VSCC Welsh Rally 9th October 2011This years VSCC Welsh Rally was organised by a new team, and itshowed. The route instructions for the experts were somewhat difficult, and with a couple of errors thrown in it is no wonder that not one crewvisited all the controls. Dood Pearce was navigating for his usual driver Mark Garfitt in his1937 FNBMW 319. There were 56 entries ranging from the 747ccAustin 7 of Matthew Bell, who won overall, to a brace of Vauxhall 30/98s.The oldest car was a 1922 Humber. The 75 mile route started from Presteigne and finished at CwmWitton. Mark and Dood started at number 7 and managed to miss the firstcontrol. The instruction was to pass 19 footpaths, but unfortunately theorganisers had missed out three. Not a good start. The route itself was excellent with a lot of classic Shropshire lanessuch as Skeltons Bank and Spoad Hill. After the initial problem anotherquestion mark came when the instructions, given as tulips, were to pass6 roads on the right. This caused a lot of confusion as two of them wereactually left turns. Towards the end Dood decided they must have missed a control andthey retraced their steps and added in another loop without success toarrive back at the same place. If only they had continued another 300 ydsthey would have found the control just around the next corner! This costthem 24 mins and 2nd overall. The provisional results showed Mark and Dood 4th in class, whichconsidering the problems was not too bad. It is ironic that the club had a meeting the day before the rally anddecided to make rally instructions easier!

Alastair Moffatt has won the Ken Warton Autotest. This is the most famousautotest in the world, and the one that everyone wants to win. In order totake victory he had to beat several of the top Irish competitors as well as theBritish entries. Congratulations Alastair.

The MCC Edinburgh Trial

The Edinburgh Trial is a gruelling event consisting of 18 hills, some very rough, somein the dark and some timed. Bill Moffatt (who’s field we use for one of our autotests) and his two sonsAlastair and John were all entered. Bill was using his ex-Stuart Harrold “Troll” ,Alastair was driving Bill’s Scimitar, and John was in a Nova. The event started at the unearthly hour of 1-30 am with the Moffatts off at justbefore 3-30 am. Bill had a good run cleaning all the hills and all the stop/re-starts.John failed on just one hill, but Alastair had problems with the car which didn’t dotheir team entry any favours. There were 181 entries of which 80 were motorcycles, for this amazingly popularevent, and Bill was hopeful that his performance would be good enough to gain agold medal, but at the time of writing the final results were not out.

This year’s Manx Rally on the Isle of Man was moved from July to the end of Octoberafter discussion with the Manx Authorities. The Manx is one of the best rallies youcould ever hope to do, but moving it to the final event in the National HistoricChampionship was a recipe for disaster. As predicted insufficient entries wereforthcoming for this very expensive event and it has been cancelled. Onlycompetitors needing points were interested. Lets hope they move it back to earlier in the year or it may never run again.

Alastair Moffatt has failed in his attempt to win the British Autotest Championshipfor the 4th time in succession, however he has won the BTRDA title (again!). Welldone Alastair.

The Historic Racing Drivers Club will present a package of races in 2012 tocelebrate 50-years of the MGB as a competition car. After an approach by Barry Sidery-Smith - the acknowledged 'Godfather' ofMGB racing in the UK - the HRDC will host a collective of 30-minute,single-driver races for FIA-Appendix K-type historic MGB cars, with aninvitation class for historically interesting MGB-derived race cars, such as theWSM MGB and the Jacques Coune-built MGB Berlinette.HRDC founder and race director, Julius Thurgood, was upbeat about this newproject: "I was thrilled to be asked to help stage these events by Barry.'Sideways' got me into racing in the first place and made sure that I bought theright car to start with - the ex-Neville Marriner Prodsport MGB, which I ransuccessfully in the first Willhire 24-Hours some 30-odd years ago. Like somany would-be competitors that Barry has helped and mentored over theyears, Barry took me under his wing and introduced me to circuits such asSpa, Nurburgring, Zandvoort and Chimay.

