Depending on what planet
or world you explore, will
determine whether bright
colors, subdued, or just
plain dark is the latest style
of that particular culture.
USS Silver Fox Page 4
On the world Sci 50, a “retro” look is now
popular. Sociologies can’t account for the
trend, but there doesn’t seem to be any
argument from the male part of the
populous.
USS Silver Fox Page 5
And from the planet
Organa, the local beach
fashion favors imitation
of the royal princess.
USS Silver Fox Page 6
And on the moon of
Anderson’s planet,
purple hair and silver
cloths seem to be the
fashion (though how
they get a chance to
swim on a planetary
moon is beyond me).
USS Silver Fox Page 7
No—we don‘t have any idea on what these are either.

And now, something for the Ladies
This outfit is just right for the hot, steamy jungle planet. In which case, the people find a nice dip in
the giant water falls a great way to finish up a hard day’s work.
USS Silver Fox Page 9
Meanwhile, the planet
Mars is lovely this time of
year. Alien monsters to
fight, mostly naked
princesses to rescue, and
then the River of No
Return to wash off the
Martian dust.
Thor and the Green Lantern would agree.

And, to finish up, what better than a picture of our own Captain Kirk, who plays a game of
“Wack a Brain” before heading out to the beach.
Thanks folks! Be sure to join us next year for
more thrills and adventure with the fashion of
swimsuits!

www.startreknewvoyages.com – that independent film maker that creates Star Trek’s New
Voyages has a new episode – the Child. This seventh episode came out this last April 5th
, so some
of the readers here might not have seen it yet. The story writing isn’t quite as polished as in
previous episodes in the series, but it is still amazing the amount of professional production that’s
put into the show. In which case, these productions wouldn’t be called amateur, but maybe “semi-
pro”? Check it out in any case.
Side note: One thing that was noticed is that this episode features a couple characters that
were originally supposed to appear during the proposed Star Trek’s second series on TV. As some
of the older Trek will mention, Star Trek was supposed to return to the TV screen back in the
1970s – called Star Trek: Phase 2. Paramount Pictures was gearing up towards making a “fourth”
TV network (back then the major networks were just NBC, CBS, and ABC), and a new version of
Star Trek was lead off Paramount’s prime time night slot. That project was eventually dropped
USS Silver Fox Page 11
because the idea at that time was too new and the country’s independent TV stations didn’t put
enough of their support into it. So the remainder of that Star Trek project turned into Star Trek:
the Motion Picture. The upshot of all this is that the new TV series had new characters added to
the show already large cast.
Khon was a Vulcan that joined the crew and worked in the Science section under Spock.
He was a full blooded Vulcan, as opposed to Spock’s half-Vulcan half-human heritage, and so
presented a unique chance to see the Vulcan point of view in contrast to Earth humans (he was the
first of this type of character to appear). Another character was Ilia, a Deltan. In the above New
Voyages episode we see Zhon (Khon was part of ST: The Motion Picture, so the producers here
had to change the Vulcan’s name just a little) and DeSel (taking Ilia’s place here). And with these
additions to the storylines, the New Voyages series has been retitled Star Trek: Phase 2. The
website URL stays the same though.

Battlestar Galactica Club – Colonial Ministry of Defense
[Jeff here: In exploring the fan activity in my area I have not only stuck with those fan groups or
individuals with an interest in Star Trek, but also all general and media SF/F. Case in point is the
Battlestar Galactica clubs. Below is an email from BG fan James Austin who lives in the western
New York state city of Buffalo (some 35 miles away) and the XO of Battlestar Hades chapter. I am
currently checking out the CMoD(like ours, it has about 300 members) and will present news on
the club in future issues.]
Hello Jeff,
Nice to hear from you. Just want to bring you up to speed on some things and see if you'd still like to
be part of some BSG fandom.
I am no longer with the CDF. Most of the Angel Styron crew followed my lead and left with other ex
CDF members to form a new BSG fan group called the Colonial Ministry of Defense. It is fan friendly
where all the members have a voice in what goes on with the group. There are several chapters or
battlestars assigned to one of 12 Colonial Fleets. I currently serve as Executive Officer on the
Battlestar Hades BS-77 Flagship of the Tauron Fleet. We also are the home chapter of our current
CMoD Organization President so we are Flagship of The Fleet as well.
There are chapters all over the US and Canada. We are a fun group but we are involved in serious
issues like helping charities by donating time and money. Think of us as the Colonial version of
Starfleet.
If you would like to know more about our group, go to this website:
http://www.colonialministryofdefense.org/forum/index.php . You can also find us on facebook as the
USS Silver Fox Page 12
Colonial Ministry of Defense and in yahoo groups as well.
If you like what you see, feel free to join up. You can be a Colonial Fleet Officer or enlisted person,
Colonial Marine Officer or enlisted person or a Civilian. If you join as a Colonial Officer, you can be a
Viper or Raptor pilot or serve in Engineering, Medical, OPS or Bridge Officer positions. If you choose to
be a pilot you will be asked to give a callsign for your persona. You will be assigned to a battlestar
chapter nearest you unless you request a specific chapter.
I hope you look into our group and find a chapter near you to interact with. Regardless of location, we
all pretty much talk to each other. I live in North Carolina but am XO of the Hades which is based in
New Jersey.
Thanks again for writing and I hope to hear from you again. Let's keep fandom growing strong and
fun!

