the lee Kuan yeW aWard FOr all-rOund exCellenCeThe Lee Kuan Yew All-Round Excellence Award is a national-level award for achievement in education that was presented for the first time in 2005. It is a pinnacle award, which recognises well-rounded students who have excelled in both academic and non-academic spheres, and who exemplify positive character development, strong leadership qualities and commitment to service to the community. The award is presented at the end of Secondary education.

Muhammad Zul Fadzli Bin Mohd Zuraimi was awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Award for All-Round Excellence in 2015 in recognition of his exemplary leadership qualities and academic achievement. Fadzli strongly exhibited the school values of passion and resilience in all his endeavours, be it academic pursuits or co-curricular activities. A driven and focused individual who gives his best in all that he does, Fadzli has an unflagging determination that works to overcome setbacks in his life. He is receptive in the advices sought and accept feedback from his teachers and peers. His willingness to continuously improve is a testament to his maturity.

As the Unit Sergeant Major in the National Cadet Corps, he does not hesitate to go beyond his call of duties. Besides sharing his knowledge and skills, he set aside time to mentor his cadets. He leveraged the strengths of his member to bring the unit to greater height. On top of his CCA duties, he also served the school in the CCA (Uniformed Group) Council selflessly.

His commitment to serve the community was notable from his involvement as the overall project leader in the class Values-in-Action project to organise a learning journey to Singapore for a group of Cambodian Youth from Siem Reap in 2013. He empowered each of his team members with the authority and resources to accomplish their tasks. Fadzli displayed ingenuity in anticipating and managing unexpected situations throughout the entire project. Under his wing, the class completed the project successfully.

Fadzli effectively handled with various demands from the multiple responsibilities held in school. The qualities and values Fadzli possesses exemplify the kind of Thoughtful Leader Swiss Cottage wants to nurture.

Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.

In 2012, The school shifted its vision from “Vibrant Learning Community” to “Thoughtful Leaders”. From 2013, the school was busy outlining the Thoughtful Leadership journey and developed the Thoughtful Leadership Programme (TLP) to propel the school’s vision of Thoughtful Leaders. By 2014, the approach and deployment for the school’s TLP received clarity and it became one of the two distinctive school programmes – the Learning for Life curriculum. To date, our TLP has paved the way for our youth’s strong and focused connection with the community. In 2014, we were identified as one of the six Community Youth Leadership schools

Today, we are four years into an inspiring vision of “Thoughtful Leaders” - giving every student a chance to lead and bring about meaningful and sustainable change to their environment and community at large. The Thoughtful Leadership sub-programmes are driven by the Centre for Thoughtful Leadership (CTL), namely Glocal Perspectives Programme (GPP), Values-in Action Programme (VIAP) and Student Leadership Programme (StLP). The ‘taught’ curriculum across the three sub-programmes culminate in action - the VIA efforts of the students.

By 2015 we would have successfully streamlined our sub-programmes. We have a fully functioning TLP with successfully streamlined programmes that with collaboration across programmes, e.g. TLP and Applied Sciences, we can give students a single heightened experience that is authentic and impactful. In 2015, this collaboration led to the birth of a curriculum innovation called Project Child’s Play, which received an Outstanding Contribution Award (Team) for the impact it had on the integrated learning of the entire Sec 2 cohort of students.

In 2015, the Integrated Learning Programme, was another key highlight that brought together a heightened experience of Thoughtful Leadership experiences in the school – across all levels. A range of events was sequenced into a 2-3 day schedule on 12 to 13 March 2015 to drive home important leadership learning outcomes at every level.

The recurring event across all the levels was the preparation towards or deployment of the cohort Values-In-Action (VIA) programmes amidst other activities.

The Thoughtful Leadership Student Role Profile Matrix outlines the consistent growth required of students across the Nine Dimensions of Leadership Skills and Attribute, which are the skills and attributes of Thinking Caring and Leading expected of Thoughtful Leaders as follows:

• THINK- (i) Ethical, (ii) Forward/Positive and (iii) Glocal Thinking;

• CARE for (i) Self/Family, (ii) School/Community and (iii) Nation/World; as well as

• LEADing in a (i) Principled & Efficacious way, (ii) with Managerial competencies and (iii) with Transformational effect.

These dimensions in the Matrix help dipstick the school’s progress towards its desired state. The four levels in the Matrix represent levels of development the students will go through in Swiss – from awareness, beginnings of action (guided), action and beginnings of advocacy and advocacy.

In 2015, the Matrix was piloted with Sec 2 Express students before it was introduced to Sec 1 cohort as a whole. The Sec 1 students also completed a self-asessment using the Matrix. The results have been encouraging.

By 2015, all Secondary 1 and 2 classes were introduced to the Glocal Perspectives Programme (GPP) which is an anchor Thinking Programme developed under the wing of Thoughtful Leadership Programmes (TLP).