"From a personal point of view - like so many other competitors racing today- I owe Barry a great debt of gratitude for that great start in motorsport.Helping Barry to properly celebrate 50 years of the MGB in racing is afabulous way to say 'Thank You' to a man whose generosity of spirit hashelped so many enjoy this great sport".The inaugural race for the HRDC "MGB50" will take place at Castle Combeon 9 April 2012, at the HRDC 'Historica' race day in association with theCastle Combe Racing Club.Barry Sidery-Smith - who started racing MGBs at an International level in1965 - will, of course, be entered in his famous ex-works Le Mans MGB'DRX255C', which will be supported by many of the ex-works and worksassociated MGB racers.Applications to race in HRDC "MGB50" can be made via the HRDC websiteat www.hrdc.eu.Competition and media enquiries to:JULIUS THURGOODEmail: [email protected]: 07850 361159Website: www.hrdc.eu

BRITISH GP TO BE THE FINALENext year's official National Motorsport Week (30 June-8 July) will feature the twomost popular events on the UK motor sport calendar: the Goodwood Festival of Speedand the Santander British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The British Grand Prix date - 6-8 July 2012 - was confirmed last month by theFederation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the governing body for world motorsport, while The Earl of March, patron of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, has justannounced that the world's largest celebration of motoring culture is provisionallyscheduled to take place in the beautiful surroundings of Goodwood Park over theweekend of 29 June-1 July.National Motorsport Week is jointly organised by the Motor Sports Association (MSA)and the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA) to celebrate the on-going success ofBritish competitors, teams and companies, as well drawing attention to less well-publicised parts of the sport, in order to generate increased participation.

"We couldn't have hoped for a better platform from which to promote UK motorsport,"says Colin Hilton, MSA Chief Executive. "Between them, the Festival of Speed andthe British Grand Prix attract more than 300,000 fans and millions more followers viatelevision and other media."

"While these two, high-profile events will help us to put the spotlight on the UK'sworld-leading achievements, it's essential that we maximise the opportunity to engagewith more people and encourage them to get involved. Whether it's as a competitor atgrass roots level, an active member of a local motor club, or a trackside volunteermotor sport has so much to offer. There are lots of opportunities in so many differentdisciplines for those inspired and excited by these major events - and that's whatNational Motorsport Week is all about."National Motorsport Week 2012 will build on the many accomplishments of this year'sinitiative. The scheme generated a massive increase in activities and events, rangingfrom open days at some of the county's top teams to a plethora of novice taster daysorganised by motor clubs throughout the country.

"National Motorsport Week is building the momentum deserved by both our world classUK motorsport industry and the sport," says Chris Aylett, MIA Chief Executive.

"Right now, the UK needs good news from business and our industry beats the world inhigh-performance engineering. We export over 65percent of all we make, underliningour vital importance to this country's revival and international standing. We sell nearly£10 billion of services and engineering each year, which underpins no fewer than40,000 jobs. The high-performance engineering and motorsport sector inspires the nextgeneration of world-class engineers, which is good news for the future of Britishindustry. UK motorsport success continues to promote the UK's image for the bestquality right around the globe."For more information: www.nationalmotorsportweek.co.uk.

MOTORSPORT TO DEFENCE ENJOYS RAPID RESPONSESUCCESS AT DSEI IN LONDON

Business was brisk for a delegation of 40 motorsport companies securing newbusiness in the defence industry, hosted last week by the Motorsport IndustryAssociation (MIA) to DSEi London, the world's largest, fully-integrated defenceand security exhibition.

"Despite news of budget cuts, the defence industry urgently needs fast responsefrom innovative motorsport engineering suppliers, as time is money," said ChrisAylett, CEO of the MIA.

"A growing opportunity exists as major defence companies seek more efficientsuppliers, and the MIA has opened the door for motorsport and high-performance companies. We need even more companies to join our Motorsportto Defence initiative now."Two standing-room only business seminars were led by the MIA: "RapidDeployment Solutions for Defence from the Motorsport Industry" and "IndustryCollaboration - Looking outside the Defence Industry for Solutions". Theinterest from defence companies was outstanding; all were curious as to howthey could gain benefit immediately and new contacts were made for futurebusiness.Four MIA members explained their successful technology transfer journey frommotorsport to defence: NAR Group, Cosworth, Lifeline Fire & Safety Systemsand Alpha Composites.Alistair Fergusson, MD of Alcon Components, a sponsor of the MIA'sMotorsport to Defence programme, said: "the MIA's initiative has really caughtthe imagination of motorsport and defence people alike. It was noticeable at thewell-attended seminars, that, since the last DSEi, there is growing awareness ofthe benefits of co-operation between these two industries. I have no doubt thatworthwhile new business will result from this strong motorsport presence atDSEi".In total, 11 MIA members were exhibiting at the event, including Lola Group,Supacat, NAR Group, Goodridge, and they attracted plenty of interest andbusiness. This number grows at each Defence Show, as more find the value indiversifying into this sector from motorsport. The next MIA Motorsport toDefence event - particularly of value to those in simulation - is the ADSTraining, Simulation, Evaluation & Test Event (TSET) at the University ofWest England, Bristol on 8/9 November 2011. AUTOTEST VICTORY

