MEET PROCEDURES Obtain a Programme and have your name marked off at registrations upon entering the venue. If there are any issues with your entries in the program, immediately see the Chief Recorder. MARSHALLING PROCEDURES Any swimmer who fails to report personally to the Clerk of Course at least ten (10) minutes prior to the scheduled time for the start of that session if entered in the first or second events, or at the time of the start of an event at least two (2) events prior to the event in which they are entered shall be deemed to be withdrawn. It is permissible for a swimmer's representative to report to the Clerk of Course on their behalf. Where a swimmer has difficulty in reporting to the Clerk of Course by the required time, it is recommended that their representative report to the Clerk of Course on their behalf prior to the event closing. Once reported, a swimmer is not permitted to leave the marshalling area unless approval is first obtained from the Clerk of Course. All heats (including heats of 800 metres and 1500 metre freestyle) shall be deemed to be one event for the purpose of this rule.

For Example: If entered in Event 9, the swimmer must have personally reported to the Clerk of Course before the start of the first heat of Event 7.

Coaches or parents are not permitted to be in the Marshalling Area. Refer Swimming New South Wales Ltd. Swimming Rule SW10.17. In the event of there being sufficient withdrawals from the heats of an event, which would enable the number of heats to be reduced, the Referee may at their discretion either amalgamate heats by filling vacant lanes in a heat or heats with those swimmers whose heat has been cancelled, or reseed the whole event. WITHDRAWALS Swimmers who fail to report to the Clerk of Course by the specified time shall be a withdrawal. CONDITION OF ENTRY All entrants in a New South Wales Meet shall abide by and be subject to the Swimming New South Wales General Rules, Swimming Rules, Open Water Swimming Rules, By-Laws, Policies, and published procedures in accordance with General Rule GR3.2 MEDICAL ISSUES By entering this event, competitors (or legal guardian) are declaring that they are fit to compete. In the event that an entrant experiences a medical issue whilst competing at, or during a New South Wales Meet, the entrant will be required to provide a medical clearance from a health care professional before being allowed to resume competition at that Meet. The Technical Manager will have the sole authority to adjudicate on this rule. Please refer to GR 3.3.

Page 6: SWIMMING NSW · The purpose of classification in swimming is to minimise the impact of eligible impairment types on the outcome of competition so that athletes who succeed in competition

What is classification?

Classification groups athletes according to the impact of their impairment on their ability to

compete in the sport of swimming. The purpose of classification in swimming is to minimise

the impact of eligible impairment types on the outcome of competition so that athletes who

succeed in competition are those with best anthropometry, physiology and psychology and

who have enhanced them to best effect. In Australia swimming classification is designed to

ensure a fair environment for competition at all levels from club through to Australian

Championships.

The Classes

The following information is a guide only. For full details, refer to the Swimming Australia

Classification Policy and Procedures Manual here:

http://www.swimming.org.au/Assets/Policies/Swimming-Australia-Classification-Policy.aspx

There are 16 classes in the swimming classification system which caters for a range of

disabilities. Each class has minimum eligibility requirements and swimmers must undergo

specific Athlete Evaluation or Eligibility process to obtain a classification. Swimmers receive

a class for each stroke discipline, and a prefix indicates which stroke the class applies to;

• The prefix S to the class denotes the class for Freestyle, Backstroke & Butterfly

• The prefix SB to the class denotes the class for breaststroke

• The prefix SM to the class denotes the class for Individual Medley

Exceptions to the swimming rules

Some swimmers are entitled to receive exceptions to the swimming rules and other

considerations based on their classification. The exceptions prevent classified swimmers

from being disqualified during Multi Class (MC) competition. These exceptions are

determined during the classification process and are identified by a system of codes known

as the Swimming Codes of Exceptions.
