All 18 members of the Warwick Rowers have not got a stitch on as they pose in various locations — including south of Warwickshire’s National Trust properties Coughton Court and Bad- desley Clinton — completely naked with just their modesty protected. The calendar shoot leaves little to the imagination with just the odd straw hat, oar and umbrella covering up. Pictures were also taken in sunnier climes in Spain. Proceeds from sales have been used to improve the University of Warwick’s rowing facilities and equipment, but the 2017 edition will also raise money for Sport Allies — the club’s charity that combats homophobia in sport. A spokesman for the rowing team said: “Rowing is a really expensive sport, and back in 2009 our boats were dilapidated and we had no way of repairing them. “We started the calendar as a way of literally keeping the club afloat! The success of the calendar has transformed the club. “Not only can we keep our boats in order, but we can make the sport avail- able to a lot more students by reducing the costs to them. “The calendar has also enabled us to make a financial contribution beyond our sport to Sport Allies.” Warwick University women’s rowing team have also produced a nude cal- endar for 2017, which is their fifth ver- sion to be published. The force currently has62 officers trained in theuse of Taser, but that willincrease to 90 over the nextfew months.

Warwickshire Police hashad Tasers available tothem since 2004 and theyhave been either drawn, aimed or fired 296 times inthe last three years.

And Chief Constable,Martin Jelley, said astrategic review haddecided that having moreofficers trained in the useof them would ensure theforce would be betterequipped to protect peoplefrom harm.

Last month it wasannounced that all frontlineofficers would wear bodycameras.

A Taser is an elec-troshock weapon that firestwo small dart-like elec-trodes, which stay con-nected to the main unit byconductors to deliver elec-tric current to disrupt vol-untary control of musclescausing what is known asneuromuscular incapacita-tion. Someone struck by aTaser experiences extremepain and over-stimulationof sensory nerves andmotor nerves, resulting instrong involuntary musclecontractions.

Mr Jelley said: “Taser isan important tool thatenables our officers toappropriately deal with sit-uations that pose a signifi-cant risk to members of thepublic and our workforce.

“It is not something thatwe use lightly and thenumber of times it has beenused by the force remainsvery low. In fact, just themere presence of a Taser isoften enough of a deterrentto bring such situations to aquick and safe conclusion.

“Following a strategicassessment of the threatsand risks posed to our com-munities and our work-force, we have made thedecision that we need toincrease our number ofTaser-trained officers.

“The selection of theseadditional 28 officers willcommence in the new yearand they will undergo acomprehensive trainingpackage that ensures theycan respond appropriatelyto incidents that mayrequire the use of Taser.

“It is just one tool avail-able to our officers whoseek to protect our commu-nities from harm but animportant one nonethe-less.”

West Mercia Police, which is in a strategicalliance with Warwick-shire, will not increase thenumber of officers trainedto use Tasers. Two of WestMercia officers are cur-rently being investigatedby the Independent PoliceComplaints Commission(IPCC) following the deathof former Aston Villa foot-baller, Dalian Atkinson, inAugust, following the useof a Taser on him during anincident in Telford.

County council closes its Stratford officeWARWICKSHIRE County Councilhas moved staff from two of itsdepartments out of Stratford.

A team of employees from thechildren’s services and adult caredepartments moved into part of Eliz-abeth House — the headquarters ofStratford District Council — back in2012.

That was as a result of the cost-

cutting move out of six propertieselsewhere in a bid to save money.

Now, the decision has been takento vacate this space too, amid furtherbudget cuts that are looming over thecoming years.

Quitting the Stratford office willsave the county council just short of£100,000 a year.

 Warwickshire County Council

has pledged to recruit an additional60 new foster carers by 2020. Thereis currently a shortage of fostercarers, with 736 ‘looked after’ chil-dren in Warwickshire but only 327foster carers to look after them.

Cllr Les Caborn, portfolio holderfor health, said “Our foster carers canall make a real difference to ouryoung people in Warwickshire.”

Police hunt duo whotampered with cones

POLICE have released CCTVfootage of two people they wantto speak to after approximately50 cones were moved on a dualcarriageway to change it fromhaving one lane open to bothlanes open.

The puzzling incident took place onthe B4100 dual carriageway north-bound between junction 12 of theM40 and the British Motor Museumnear to Gaydon on Tuesday, 12th July.

But it has only now been reportedto police who are stepping up theirefforts to find those responsible due tothe dangerous nature of the act, asinterfering with traffic equipment is acriminal offence which can lead toprosecution.

PC Catherine Morgan, of Warwick-shire Police, said: “This was a highlydangerous act which endangered notonly the two individuals involved butalso other innocent road users.