to 14/28-day planning regulationsThe Motor Sports Association (MSA) is delighted that the UK motor sportcommunity has played a significant role in dissuading government officialsfrom recommending changes to planning regulations that could havecaused significant damage to the sport. In July the Department for Communities and Local Government released anissues paper regarding the way in which change of use (of land) is handled

TO KEEP HIS CHAMPIONSHIP HOPES ALIVE.Reigning BTRDA Autotest Champion Alastair Moffatt secured victory at last

weekend's Wolverhampton & South Staffordshire Car Club autotest, ensuring heremains in the running for the 2011 title. The Gloucestershire-based driver, who issupported by Stunt Drive UK and Thor Hammers, came from 3.7 seconds behind hisIrish championship rival, Simon Echlin, to take a dominant victory by a margin ofover 12 seconds.By securing his 50th outright victory, Alastair Moffatt has claimed his place as themost successful autotester of the decade, and entered the top three of the mostsuccessful autotesters of all time, joining Trevor Smith and David Hague in thehistory books. The morning started with a close-fought battle between the two rivals, resulting inEchlin taking first blood and finishing the first round of tests with a lead of 3.7seconds. Over the remainder of the morning, Moffatt worked hard to reduce Echlin'searly margin, and - despite suffering a penalty - he eventually finished the morningtests only 0.6 seconds behind. As the afternoon session started, conditions continued to dry, which played intoMoffatt's hands. By mid-afternoon, he had taken the lead from Echlin, who was nowtrailing by 2.2 seconds. Once this trend had taken hold, the result was decided by acombination of a strong driving performance by Moffatt and an untimely penalty forEchlin. The final results were announced with Moffatt securing the win and Echlinin a strong second, only 12.5 seconds behind. The top three was completed by DavidEvans from Hereford, who was 59.8 seconds adrift of the pair.Following this result, Alastair Moffatt and Simon Echlin are joint leaders of theBTRDA Autotest Gold Star Championship; the eventual victor will be decided onthe final round, taking place at Demon Tweeks on Sunday 25 September.

A storming victory in the final event of the season was not enough for ElfynEvans and co-driver Andrew Edwards to claim the Dulux Trade MSA BritishRally Championship, but winning the International Rally Yorkshire cementedtheir second place and concludedand a very successful season forthe Welsh pairing. It was Evans’ second win of theseason, following victory on thePirelli International Rally. “We ledfrom start to finish but had a bit of ahiccup with a spin on SS5 which lostus a little bit of time but we managedto claw it back,” he said.

“Congratulations to David Bogie;he’s a worthy champion and I can’tbe too disappointed with second place in my debut season for the team.”

within the planning system. This included a review of the 14/28-day rule(Permitted Development Rights – provision within planning legislation fortemporary change of use) under which approximately 60 per cent of MSAmotor sport takes place. The MSA urged the motor sport community to respond to the consultationand ensure that the sport’s voice was heard. Following the consultation, itwas confirmed to the Land Access and Recreation Association (LARA) – ofwhich the MSA is a founding member – that officials did not consider thatthere was any basis for advising ministers to amend the 14/28-day rule inany way that affects motor sport.MSA Chief Executive Colin Hilton said: “We try not to mobilise the motorsport community too often, but it is encouraging to see the overwhelmingresponse when there is a matter of significant national importance. Itappears that almost half of the responses submitted as part of the consulta-tion were from people involved in motor sport. This is the second time in tenyears that we have had to explain to government the importance of thislegislation; not just for motor sport, but also for village fetes, carnivals andother community activities.”
