as 4783 and 4835 kHz are missing under Mali) and this proves the first class work the editors have put into this valuable handbook !

In a letter Andreas Sohmid tells that he’s an enthusiastic pen- nant collector. He has about 300 stations pennants from all over the world. The fully revised new edition now includes additionally the VLF and LF frequency band from 0 to 150 kHz which is covered by most general coverage receivers, as well as a new chapter listing the transmission schedules of all meteorological FAX stations with full details. The 1985 revision of the 1982 Radio Regulations, as well as the new CC ITT gentex and telex service codes in force since 01 October 1985, are also listed.

This unique manual covers the complete shortwave range from 3 to 30 MHz, plus the adjacent frequency bands from 0 to 150 kHz and from 1.6 to 3 MHz, and includes details on all types of utility stations including FAX and RTTY stations.