“The lane was closed for an exten-sive period while work was being car-ried out by highway employees.

“By removing these cones, amotorist could have unknowinglydriven into a protected area andcaused serious damage or even killedsomeone.

“Interfering with traffic equipmentis a criminal offence which can leadto prosecution.

“Whilst we appreciate that roadclosures can be frustrating, they are in

place for a reason and we would askmotorists to always respect this.”

If you recognise the individuals orhave any information call Warwick-shire Police on 101, quoting incidentnumber 257 of 15th November, or,information can be given anony-mously via Crimestoppers on 0800555111 or online at www.crimestop-pers-uk.org

SG DoorsRoller Shutter Garage Doors Specialist

At SG Doors we specialise in the fi tting of bespoke double skinned, insulated, remote control, electric roller garage doors that can be supplied to your specifi cations, including a range of different colours.

Essentially a Roller Garage Door is an insulated double skin aluminium curtain protecting your garage. With the double side brush in the guide runners and a curtain that rolls right to the fl oor, it is good for excluding draughts as well as effi cient and convenient at both restricting and allowing access to the garage.

FOAM FILLED INSULATED ALUMINIUM SLATS

SAFER THAN CONVENTIONAL Garage DOORSThe space saving allows you to park close to the garage door with no risk and also saves space inside the garage, giving you access to roof joists that would have otherwise been occupied by the garage doors. It also removes the danger of outward swinging garage doors striking unseen persons or objects outside.

The design of Roller Garage Doors means they are effi cient space savers; rather than swinging the door to the side or outwards in front of the garage, the garage door roller system means the doors roll directly up into a top roll system mounted above the door frame.

Stratford-upon-Avon is one of the most sought-after holiday andvisitor destinations in the UK, and the Stratford-upon-AvonVisitor Guide is the official guide to where to stay, what to seeand do, and where to eat, in and around the historic town.

The guide has been produced by the Stratford-upon-Avon Heraldin conjunction with Stratforward BID and Shakespeare’s England, and is available from the Herald’s office on Rother Street,Stratford, the Visitor Information Centre on Bridgefoot, andmany other outlets across south Warwickshire — and beyond!

Stratford-upon-Avon is one of the most sought-after holiday and visitor destinations in the UK,not only because it is set in beautifulWarwickshire countryside on the banks of theriver that gives it its name, but because thetown is steeped in culture and history.

Being the birthplace of the poet and playwrightWilliam Shakespeare, understandably it offers aunique insight into ‘olde’ England and visitors canexperience first hand the atmosphere and history ofthe buildings where he was brought up, his familylived and even Holy Trinity Church where he wasbaptised and buried. Most of the ShakespeareBirthplace Trust properties are in the hub of thetown amidst a fine array of quaint shops as well asbigger brand stores, offering easy access, with justtwo sited on the outskirts of the town which can bereached by an open top tour bus.

Theatre lovers are drawn to Stratford-upon-Avonfor its world-famous Royal Shakespeare Companywhich performs a full season of Shakespeare in itsRoyal Shakespeare and Swan Theatres, as well asnewer work and plays from the Bard’scontemporaries.

The theatre is also the home of many popularattractions including its restored 1930s aspects, exhibitions, rooftop and riverside restaurants, backstage tours and a 36-metre high tower andviewing platform from which to appreciate thetown’s historic landmarks.

There are a multitude of venues across the townoffering a wide collection of first-class amateurtheatrical productions, ranging from pantomimeand drama to musicals and opera and a localcinema.

A second new cinema is also arriving this year.Everyman Cinema will form part of the new BellCourt entertainment and retail hub.

Culture doesn’t stop there, the Stratford ArtsHouseon Rother Street plays host to a wide variety ofevents including chamber and symphonyorchestras, big bands, evenings with well-knowncelebrities, art exhibitions and many othercommunity and charity events. The venue alsoprovides the home of nationally renownedOrchestra of the Swan, which runs a season ofthemed concerts featuring some of the bestmusical soloists around.

As well as offering a kaleidoscope of entertainmentthere is some interesting architecture dottedaround the town, including the historic Town Halland the beautiful Guild Chapel, plus an abundanceof visitor attractions including the StratfordButterfly Farm.

On top of this there is a vast array of fine eatingplaces, parks and gardens.

Cheap car ownersset for road tax riseA BOOM in car sales is on the cards forearly 2017 if buyers are to beat new cartax rules that will hike the cost of owningsome of Britain’s most popular cars fromApril.