The GPP was first implemented in 2014 to Secondary 1 Express students as a pilot programme. Selected lessons were trialed among students from the Secondary 1 Normal Academic and Normal Technical streams.

The entire 2015 batch of Sec 1 students enjoyed the GPP programme. This cohort will continue to enjoy the Sec 2 programme in 2016.

23SWISS COTTAGE SECONDARY SCHOOL Yearbook 2015

student leadershiP PrOgraMMesThe Swiss Student Leadership Program has a 2-tier structure comprising cohort programme as well as selected programmes. For the cohort programme, the school developed a student leadership curriculum based on our PEMT framework (Principled, Efficacious leaders with Managerial competencies and a Transformational mindset) which focuses on explicit leadership competencies at the different cohort levels to allow students to develop into a Thoughtful Leader. The student leadership curriculum has a spiral progression across the 4 years.

In Secondary 1, students will focus on self-leadership and self-management competencies to help them manage with the increased workload from primary school and settle down in secondary school.

In Secondary 2, peer leadership competencies such as communication and facilitation skills are taught. Students are given direct platforms for application though Integrated Project Work module where they will need to strategically plan activities for the pre-school students using their knowledge from various disciplines such as Applied Sciences.

In Secondary 3, students hold more leadership responsibilities as they become leaders and seniors in their CCAs and other student body groups. As such, they are equipped with advanced peer leadership competencies such as action management and project management skills. These skills are also used in the planning and execution of their elderly walk Values-In-Action project in March. After going through 3 years of leadership competencies, the Secondary 4 students will then be given greater space and platform to mentor their juniors before they step down.

Our Tier 2 leadership training is customised for our select student leaders group which comprises the Student Council, Sports Leaders and CCA Council. Currently, we have established a Tier 2 curriculum based on our framework which includes leadership modules, mentoring, platforms for student leaders and also leadership stories based on our Habitudes material. In addition, external platforms have also been given to student leaders such as attendees for National Leaders Conference, Service Learning Symposium, National Youth Leaders Conference, Outward Bound Singapore, sharing at MOE MorningChers! Festival and various student leadership conferences.

As part of our vision to mould students to be Thoughtful Leaders, the Student Council continued their journey of the Diff-ability Project this year in exploring ways to reach out to other people in the community with disabilities. A project that was initially targeted at understanding People with Disabilities (PWDs) by visiting Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped and interacting with the PWDs, has been transformed into an experiential programme for the school. This year, the Student Council had the opportunity to interact and engage with people from Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore. Through the interaction, students are able to understand and experience first-hand the challenges that are faced by people with mental disabilities. Apart from advocating for PWDs and raising the awareness of their peers to change their mindsets, address concerns and advocate for the PWDs, the Student Council also managed to do 2 outreach programs to 2 primary school students this year.

The increasing need to build an inclusive society has also propelled the Student Council to embark on another simulation project, the ‘Elderly Experience’ to help Swiss students explore more real life issues that are happening around them. This project aims to help students to be able to have a better understanding of the concerns and problems the elderly face in their daily lives. We hope that such programs will sensitize our students and spur them to make a positive change in the community.

Values-in-aCtiOn PrOgraMMes

The key objectives of the Swiss Values-In-Action Programme (VIAP) are to:

• Deliver the desired student outcomes;• Generate positive impact on the beneficiaries; and• Forge sustainable and mutually-benefitting partnerships between Swiss Cottage Secondary School

and our community partners, both local and international.

The Swiss VIAP is one of the key levers to develop student character, leadership and spirit for volunteering. With a two-tiered whole-school approach to deliver the programme, all Swiss students experience VIA through diversified cohort programmes and student-directed VIA activities.

“Awareness-Action-Advocacy” (3A) provides the framing for our VIA curriculum and programme to accentuate the importance of youth volunteerism through student-directed VIA. Our students, as thoughtful leaders, will step forward to advocate for the good cause they believe in and lead others to achieve sustainable change for the community.

On 26 July 2015, 56 of our Chinese and Malay dancers took part in the festival for the youth at the Singapore Sports Hub, Youth Celebrate! The large-scale performance consists of about 3500 student performers and athletes from MOE schools, Institutes of Higher Learning and Special Education schools.

The Youth Celebrate! aims to foster a deeper sense of national pride as we celebrate the achievements, spirit and talent of Singapore youths over 50 years of nationhood. Through this mass participation and bonding among the other performing participants, our dancers achieve a sense of connectedness and are able to strengthen their national identity. This festival allows our students to uphold the pioneering spirit and enduring values such as resilience, perseverance and teamwork.

With Hari Raya Puasa around the corner, Racial Harmony Day was celebrated together with the festive period through a two weeks long programme. To increase the exposure of students to the Malay culture, the Citizenship Representatives in each class were taught the Dikir Barat movements, to co-lead the school with the Malay dancers during the celebrations. Not forgetting the other races, students were also given the opportunity to learn about the cultural practices of the other races during their CCE lessons. And of course, no Racial Harmony Day celebrations will be complete without the annual practice of wearing traditional costumes as well as the sharing of delicacies like satay and dragon beard candy during curriculum time.