Steampunk Worlds Fair (http://steampunkworldsfair.com)
On May 18th
to 20th
the steampunk convention known as the Steampunk Worlds Fair
happened in Piscataway, New Jersey. The website for the event is above, that will provide more
information than this poor article could. And since no one here had a chance to go (something
about it requiring money to attend), it is hoped that some good reader here who did attend this
event might write us a convention report and tell us how it all went.

Starship Size Comparisons (www.merzo.net)
USS Silver Fox Page 14
This website offers a size comparison for a variety of starships from the major media
science fiction universes. How does Star Trek’s USS Enterprise compare in size to Star Wars
Millennium Falcon? And how does the Millennium Falcon compare in size to a Babylon5 Vorlon
transport? These questions and more are answered by this website, with a fair amount of ship
schematics art to demonstrate the author’s point. Check it out.

Game of Thrones, Part 2
HBO cable network has started the second season of episodes based on George
R.R.Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire novels. The first season encompasses the first novel Game of
Thrones, while the second season comes from the second novel A Clash of Kings. For those of us
who haven’t had a chance to compare the novel version with the filmed TV version there are a
number of Internet websites that helps fill in the gaps between the two.

Finally
An Idea for an Original Cast Star Trek Movie – For those of you that were here late issue, I
mentioned my opinions about the proposed “Academy Days” Star Trek movie that was supposed
to be filmed in the 1980s (the same idea that became the current version of the new Star Trek).
Star Trek 4: the Way Home was also mentioned; and this time I’d like to forward my opinion of
an idea I had for Star Trek 5.
To recap, Star Trek 4 had the original crew without the USS Enterprise (the refitted
Enterprise had been crashed towards the end of ST3: In Search of Spock). So what they did have
was the Klingon “bird of prey” scout ship that they took from the bad guy Klingons. At the
beginning of ST 4 Doctor McCoy renames the scout ship the HMS Bounty (named after the
sailing ship in the novel Mutiny on the Bounty). Now right there I would have changed the
starship’s name to the Starship Phoenix -- as in the idea that the starship was originally a Klingon
war ship but it was raised from the ashes to become a starship for Good. Okay, onward --
throughout the film they used this Klingon starship for their adventures and it served them well.
And at the end of the film, the Klingon ship is crashed into San Francisco bay, the whales are
released into the ocean, and the whales help us stave off the alien threat that started at the
beginning of ST 4 . The result of all that adventuring was that the Federation and Starfleet were
grateful for Kirk and Co. saving their butts again, and as such, awarded them a brand new starship
– the USS Enterprise A. And so, Kirk and Co. become “Star Trek” again (got to have the
complete concept there with the original crew aboard the USS Enterprise, otherwise it just
wouldn’t be the same Star Trek, would it?), and can go on to new adventures. Ta Daa!!
Here’s my idea on what happened – the producers of the ST movies should’ve kept the
Klingon bird of prey as The Starship. Star Trek 4 was a nice change of pace for the movie back
USS Silver Fox Page 16
then, complete with the original cast playing around in that smaller ship. The original series (TV
and theatrical films) had the cruiser size Enterprise which contained a large compliment of
crewmembers. However, when the stories are laid out, most of the action stayed around the bridge
crew. They had all those people to make the starship work, but the action remained around those
core characters. My thought was that the storylines didn’t need all that many bodies lying around
just to make the starship seem full. And ST 4 showed that Star Trek could’ve continued on
without the larger starship; they would’ve been quite comfortable in that smaller scout ship.
Star Trek 5 could’ve started out with the Crew on the S.S. Phoenix. Did Kirk and Co.
really have to be a part of Starfleet anymore, even if all was forgiven for what happened in ST 3?
They could’ve just upheld the principles of the Federation and Starfleet and just done some jobs
for them on the side. And they could’ve gone off and had a number of adventure movies after that
without any problems. I like that idea.
Side note: In the early 1990s I was a part of a Trek club called the USS Konkordium – D.
This club was a correspondence-type club that did a good deal of role-playing as its activity. And,
even though it was an independent club (not a chapter of a national organization), it was starting to
get little spinoff groups. I really enjoyed the interaction that was happening with the club, so I
considered starting my own spinoff group….Yep, you guessed it – the Starship Phoenix (ST: the
Next Generation and the theatrical movies after that showed that Klingon starship was popular with
the audience too). My role-playing back story for the group was that a salvage company pulled out
that Klingon scout ship out of San Francisco bay, got it cleaned up and useable, and I ended up
using it for my private use. That is, my crew and I travel off into space and have a few adventures. I
like that idea too (it’s just too bad the Konkordium – D didn’t last long enough for me to start my
group there).