In some cases drivers will face higherownership costs of up to £900 or moreover three years. It’s all because ofchanges which will see some models inbestselling ranges like the Ford Fiesta,Vauxhall Astra and Nissan Qashqai losetheir current exemption from road tax.

Dozens of models that are currentlyexempt will start to attract £400 in taxcharges over three years, when a newTreasury scheme comes into place on 1stApril, affecting any new car registeredafter that date.

But in the most extreme cases somebuyers who choose a car which is cur-rently tax exempt will be charged almost£1,000 over three years.

The current tax scheme is based oncarbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Any car

emitting an average of less than 99g ofCO2 for every kilometre that it drives iscurrently exempt from car tax.

The new rules slash that exemptionwhich, after 1st April, will only apply tovehicles with no CO2 emissions at all —mainly electric cars.

Drivers of any other car will pay £140in tax each year, apart from the first yearthat it’s on the road, when tax will still becalculated on CO2 emissions.

It gets worse for anyone buying a carwith an official price of more than£40,000, they will face an annual ‘wealthtax’ for cars between the ages of one andsix years, taking their bill to £450 a year.

The changes are expected to earn theTreasury more than a billion pounds ayear more from 2020.

It finally stepped in when one in fivenew cars sold in 2015 was efficientenough to be tax exempt, according to theSociety of Motor Manufacturers andTraders.

Porsche 911 is car thieves’‘most wanted’THE list of five cars most at risk ofbeing stolen in 2016 is topped bysome distance by the Porsche 911Carrera 4S, with one in six registra-tions checked returning a stolenwarning.

Second most at risk was the Mercedes-Benz CLC 220 Cdi Sport Auto, with one in11 checked returning a stolen warning, fol-lowed by the Range Rover EvoqueDynamics D4A, Honda Jazz SE CVT andFord Fiesta Zetec.

Roger Powell, who is the head ofwww.MyCarCheck.com, which carried outthe research, said: “It should come as nosurprise that the cars most at risk of beingstolen in 2016 are prestige models: aPorsche 911 sports car, Mercedes-benzClc220 coupe and Land Rover EvoqueSUV.

“They are desirable to used car buyersand targeted by car thieves due to the profitpotential.

“The fact that the UK’s best-selling car,the Fiesta, is fifth on our list shows thatany used car for sale can potentially bestolen.

“While the risk of buying one is rela-tively low, you must weigh that against theembarrassment of being pulled by thepolice and finding yourself massively outof pocket when it is seized and returned toits rightful owner.

“That’s why all motor traders use

vehicle provenance checks and we urge allconsumers to do the same.

“The latest British Crime Surveyshowed that vehicle theft is on the rise forthe first time in 20 years. The period April2015 to March 2016 saw an eight per centrise, with 80,047 vehicles recorded asstolen.

“You also have to bear in mind that carsstolen during house burglaries or by assetfraud aren’t included, so the problem isserious and getting worse.”

Premium carsprove popularfor web surfersAUTO Trader has announced themost searched-for cars of the year, revealing the ten make and modelsmost popular amongst around60million monthly visitors to itswebsite in 2016, which currentlyhas almost half a million cars listedfor sale.

The BMW 3 series topped the list for asixth consecutive year, beating two of itsBMW stablemates in both the 1 Series and5 Series. Premium vehicles accounted for75 per cent of the top ten list.

Jon Quirk, Auto Trader’s editor-in-chief, said: “The BMW 3 series continuesits dominance as the most searched, whilethe overall popularity for premium vehi-cles continues.

“This is due, in part, to an expansivenew car portfolio and the availability oflow-rate finance.

“Small family cars have been big newsin 2016 too, as they can provide superblevels of in-car technology, safety andrefinement in more compact, more effi-cient and cost effective packages.”

The rise in UK car buyers on thelookout for more premium models led to asignificant rise in searches for the 3 Seriesrival, the Mercedes-Benz C Class, whichrose two places in the search list to takethird spot from the Ford Focus.

The Volkswagen Golf also continues tobe highly desirable for UK car buyers in

2016, as it becomes the second mostsearched for car on Auto Trader for theeighth year running.

Making a prediction for 2017, Mr Quirkadded: “2017 is going to be the year of thesmall car. The small car league table willsee a host of new competition — the FordFiesta, Volkswagen Polo, Citroen C3 andSeat Ibiza will all have brand new modelsin 2017, not to mention the totally rein-vented Nissan Micra.

“We’re also expecting to see an increasein the number of searches for electric vehi-cles, with refreshed models like theRenault Zoe promising better range andthe release of the Tesla Model 3 — theFord Focus-sized electric car with a 200+mile range costing £30,000 – whichshould bring mass appeal for UK carbuyers.”