Breaking away from the usual practice of commemorating International Friendship Day that focuses on the social and cultural aspects of various countries, students were given opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of other aspects like the economic and political situation of the various Southeast Asian countries. Taking a student directed approach towards the learning; they were tasked to research on a given country and create a simple e-book containing quick and fun facts about the assigned country.

Monthly SG 50 commemorations were also conducted as a lead up to our nation’s 50th birthday. Events were held monthly to commemorate various aspects of Singapore’s history and culture. Special presentations and hands-on activities were conducted in April, May and July to showcase the evolution of Singapore’s cuisine, places of interest and even the various forms of activities that Singapore children took part in through the years.

tOtal deFenCe day

On the 1st of July 2015, the school held a commemorative event on the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Day and NCC Day. The SAF Day is a day with significant meaning for the National Servicemen (NSmen) as well as the rest of the nation. On this special day, thousands of servicemen, both past and present, pay tribute to national service; while schools express thanks to the many NSmen for their contributions to ensure the peace and security of Singapore. A strong SAF keeps Singapore safe and secure. We can raise our families, pursue our careers and live relatively worry-free lives. Our stable environment attracts foreign investors who know that their investments are safe in Singapore. These investments contribute to our nation's economy and create jobs for our people. A strong SAF also means that we will not be easily threatened as a nation and can pursue our national interests as a free people.

The Citizenship Education Committee celebrated our nation’s 50th birthday through a series of events that were conducted throughout the year. We started the year by inviting the National Heritage Board to bring in their mobile exhibition that showcased Singapore’s medical history. Students were treated to an interesting display of Singapore’s medical history that included pictures and medical artefacts that were used in the past. This was soon followed by the commemoration of Total Defence which saw the school appreciating the Singapore Armed Forces in defending our country. The commemoration of Total Defence saw the successful run of a Forum Theatre for the very first time. Our students were eager to determine the outcome of the drama by giving suggestions to the student actors on how they could act out a particular resolution to the various issues raised in the drama. It was through this run of Forum Theatre that our students were able to reflect on the various ways in which they all can contribute to building an inclusive society that recognises the role played by all including women in defending our nation.

The Citizenship Education committee closed 2015 with a big bang with the successful execution of the biggest Citizenship Education event of the year, the SG50 National Day Celebrations. As always, the Swiss Uniform Group students worked hard to prepare for the ceremonial segment of the parade. Special mention goes out to the NCC (Air) cadets who arranged for the aero-modelling plane fly pass during the parade. The parade was enlivened further with a special dramatization of Singapore’s history by the Swiss Drama Club and the Swiss Naturalists. Students clearly enjoyed the various segments of the parade judging from their rousing cheers during the parade.

seC 3 hOrizOn PrOgraMMeCultural iMMersiOn @ Kuala luMPur, Malaysia (8 – 11 June 2015)

As part of the school’s Horizons Programme, the Secondary 3 cohort embarked on an overseas trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 8th to 11th of June 2015. The objectives of the trip were to:

• provide opportunity to immerse in the culture of a foreign country;• enrich and extend learning beyond the classroom; and• build class spirit and cohesion.

On the first day, students get an opportunity to experience the traditional rural lifestyle of Malaysia through honest interaction with the locals in Sarang Buaya, Johor, which literally translates to Crocodile’s Nest. They visited plantations of the 3 main cash crops, Josapine Pineapple, Robusta Coffee Beans and Palm to get an up-close view on how these items are produced and processed.

On the second day, students embarked on a city tour of Kuala Lumpur. Places visited include Putrajaya, King’s Palace and Merdeka Square. Accompanied by experienced educational guides, they learnt about the history and culture of Malaysia. Students get to compare between the modern fast-paced city life style in KL and relaxing lifestyle of the plantations.

On the the third day, students went to Sungai Sireh in Selangor to experience the Kampung lifestyle. The village is located in the middle of Malaysia’s important rice growing region in Tanjong Karang, Selangor. Students get to see how rice is grown and how paddy is processed before it becomes the rice we are so familiar with. Through other activities like fishing, playing traditional games, doing art and craft work and cooking, students were thoroughly exposed to the lives and culture of the locals.

The trip has allowed students to see and experience a different and contrasting lifestyles giving them a better understanding of the Malay culture.

Students Reflections

On Sarang Buaya:“It is very new to me. I was exposed to the kampong lifestyle where the pace is much slower compared to Singapore and the people there can do their things at their own pace and time. Through the farm cultivator, we learn about pride and organisation in managing their pineapple plantation.”

- Francene Mooi, 3E5

“There are many differences that I could see between Singapore and Malaysia. The experience and knowledge that we have gained during the tour may be something that we can use in our daily life in Singapore.”
