ONE BILLION EMOJI
SwiftKey analyzed more than one billion pieces of emoji data across a wide range of categories to
learn how speakers of 16 dierent lang!ages and regions !se emoji" #he $ndings in this report came
from an analysis of aggregate SwiftKey %lo!d data o&er a fo!r month period between 'ctober 201(
and )an!ary 2015* and incl!des both Android and i'S de&ices"
#his report will analyze lang!ages and lang!age &ariants +eg ,S &s -atin American Spanish. across 60
emoji categories" #he $rst section identi$es /lang!age leaders for each category* then compares emoji
!sage between nglish lang!age speakers* sentiment across emoji and lang!ages* and lists the most
o&erinde3ed emoji for the ,S"
#his is followed by a breakdown of the more interesting categories* incl!ding a look how the leaders of
each category compare to the a&erage* &is!al representations of the data* and additional data on other
categories not yet mentioned"
4ote as there are o&er 00 emoji* the fre7!ency of any indi&id!al emoji is often small" #he n!mbers
referenced below +e"g" 0"289. represent how often each emoji is !sed o!t of all emoji !sage"
Findings of note:
● Canadians score highest in emoji categories some may consider to be more American (money,
raunchy, violent, sports)● French use four times as many heart emoji than other languages, and it’s the only language
for which a ‘smiley’ is not #
● !lowers and plants emoji are used at more than 4X the average rate by Arabic spea"ers
● Russian spea"ers use three times as much romantic emoji than the average
● Australia’s emoji use characteries it as the land of vice $ indulgence, using double the
average amount of alcohol%themed emoji, &' more drug emoji than average and leading for
both jun" food and holiday emoji
● Americans lead for a random assortment of emoji $ categories, including s"ulls, birthday ca"e,
fire, tech, *+, meat and female%oriented emoji
